The Danegeld (Danish tax/Dane tribute) was a tax raised to pay tribute to the Viking raiders to save a land from being ravaged. It was called the geld or gafol in eleventh-century sources. It was characteristic of royal policy in both England and Francia during the ninth through eleventh centuries, collected both as tributary, to buy off the attackers, and as stipendiary, to pay the defensive forces. Almost always paid in silver because the vikings used this metal as their main currency for trade.
Yggdrasil is the iconic ash tree of Norse mythology. Serving as the axis mundi (world center) and a direct connection between deities and men. The roots play an equally important role in Norse cosmology of Gods, Giants and Men. Huginn and Muninn fly high in the distance, overlooking the realm of Gods.
100% custom pips, fonts, values, courts and aces. The card backs are designed in the traditional 2-way layout, and inspired by the classic Bicycle composition.
The court cards feature legendary viking leaders of Scandinavia (800-1000 AD) and deities of Norse mythology, with Odin as the King of Spades. Illustrations are drawn in hand by professional illustrator Patrick Leis and lead artist Nicolai Aarøe. Courts are identical in the two decks.
The two jokers of Midgard Playing Cards are represented by Odin's two ravens Huginn and Muninn and a runic index. Black ravens are common birds in Scandinavia and iconic for Norse culture and mythology.
Two additional cards are now added to the project due to the unlocking of stretch goals!
These two cards, Loki and Futhark/Fuþark, are implemented as bonus cards in every Danegeld and Yggdrasil deck. Everyone will get them automatically.
The backs of Danegeld and Yggdrasil appear almost identical, while a closer look will reveal that symbolism and artwork is delicately diverse.
They do, however, both feature Odin's two wolves Geri and Freki on the sides in a mirrored composition.
Based on backer feedback and popular demand we have established a list of add-ons that accompany Midgard Playing Cards well. These are all Kickstarter exclusive and available in a limited supply.
Chivalry Playing Cards were successfully funded on Kickstarter in 2015. We only have a few reserves left and you have the chance to grab one or more of them here today. These decks are loaded with deluxe features such as metal foil, high rarity factor, embossed tucks, metallic ink, 56 cards, interior tuck artwork, numbered seals and more... Less than 50 of each edition left!
If you are pledging for the '1 Bundle' tier (that features a set of Chivalry decks) you don't need to write us a PM about this particular add-on.
With the signature add-on, our lead artist, Nicolai Aaroe, will be signing the decks with a white sharpie on the tuck itself (after removing the factory cellophane). If you don't want all your decks signed, you must let us know this in a PM.
Soft to the touch, the branded satin pouches are ideal for the storing of your Midgard decks or to be used as exclusive gift packaging. The pouches are manufactured in black satin and have silver foil hot stamped directly on them. The pouches are manufactured specifically to hold one deck of poker sized playing cards. Please send us a private message to confirm which edition you want (or both).
The 'Midgard - Legends of The Viking Age' is a companion and factoid booklet with background insight on each of the 12 legends and deities of Midgard Playing Cards. One spread per court card with the hand illustrations in a larger, uncropped format.
Midgard dealer coins are silver plated metal coins with a large diameter of 2 inches (50mm). The two sides have different artwork and the letters say 'Honor the Gods, Love Your Woman and Defend Your Kin'. Here's a close-up of the two sides:
How to apply add-ons
To apply an add-on, you must increase your pledge with the indicated value via the "manage my pledge" button while keeping the same reward level. You must then send us a private message for confirmation and specification of your chosen addon(s). Here's a video on how to manage your pledge. If you have any doubts or questions in relation to how addons work you are more than welcome to send us a private message. We will not be using BackerKit or any other post-funding pledge manager.
All stretch goals are financially approved and technically acknowledge by our chosen manufacturer. They will all apply for both editions and none of the them will be causing any delays to the fulfilment and development timeline.
Pledging for 6 or 12 Midgard decks will get you a branded box to hold them. These come in two sizes (fitting 6 or 12 decks) and feature a simulated intricate wood carved Norse artwork on all sides. The interiors include rune inscriptions to safe guard your decks from demons and giants. The brick boxes will be manufactured in a sturdy and matte quality similar to the robust Chivalry brick boxes.
Norse mythology is the body of mythology of the North Germanic people stemming from Norse paganism and continuing after the Christianization of Scandinavia and into the Scandinavian folklore of the modern period. The northernmost extension of Germanic mythology, Norse mythology consists of tales of various deities, beings and heroes derived from numerous sources from both before and after the pagan period, including medieval manuscripts, archaeological representations and folk tradition. This is what we aim to commemorate and portray with Midgard Playing Cards - brought to life only with YOUR support!
Design Imperator is small group of independent scandinavian developers, aiming to bring unique and rare products to the world with your support. Our first two playing card projects, Noble and Chivalry, were both successfully funded on Kickstarter and delivered to backers with great reviews. Now we are going to crank it up a notch and deliver some of the most exclusive Norse playing cards for the industry. But it is only going to become a reality with your trust and support.
With Marianne Larsen as head manager and creative supervisor, we've gathered a team of experienced creatives to accomplish our high ambitions with Midgard Playing Cards. Nicolai Aarøe (lead artist), Patrick Leis (main illustrator) and F. Gustafson (music) have been a pleasure to work with on this project - and this is only the beginning of our journey!
Risks and challenges
Our first two decks, Noble and Chivalry, were both successfully funded and received with great reviews.
For Midgard Playing Cards we have set a very conservative development timeline to ensure a thorough and flawless fulfilment for all backers.
NPCC have proven their quality and attention to detail with our Chivalry Playing Cards. As experienced project creators, we've brought many complex products to our audience on time and with very positive feedback. However, obstacles can arise unexpectedly. Potential set-backs include production delays, shipping and sourcing issues. Our fulfilment plan has buffers implemented to pre-counter for mishaps as much as possible.
We are shipping all rewards according to professional recommendations by Deutsche Post and DHL and will handle the fulfilment process ourselves to make sure that everything goes as planned. We have much experience with the shipping company and have used them for several years to send hundreds of parcels, big and small. We have every reason to believe that all rewards will be delivered to you as intended.
Please note that Design Imperator can not be held responsible for any damaged, lost, unclaimed or destroyed parcels. It is crucial that you enter your address correctly in the survey after the project has ended.
Since experience tells us that some decks, regardless to which country they are sent, can have an unexpectedly long delivery status, we need to ask for understanding for, that it may - in some cases - take months, from the time of dispatch, to the actual delivery by receiver.
Furthermore, please note that factory sealing, wrapping and packaging in relation to manufacturing and production of rewards is out of our hands.
If the reward itself does not live up to our quality control and pass our condition inspections we will return it to the facility and demand a re-production. IF this should happen, some delay in our fulfilment process can occur and we hope for your understanding in such event.
Design and artwork is subject to minor tweaks and updates.
Brick boxes will be printed by another company (not NPCC).
