As a teenager growing up through the 1970s I was lucky to witness in real time the explosion of new and exciting sci fi artists working in the UK.
The 1950s had brought us pointy rocketships and shiny saucers. The 1960s brought us the real thing when we shot for the Moon atop a Saturn V rocket. But in the 1970s things went a little wild...

I remember trawling second hand bookshops for the cover art, seldom even reading the novels. Then one day at school I happened across a book in the library; 'Spacecraft 2000 - 2100AD', by Stewart Cowley. Within it's pages was a cornucopia of wild and wonderful spacecraft paintings from all the great illustrators of the day. Colin Hay, Peter Elson, Tony Roberts, Angus McKie, Chris Moore and many more.

Now decades later I want to celebrate the Golden Age again with a colouring book based on a selection of these amazing creations. To that end, I've created my own 70s Spacecraft Colouring Book.

I approached three of my favourite artists from the time; Colin Hay, Tony Roberts, and the late Peter Elson's sister, Pam. I described my project and happily all three agreed to let me use their works to create hand traced outline drawings to make a colouring book for adults of all ages.

The Book is 300mm (12") inches square, spiral bound so you can fold pages back when colouring, and includes six full colour pages of reproductions of the originals to copy from. I have limited the Book to 300 copies worldwide, individually numbered, and only available through this Kickstarter campaign. The first 50 buyers of the Book will get their name printed on the inside back cover.

I then designed a series of 12 Colour-in Postcards, featuring four images from each artist. At A5 size these are about twice as big as a standard postcard. Three are full colour picture cards, one from each artist. The other nine are line drawings to colour in, with full colour reproductions on the back.

Lastly I designed a set of three exclusive Premium Picture cards, A5 in size and printed on premium card stock. The Colin Hay and Tony Roberts cards are hand signed by the artists on the image.

I began by choosing 7 images from each artist, then painstakingly tracing detailed outline drawings from them to produce images suitable for colouring. The colouring pages are printed single-sided, so that you are not colouring onto the back of another drawing.

With permissions and license agreements made with the artists I designed the Book and postcards and arranged for the printing. The artists have given me high quality scans for reproduction in the Book, but in the case of one of Colin Hay's classics – Cyclops – there was no archive digital image available. I managed to track the original painting down to a guy in New Zealand, and we are having a new high quality scan made just for this book!

Funding

The money I wish to raise will cover the costs of printing and delivering the Book and paying usage fees to each of the artists. There will also be a small amount in the initial target to allow me to complete all the drawings, which can take up to a full day to trace accurately.

I hope to have the finished book ready for delivery the first week of December at the latest, in time for Christmas.

As the project progresses I will post updates of new drawings and will be able to give a clearer idea of final delivery dates.

Thank you for looking.

Grant Louden

Risks and challenges

There are some potential risks, but not major ones.
One is in getting hold of the scans from the original paintings in good time. As this picture is required for the cover of the Book and postcards it's essential to the project. I hope to have that first week of November, giving me plenty of time to complete the artwork for the book.
Any delays pushing further into December may make it tight to deliver for Christmas, but the plan is to have items going out first week of December.
