About this project
Hi, I'm James Raphael, the creator of Raphael Quality Goods Co. and I am here to share with you, my first hardware accessory design, the LINK™ Key Hook.
$5000 STRETCH GOAL - LEATHER TAB & SOLID BRASS JUMP RING
The LINK™ Key Hook is a solid brass everyday carry accessory that provides a high quality, simplified and style conscious alternative to carabiners and complicated multi-tool EDC accessories. The LINK™ is designed to do one thing and do that one thing very well, carry your keys!
THE LINK™ DESIGN
Noun. Anything serving to connect one part or object with another.
Verb. To become joined together physically.
Synonyms. Connection - Joining - Attachment
From the outset, it was imperative that the LINK™ design not only look great, but that it work! It needed the ability to be securely, yet easily hooked on to a trouser belt loop or to be clipped in to any pocket, to suit the way you prefer to carry your keys.
The LINK™ Key Hook's final form, is the result of a design process that has seen multiple prototypes subjected to everyday testing and feedback. With sample after sample of ever so slight detail revisions, this journey of CAD drawing, 3D modelling, 3D printing, laser cutting and material & finish testing has resulted in a truly resolved final design.
The LINK™ Key Hook Dimensions;
2.75" x 0.75" x 0.25 " or 70mm x 20mm x 6mm
THE LINK™ MATERIAL & FINISH
The material and finish selection for the LINK™ Key Hook is a decision based not only on the strength and lasting quality of solid brass, but the beautiful process of how the material develops a unique and authentic patina as it takes the knocks of everyday use and handling, becoming more individual over time.
In addition to the aesthetic appeal, solid brass offers the ideal strength and weight for the LINK™ design, far more suitable when compared to other tested materials such as bronze, aluminum and steel. The production process sees the cast brass finely brushed to a smooth finish, creating a beautiful raw brass color to begin with, that will become more golden with age.
THE LINK™ STORY
Since the day that I first sketched the original design over a year ago, I have refused to allow the LINK™ to become anything less than absolute best product it can be.
The cornerstone products of Raphael Quality Goods Co. are originally designed, functional and stylish leather accessories of the absolute highest quality. As the first hardware accessory to join the RQGC collection, the LINK™ had to emulate these characteristics.
When I embarked on creating this product, I could never have predicted how complex the journey from concept to completion would be. As each challenge has presented itself, I have not hesitated to personally fund further prototyping and the development process, because I truly believe the LINK™ is a great design that deserves to be brought to life and I hope you feel the same way.
The challenge is that there is now a significant leap from producing sample batches of a small number of test pieces to the tooling and set-up required for a full production run of the finished product.
THE FINAL CHAPTER, WHERE YOU COME IN
By backing this project, your support will go towards funding the very first production run of LINK™ Key Hooks. The $2,500 goal represents the final stage set-up cost to begin production with our partner foundry in the USA.
As a reward, you will be receiving one of the very first LINK™ Key Hooks ever made at the lowest prices they will ever be available.
Should the project funding exceed the initial goal, I will simply be able to offer the LINK™ to a greater number of people, in a shorter turnaround time than I ever would have been able to without the amazing platform that is Kickstarter.
APRIL 1 - Project funding period closes.
APRIL 2 - Backer surveys sent out to confirm all information related to receiving your LINK™ Key Hook.
APRIL 14 - If successful, funds will become available.
APRIL 15 - Final quantities for first production run finalized.
APRIL 23 - 'Production Progress' update.
MAY 7 - LINK™ Key Hooks begin shipping to backers.
MAY 23 - Scheduled project completion.
Risks and challenges
As an experienced, successful project creator, I am aware that every endeavor brings with it associated risks and challenges. The advantage that accompanies the experience of having created and fulfilled two successful Kickstarter projects, is that the timeline reflects my experience with the process and potential for delays and possible problems is greatly reduced.
While unforeseen challenges and hurdles may still arise, having the production timeline in place, with logistics and other pragmatic elements refined, I am confident that any possible setbacks will be rapidly overcome.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
