About this project
Story Surgeon is Fan Fiction on Steroids
What started as a way for me to clean up books to share with my mom and little brothers, quickly became a creative outlet and promotional tool for writers.
Out Of The Gutter Software Development is dedicated to making quality programs and apps that make life easier for parents. As President, I've hired a great team of programmers to help with this inaugural project. It will start out for iPad, but if we get more than $15,000 we can branch out to other platforms.
Although it will be a complicated app to develop, the idea is simple. Buy an eBook in ePub format and download it to your iPad. Download the Story Surgeon app. (It will be free on release day and probably many days thereafter.) Then you can use the app to read the original eBook (booooring) or make your own personal changes to the text. (OH YEAH!)
Use the "find and replace" tool to substitute bad words, cut out whole portions of the book you thought were lame, or completely rewrite the novel with you as the main character.
Once your filter is perfect, you have the option to upload it into Drop Box and post your link on the Story Surgeon General Blog. (As we grow we'll get our own servers and streamline the sharing process.)
The filter is kept separate from the eBook and no copyrights will be infringed upon. Anyone who uses your link and downloads the free filter will have to have purchased the original eBook. Filters will always be free.
(There are a few authors who don't allow Fan Fiction. Such filters along with those containing explicit material will be flagged and removed from the website.)
Whether you want a G-rated version of Hunger Games for your tween, or a romance version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, star ratings, descriptions, and lists will make finding filters easy.
Naturally, the filter selection will be a little paltry as we start out. That's why we need everyone's help to spread the word. The more people we have making filters, the more awesome this app will be. I'll be making some pretty neat filters myself for generous donators. (See prize list.)
For authors, making fun filters of your already published book is a great way to generate buzz and get more people purchasing the eBook.
For me, the most important aspect of this app will be that I don't have to keep my kids from reading certain books. They can read whatever they want (after I've verified the filter), and I don't have to worry about it warping their young minds.
For many, the unique fan fiction aspect will be most exciting. In traditional fan fiction, you use an author's characters and setting to make your own stories and scenes. But the technology of Story Surgeon allows you to make changes to the original story and share your version with the world. Add in a new love interest, make an annoying character die a grisly death. Let your imagination go wild. If your filters get good ratings and become popular you might start getting requests. Who knows, maybe the original authors will take notice and ask you to co-author their next book!
Below you'll find some mock ups so you can get an idea of how it will look.
THESE ARE DOCTORED IMAGES! THE APP HASN'T BEEN DEVELOPED YET!
As you see here, I'd eventually I'd like to get the filter links directly into the app. Adding photos will also be something I'll implement in the later versions of the app.
This photo shows a few possible tools and how they'll be implemented in a user-friendly interface.
REMINDER: ALL IMAGES ABOVE ARE FABRICATED, JUST TO HELP YOU VISUALIZE THE APP'S AWESOME FACTOR.
The video was made by Ryan using his Ipod and a free video editing app called SPLICE. The photos were all taken by him, and the music was provided free with the editing software. The Splice creators encourage the video creators to upload and share their videos. No copyright or permission needed.
Risks and challenges
The nice thing about working with a really expensive custom app building company is that they do things right. (And if they don't, they fix it without charging you again.) Making the iPad app do everything I want is going to take $16,500. (If I make $15,000 on this campaign, I'll foot the rest of the bill.) I'd love to make it available for android tablets as well, and even phones, but that will require more dinero. (If we don't get it now, we can always add the platforms later.)
If there are any bugs, ZCO will fix them for free. Hip, Hip, Hurray!
