At ROAV, we pair vintage style with state of the art technology. Our patent pending system of micro screwless hinges enable the first truly pocketable folding shades.
ROAV sunglasses clock in at mere 8.5 mm when folded. Folding Wayfarers are nearly four times as thick, and nowhere near thin enough to pocket. The difference is in our design approach. Our competitors simply modify existing frames to create foldability. ROAV isn't burdened by heritage and doesn't use any stock components. We design our eyewear from the ground up to be both beautiful and truly pocketable.
Built for the modern explorer, ROAV sunglasses are designed to always be with you, empowering you to stay nimble, plan less, and be ready for anything.

ROAV sunglasses are constructed from scratch-resistant ion-plated stainless steel. Our patent pending system of micro screwless spring hinges require zero maintenance and won't loosen over time.
The flat folding design eliminates pressure on the hinges when the glasses are folded, so they are able to withstand an enormous amount of compressive force. This means you can feel more than comfortable putting them in your back pocket or purse.
We selected premium nylon lenses for their lightness and flexibility. The addition of a polarizing filter ensures maximum reduction of glare. All our lenses provide UV and IR protection and are coated to resist reflections, fingerprints, and scratches.
Protective yet minimal, our handmade pouch is constructed from 100% vegetable tanned leather.
Unlike a standard eyewear screw hinge that is glued, soldered, or riveted to the frame, our unique screwless hinges are actually press formed into the sheet metal frame itself. This ultra minimal construction enables a design that is incredibly small and durable. The hinges also have an inherent springiness, so they won't come loose over time and prevent the glasses from folding or unfolding unintentionally.
ROAV folding frames, FF for short, inject modern practicality into iconic eyewear frame styles. All 3 shapes are unisex and were crafted to provide a comfortable and great looking fit on a wide range of face shapes and sizes.
Click on the image below for a style comparison if you wish to print and cut-out the frame styles. The image is sized to printer on a letter size (8.5 inch x 11 inch) sheet. Please note these line drawings accurately represent size, but due to the lack of nose pads, they do not accurately represent fit.
We are offering 3 frame shapes, with two colorway options for each shape. You can find these in the Styles and Colorways section above. For each frame that you order, you will also receive a leather pouch and microfiber cloth.
For the single pair rewards, we separated the rewards by frame shape. You will be able to choose which color option you prefer on a survey that we will email you at the end of the 35 day campaign.
For the multiple pair rewards, you will be able to select your desired color option AND frame shape on the survey after the campaign.
If you change your mind about your preferred frame shape at any point during the campaign, don’t worry, you can change your shape choice on the post-campaign survey.
At ROAV, we designed our first 3 frame styles to fit the widest range of face shapes. As many of you know, fit can be an issue for those with a lower nose bridge. A more universal fit is generally achieving with a deep nose pad. Our production version will have deeper nose pads similar to the dark gray pads in the image below. We did not have this pad ready for our main video shoot, which is why you don't see them in the imagery above, but they are ready now and they fit great!
We understand that eyewear fit is personal, so if you don't love your glasses for whatever reason, send them back for a full refund or exchange for a different style at no additional cost.

If you've made it this far down the page, then it's time you know the truth. Edwin ROAV didn't die in that plane crash... Also, his actual name is Frank and he's a part-time actor that I hired. The true story may be a little less glamorous, but if you're interested, check out the video below!
Risks and challenges
As I've learned throughout this process, delays and unforeseen obstacles are an inevitable part of product development. Fortunately, most of the process is already complete. I have received production ready prototypes that were made by the actual manufacturers that will be producing the final goods, so the processes and tooling used for production have been completely worked out.
This is the first product I've brought to market, so I made sure to align myself with people that have done this before; hundreds of times before, in fact. I have been working closely with expert production consultants that have brought millions of pairs of eyewear successfully to market. They know how to navigate the complexities of international manufacturing and get things done! I have made sure to only partner with manufacturers that produce quality products and have the ability to scale in the event that orders exceed expectations.
Kickstarter is hopefully just the beginning for ROAV, so building trust and loyalty with our customer base is my number one priority. I'm sure there will be challenges along the way, but I'm ready and willing to work through them. I'll keep you posted with production updates along the way, and rest assured that I'm as excited as you are to get a pair of amazing sunglasses in your hands.
