Mappd – managing and protecting personal data. It is an acronym that expresses our ethos and perfectly describes our core values. We are committed to protecting your privacy rights and to do so, we are currently developing a web application that will allow you to easily exercise your rights as a 'data subject' and provide you with a central location to manage your personal data. You can take back control of what is rightfully yours.
You may have heard the term; "data has become the new oil" and this term has been circulating around media outlets because huge companies, economic powerhouses and even small to medium enterprises, can treat your personal data as a commodity - a commodity to be shared or sold in order to incorporate manipulative marketing techniques.
A picture of your past, present and future can be painted entirely from your digital footprint and your personal information acts as a catalyst to drive sales further influencing you to consume more - this should be the decision of the individual.
The current Data Protection laws have provided people some sort of control over their personal information although they have not been adequate enough fulfill our fundamental rights. Organisations still have the opportunity to make it extremely difficult in obtaining and deleting our own personal data, however, all is not so doom and gloom.
The upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will grant people the opportunity to evade this kind of Orwellian nightmare and Mappd plans to be at the forefront of this movement.
The application currently under development by Mappd, will provide its users a convenient way to locate and identify where their personal data is, acquire knowledge of how it is being used and know if it is even necessary for a company to hold it.
With Mappd's sophisticated management platform, you can easily locate, obtain and reduce your personal data alongside many other features and empower you to make decisions that relate to your own data.
Who we are
The founders; Harrison Mussell, Jamie Rodriguez
Coming from an IT Security background, data privacy has always been a subject dear to our hearts - ensuring that people are treated fairly by organisations is key to ensuring that both businesses and people get the most out of their relationship.
Throughout this time in the industry, there have been huge changes in relation to cyber crime, data breaches and organisations carrying out poor practice as they begin to manage huge amounts of data.
Unfortunately as a consumer, we often have to sign our information away and put it into the hands of an organisation who in many cases, does not look after the information properly, increasing your risk of having your identity stolen, information published or used for malicious activities, including fraud.
Jamie and I spent some time thinking about how to make the best out of a bad situation, and with incoming laws that give more power back to the people, we believe it is the right time to further develop and launch Mappd.
About the tool
Mappd is a data management tool which has been created to give the power to manage data back to the individual, rather than being subject to the organisations rules and processes.
It is a legal requirement within the European Union and the UK that organisations must provide copies of your personal data should you request it and soon with new EU / UK data protection laws the abilities and control that the individual has, will be increased further.
Unfortunately, to date these processes have been very much lead by organisations which has resulted in clunky, paper based solutions that are not easy to use.
Mappd is a tool that automates the processes and provides you with a centralized location for all of your needs relating to personal data whether that be;
- managing marketing preferences
- Viewing the location of your data across a world map
- Consolidating your data footprint
- Raising subject access requests
- Deleting data that a company holds relating to you
There are many uses for the tool and many features that we will be adding during this funding cycle to ensure that there is one tool to manage them all.
Imagine a time where you don't have to change your address with all of your companies when you move house - we can acheive this.
Currently we have built the following features;
- Ability to confirm where your data is held
- Ability to request copies of specific information that is held
- Ability to remove data that is held
