About

Who are we?

  • A travelling affordable art platform for artists and makers from across the UK.
  • Appearing in empty shops and creative spaces.
  • Delivering exhibitions to engage local communities in different parts of the country.

The main aim of Wildfire is to create a new type of art gallery that gives artists a wider reach for their work, and actively engages communities by creating welcoming spaces where people can enjoy, discuss and experience art, instead of just buying it. We’ve added new content to this page, so head to the updates to see what you might have missed!

 Developing an Artistic Community

Wildfire was originally conceived to help artists and give them a platform, as many don’t get a chance. We have helped lots of artists exhibit and sell their work for the very first time. We also work with local artists wherever we go, exhibiting them and taking them on our journey across the UK. We want to spread the work of these artists further. We work with a growing group of over thirty artists, fostering a countrywide community of creative and collaborative minds. Created as a collaborative process, artists with us have the opportunity to express themselves and develop their practice. We encourage full involvement with the process of developing the project, including curating, giving talks and running workshops. From now until the end of the campaign, we will be featuring artists, including examples of their work and testimonials about the project.

 The Campaign

This campaign is about expanding the project to reach more people with an increased number of locations, as well as greater emphasis on outreach. Wildfire will focus on enjoyment, participation and fostering creative thinking and discussion, we oppose being a shrine to the power of the pound.

A view from our Brighton show, 2019.

Through delivering talks, performances and workshops, as well as wider engagement with community groups and projects, we can introduce more people to our concept, and tackle wider issues around art galleries and engagement. Reinventing systems of value and ideas around what an art gallery is won’t be easy, but with support from this campaign, alongside the efforts of our artists and collaborators, there is so much we can achieve. That is why I’m here.

 Where does the money go?

This year I have proved that the project is viable, successfully introducing three communities to our ethos and practices in Folkestone, Norwich and Brighton. We have set solid foundations in logistics and practice. Next year is about achieving more and really establishing Wildfire as a social engagement platform that benefits artists and the communities we visit. We are raising £6,000, a figure based on the minimum amount we would need to make this a viable option for the project to achieve its objectives next year. This will;

  • Fund four Social Engagement Exhibitions in 2020.
  • Fund space rental, design and content costs (featuring the fantastic Dursley Design Company and Whiz Kid Social Media).
  • Fund general running costs and petrol for Van Gogh (the van’s nickname).
  • Fund the planned rewards and all extra costs involved in the campaign.

That is where your money will be going. Helping us deliver on those aims and objectives, more comprehensively than we have so far achieved.

What does being involved with Wildfire mean for an artist?

  • Your work is seen in different places around the country.
  • You get the chance to curate, host talks and workshops and collaborate with other artists from across the UK.
  • At every exhibition, we ‘feature’ one or two artists who respond to a brief about the town/city we visit to create new work and offer fresh perspectives on local landmarks and community issues.
  • Be part of a project that is trying to change the face of the art gallery.

One of the best things about doing more social engagement exhibitions, is that we get to work with even more artists, and be part of more creative processes. One of our artists, David William Petrie, expressed how the project has helped his practice.

“I hadn’t painted in 8 years. I knew John well, and when I heard about the project, I had to be a part of it. I was excited about creating again, I was experimenting, challenging myself again. I have now exhibited around the UK and I sold work for the first time in my life. I feel like an artist again. That is what working with Wildfire has done for me”

We’ll be sharing more stories from other artists until the end of the campaign – keep your eyes peeled!

Brighton show, 2019.

This has been my dream for three years, and last December I left my job to make it a reality. I have so much passion, so much ambitIon for the project. This year has been about developing the structure of the gallery, my skills, building confidence, exposure and awareness in who we are and what we do. With your help, there is so much more we can do in 2020.

Risks and challenges

Wildfire Gallery is an embryonic project, I’m very honest in admitting that this entire venture is a learning curve for me. My livelihood is entirely tied-up in this project. That said, I feel that I have proved this year that the idea can be successful, and learned many lessons that give the project a great foundation as we embark upon Phase II next year.

Obviously when it comes to the rewards, I have of course done costings and am confident we can deliver the rewards up to the £500 reward. However the top reward, delivering a Wildfire Gallery, is a challenging process in itself - it requires advanced planning, luck and negotiation. In some cases we haven’t been able to secure anywhere in certain places. This is due to a number of factors - cost is the main factor, but it can also be down to landlords, councils and even whether there is actually a suitable space for us to appear. In the event that we cannot bring a Wildfire to you, we will work closely with you to find an alternative solution, such as finding a space as close as possible to you.
