About

You've reached the Love and Luck Podcast
You've reached the Love and Luck Podcast

Launched in September 2017, Love and Luck is a fictional radio play podcast, told via voicemails. It’s a slice of life queer romance story with a touch of magic. The story is about two men, Kane and Jason, who fall in love, learn they have magic powers, and use those powers to support and protect their community. The good guys win, no one dies, and queer people of all types are all loved and valued.

Set in Melbourne, Australia in the present day, the world of Love and Luck is populated with many real life queer Melbourne people, events and places alongside its fictional characters. Made for people who like healthy relationships and happy endings, Love and Luck’s goal is to bring a few minutes of warmth and happiness to listeners once a week. If that sounds like a podcast you'd like to listen to, you can listen to the first 20 or so episodes right now, via our Website, your favourite podcatcher, or with captions via Youtube!

And now, we want to keep that warmth and happiness flowing. This year, we want to work on bringing you Season 2 of Love and Luck, with 50 new episodes of weekly content, so the fluffy, happy times don’t have to stop. We’re introducing more characters, more diversity, more love, and more stories. We want to take what makes Love and Luck such a great podcast, and give you a whole lot more of it! But we can’t do it alone - we need your help!

What People are Saying About Love and Luck
What People are Saying About Love and Luck

"Love and Luck is fun and sweethearted. Thoroughly good listening! The world needs more cute queer romances!" —Jacki "Jax" Brown, Mebourne Activist

"It's such a thrill to be a part of a piece of art as innovative, soul nourishing and original as this." —DL Turnbull, Love and Luck voice actor.

"I am very excited to be part of a show that'll let a queer enby/woman of color just be herself without needing to be defined by her identity all the time or be a teaching moment for the other characters." —Creatrix Tiara, Love and Luck voice actor

"Love and Luck is a fun, sweet, engaging listen that manages to be kind without being toothachingly sweet. If you, like me, have been searching for media that as made a firm stance on being a kind queer story made for and by kind queer people, you can do no better than Love and Luck." —Wil Williams, Podcast Problems

"In a market full of serious, grimdark shows, Love and Luck is a sweet, satisfying palate cleanser. It’s easy to get emotionally invested in Jason and Kane’s love story- their romance unfolds in a natural, enjoyable way, and the characters COMMUNICATE about their FEELINGS, which is a genuine pleasure. Highly recommended." —@JK_Rockin

Erin Kyan is a fat, queer, disabled, trans man, and is the driving force behind Love and Luck. He lives with his partner and co-producer Lee in St Kilda, with their two cats, Tribble and Boop (pictured). Erin also voices Jason in Love and Luck.

A writer and speaker who turns his attention to many different media, Erin performs original spoken word pieces a few times a year, occasionally writes small interactive fiction games, and publishes a small, personal and poetic monthly mini zine called Floodlight Viscera.

Lee Davis-Thalbourne is a bisexual cis man, who lives with his partner and co-producer Erin in St Kilda, with their two cats, Tribble (pictured) and Boop. Lee also voices Kane in Love and Luck.

Love and Luck is Lee’s first big creative project, and he’s just really happy to be there in your ears!

A lonely noteherd, our recording engineer Kermie Breydon roams a range of media and substantial swathes of continent. Their artistic and critical practice explores interrelations between physicality, culture and identity, while they delight in performing a variety of facilitatory roles for assorted cultural and community health initiatives, on Kulin lands and beyond. They are "chuffed" to help capture the Love and Luck podcast, their first.

A bubbling extrovert and obvious Scorpio, our credits voice Roslyn Quin is a passionate (and rather notorious) member of Storytelling Australia (Victoria) and the Australian Fairytale Society.

Described as ‘Melbourne’s imaginary friend’, her varied mediums of performance and art focus on creating illusions and fantasies to better explore what it is to be human.

Our Story So Far
Our Story So Far

In November 2016, Erin went through a particularly difficult time, and to distract himself, he decided to write a podcast for NaNoWriMo. After writing and editing the script, Erin decided that he wanted to make this podcast a reality. Lee had always wanted to do voice work, and Erin wanted to learn how to produce podcasts, so we figured, let’s do it! From writing, to casting, to rehearsing, to recording, to editing, we spent a lot of love and energy getting Season 1 of Love and Luck into your ears.

And it’s done! Season 1 is 100% completed and queued, and will be released weekly all the way into July 2018! We’re very proud of Love and Luck, and we’ve been so happy to see the impact that it’s had on everyone! As we keep seeing new people join our audience, we’ve been so happy to hear people’s feedback on how this nice, happy podcast has made so many people’s lives that little bit better each week.

That’s the story so far, but the story isn’t over yet. There’s plenty of stories left for Kane, Jason and everyone in their community, and Season 2 is now written and ready! We’ll be introducing new characters, bringing a few character back from this season that you’ll see later on, and of course, Kane and Jason will be back again, and we’ll be learning more about them and their family (both blood family and chosen family). We want nothing more than to keep bringing you more Love and Luck, and this is where you, our wonderful audience, comes in.

Why We're Kickstarting
Why We're Kickstarting

Making Season 1 of Love and Luck was a labour of love, and was 100% self-funded - we received no external grants or funding. As a result, we made Love and Luck on a shoestring budget, and we’ve had to rely on the kindness and generosity of actors, crew and supporters to make our podcast come to life. And that was fine for a single season - we of all people understand people wanting to support their community to get art made! But now that we’ve launched, We want to give back to the community of artists who helped us make our podcast a reality, by actually paying them.

We absolutely do not want to make Love and Luck a commercial venture - we have no desire to take on advertising to support the podcast. So, we’re asking you, the backers of the world, to help us build enough funds to not only make the next season a reality, but allow us to make sure the people who make this don’t have to sacrifice time unfairly.

You might also be asking why we’re asking for money now, before Season 1 has finished airing. The simple answer for this is that Season 1 took the better part of a year from start of production to end of production. If we waiting until July to get Season 2’s production underway, you’d be waiting 9-10 months for the next episode! We much prefer that you get your episodes with a much smaller break in between, so we want to get started on Season 2 now, so that we can launch the new season the same time of year we launched Season 1, in September this year.

Where the Money is Going
Where the Money is Going

We have every intention of being open and honest with our Kickstarter, and part of that honesty is helping you, the backer, understand why we’re aiming for the money we’re aiming for. Which is why we’ve provided a full breakdown (both in costs and percentages) of our production budget for this season:

Chart 1: Pie Chart of Budget
Chart 1: Pie Chart of Budget

Chart 2: Bar Chart Breakdown of Actual Budget Costs
Chart 2: Bar Chart Breakdown of Actual Budget Costs

Chart 3: Bar Chart Breakdown of Talent Costs

Stretch Goals

Any funds raised beyond the campaign amount will be used as our hope-chest for any unforeseen costs, advertising and community-building opportunities, or compensation for our collaborators. If we reach the launch of Season 2 and find we have money left over, that money will stay in the hope-chest for season 3.

We don’t want to aim for stretch goals that include more content or more swag, because we are 100% focused on keeping our promises to you, the backer, by delivering Season 2 (and your rewards!) for you within schedule.

Risks and challenges

As we’ve mentioned above, we’ve managed to produce an entire season of Love and Luck - a full 48 episodes! We did this with absolutely no outside funding, and the generous support of a number of volunteers, which is why we’re confident that, with a little extra funding, we can successfully produce a second season of Love and Luck.

With that said, Lee’s day job is as a risk analyst, and Erin plans EVERYTHING, so naturally, we’ve thought long and hard about the potential obstacles in our way in producing this podcast, and fulfilling our Kickstarter rewards. No matter what might go wrong however, we have every intention of making sure backers are kept informed - We're strong believers in open, effective communication between partners!

Here are some specific risks we've identified and planned for:

Producer Health
There is a risk that either one of the producers may have some health issues that prevent us from completing this season of the podcast. This is not an easily mitigated risk, however, Erin has had significant experience in completing projects through bad health, thanks to his disability, as well as planning around health concerns. We’re confident that even should either producer’s health deteriorate, we have the experience needed to finish production.

Loss of Facilities
Our Podcast uses a small recording studio at the Kathleen Syme Community Centre, in Carlton, Melbourne. We’ve used this facility before, and we’re confident that the studio is sufficiently stable and funded to allow us to complete this podcast. In the event of a failure at that facility, the City of Melbourne runs a similar facility at another one of their community centres in Docklands, which we’re also able to use.

Loss of an Actor
There’s definitely a risk that, for whatever reason, one of the actors on the podcast may not be able to complete their work with us. Since we go through a casting process with our actors, we will work with the actors to reduce this risk, and plan for availability and reliability.

Issues with Physical Rewards
There’s a risk that something could go wrong regarding the manufacture of the Love and Luck merchandise that form part of our backer reward structure, or that the manufacture could cost much more than we’ve planned for. This is our first time running a Kickstarter with physical rewards, so we’ve made sure to scope out multiple avenues for production, and have budgeted our physical rewards using our worst-case assumptions.

Issues with Livestreams
Part of our rewards structure includes Livestreams for our backers, and there's a possibility that things can go wrong during these livestreams, making it difficult/impossible for our backers to watch. We're firm believers in testing and retesting, and even if something goes wrong on the day, we plan to reschedule if we can, and ensure that any livestream becomes available for people to watch after it's finished.

Unfinished Scripts
This one is already mitigated - The script for Season 2 is already written. There’s no risk of creative failure in this regard.

Time Management
The risk here is simply that we do not factor sufficient time to complete this year’s production cycle before our Season 2 Launch date. We feel this actually not a likely issue - We have already completed a production cycle, and we were able to launch as planned. Our production scheduling is built on our prior experiences, and we have made sure our schedule allows enough wiggle room to allow us to recover from most unexpected problems.

That’s right, you get to name a character that appears in season 2!

There are only three available, but that’s because you’ll be naming a fully voiced character with real purpose in the story, and who will most likely be around in the show in years to come.

Editorial oversight is involved, however, so don’t think you’ll get away with Lucky McLoveface.
