Tesla Coils for North Korea
The goal of this project is to go where no amateur hobbyist has dared tread before - and it's going to require a lot of tesla coils.
Imagine for a moment having at your fingertips the ability to send a small robotic messenger - a minion if you will - virtually anywhere in the world and back. Sure, you've seen those fun little drone toys at the mall and perhaps you have had a friend that likes to tinker around with model airplanes, but what you are about to see unfold here is genuinely an unprecedented work of good 'ol fashioned American ingenuity.
What we would like to do here isn't rocket science, but it's pretty close. Our goal is simple. To design and build a small drone capable of intercontinental flights able to navigate itself to it's destination and back safely. In other words, we want a drone to be able to fly from coastal California all the way to Pyongyang. This is a feat that would make even Kim Jong Un jealous.
With a kerosene powered engine and 3D-printed body, the FLUX will cost a considerable amount of money, which, unfortunately, a few college students won't be able to cough up on their own. So what does this have to do with Tesla Coils? Well, that's where you come in. In order to make this dream a reality, we are going to be selling miniature solid state tesla coil kits to raise the necessary funds. Every cent raised will be used to produce the FLUX drone. Backers will receive monthly updates on the progress of the project and the opportunity to vote which foreign country to send the drone to for its maiden voyage.

Each Tesla Coil Kit box will contain what you need to assemble your own 9v Solid State Miniature Tesla Coil. The contents of each box will include:
Necessary Components (Transistor(s), Resistor(s), Diode(s), LED(s), etcetera)

Small 3D Printed Toroid With Conductive Coating
As an added bonus, backers will be able to vote for a foreign country of their choosing that our team will attempt to fly our drone to. The entire drone flight mission will be recorded with on-board cameras and distributed afterwards.
The arcs produced by the miniature tesla coils will vary, but each assembled coil will have the ability to light up nearby fluorescent lights! Be careful!

Risks and challenges
No doubt, this project will be fraught with a variety of risks and challenges. A team of experienced Electronics Engineering students from UC Berkeley and CSU Northridge will be working on this project to ensure that a quality product is produced.
We do understand that the legality of sending a drone on an intercontinental flight may be dubious. We will work with authorities to try to make our flight happen.
All of the money from this project will be used to extend the distance our drone can fly, so the more backers we have, the farther it will be able to go! Obviously, getting a drone able to fly over 5,000 miles itself is difficult. The current record for a "model airplane" flight was set by the TAM5. The feasibility of sending a small drone across the ocean and back has now been realized. With enough backer support, this project is possible, though our drone will fly as far as our funds allow.
The tesla coils produced by our kits are very small (around 2") and will not produce big arcs, but rather might produce some corona effect and will definitely light up CFL lights.
