This July 2012 I am setting out to paddle the George River from Labrador City to Ungava Bay in the north. I will be following much of the route of Leonidas and Mina Hubbard and will be publishing a book of the resulting photographs.
In 1903, Leonidas Hubbard departed North West River with the goal of paddling and portaging across the Labrador peninsula to the Ungava Bay to the north. Hubbard was an outdoors writer from New York City and although passionate about canoeing he had little practical experience in the bush. Unfortunately their expedition was plagued by poor judgement and bad luck. After leaving North West River they took a wrong turn and spent much of the expedition trying to get back on course. With food supplies running out and cold weather approaching Hubbard decided to turn back. Unfortunately the decision came too late and Hubbard died of exhaustion just 30 miles from North West River.
Determined to complete the trip in her husbands memory, Mina Hubbard set out in 1905 to paddle the George River. Thankfully, her expedition was a success and she became the first adventurer and the first woman to complete the feat.
I've always dreamed of paddling to the arctic and have been fascinated by the Hubbards' story. I find it to be one of the great true adventure stories of our century and yet at the heart of it, it is also a love story. The idea of following the footsteps of someone you love to be closer to them I find beautiful and haunting. I hope to incorporate these ideas into my photographs.
With your generous support I hope to share this experience and the story of the Hubbard expedition with people unfamiliar with Labrador and its inspiring landscape. Thank you so much for checking out my project and please continue to follow our progress as we prepare for our adventure this summer.
