About this project
The Habitat Solution
Habitat is a smart home automation platform that takes everyday items in your home and connects them to the Internet and your mobile devices. At Habitat we believe that home automation should be simple, secure, and easy to install. You should not have to cut wires, climb ladders, or spend days on complex configuration. Habitat makes home automation affordable, useful and enjoyable for everyone.
Today we are offering products that enable this experience. We're bringing the Internet of Things to a home near you.
As Featured On...
Habitat Park is the world's only garage door remote docking station, and is the simplest way to automate your garage door functionality. By docking your remote in the tray, Habitat Park is able to operate your garage door and enable a range of automated features. Installation is super easy and there is no need to retrofit your home.
Habitat Park can be setup to use geo-fencing (location) information to open and close your garage door automatically. A simple attachment included with Habitat Park will ensure you always know if your garage door is opened or closed. This combined with our auto close feature ensures that you never leave the garage door open. We are very excited by the wide range of uses for Habitat Park:
- Auto-open when you come into your driveway, and auto-close when you leave, whether you’re driving or biking.
- Know when your kids arrive home from school or if we detect a disturbance in your garage door and it is forcibly opened. Great for knowing what’s going on with your home and keeping your house secure. We can not only tell you when the door is opened but what person opened it.
- Easily add your family members, neighbors, or friends to your account so they have the ability to open the garage door.
- Leaving on vacation and want to give someone temporary garage access to enter your home? No problem, use our temporary access code and limit the time duration and device registration.
- Never leave your garage door open all night again. We'll make sure it's always closed after a certain time.
- Always have your garage door remote in the security of your own home. Don't leave it in your car in a public location, where it can be stolen and then later used to break-in to your home.
- Locked out of the house? Don’t worry you can open your garage and enter through your attached garage door leveraging this app. You can even hide a key in your garage making for a much safer alternative to fake garden rocks.
Habitat Park supports the most common form factors for garage door remotes, and can be setup by anyone in seconds.
Inside Habitat Park there is a mechanical arm engineered to precisely operate the functions on your garage door remote, all controlled from your mobile device. The garage door remote stays in the safety of your home securely docked inside Habitat Park, no more losing your remote or buying new ones as your family grows up!
Habitat Protect integrates existing smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors into the Habitat home automation system. Through hardware specifically designed for smart tone analysis, it will inform you if you have a warning, an alarm, or whether you just need to change the battery. Habitat Protect delivers simple, peace of mind monitoring of events in your home, no matter where you are.
Habitat Protect magnetically installs on a wall within range of your detector, and is easily setup using the Habitat App on your smartphone. There are no additional wires or complicated installation.
There are a number of applications for Habitat Protect:
- Ensure your home is safe at all times, and be-forewarned so that you can prevent a fire tragedy.
- Not sure of the many different sounds that your alarm system makes? We’ll tell you if there is any health risk, or if you just need to change the battery.
- Have pets? Ensure they are safe at home whenever you are away.
- Habitat Protect also ships with a temperature sensor, so that you get a better idea of the temperature differences on the various floors of your home.
Habitat Learn is our contribution back to the home automation community.
We have created a product that will allow you to be creative and extend automation to a range of day-to-day items you already use in your home. Habitat Learn comes with temperature, audio, acceleration (motion), and light sensors. It can monitor and react to a variety of events in your home.
The range of applications for Habitat Learn is limited only by your own creativity. Here are a few we've heard:
Find out when the laundry machine or dryer are done.
- Get notified when your doorbell rings even if you're out of ear shot.
- Discover that you (or one of your kids) has left the fridge open again.
Get an alert whenever someone opens a drawer or cupboard that only you should be accessing.
- Detect ambient light in a room and use it to control existing light automation solutions you already have like Philips Hue.
- Find out that you've left the stove on immediately upon leaving your home.
Habitat Learn has the same form factor as Protect, and you can easily install it anywhere without retrofitting your home.
Habitat Hub is the brain behind the Habitat platform, and provides control over the other Habitat products. Hub connects all of the products to the Internet and your smartphone or tablet.
The Hub also magnetically attaches to Habitat Park, so that it’s just one small device that sits in your home. It's home automation without running extra wires or making modifications to your home. The Habitat Hub becomes the central nervous system for your smart home.
We also strongly believe in product aesthetics, so we've designed the Habitat products to look great wherever they are in your home.
Everything is easily controlled using the Habitat app on your smartphone or tablet.
Habitat Platform and Extensibility
The Habitat platform will learn your patterns over time, so that for example when you arrive home during the week your garage door will open, but on the weekends it knows you prefer to park outside.
Habitat is a company dedicated to the Internet of Things. Our goal is to make your existing products work better and smarter. At Habitat the products we create follow three principles.
The first is our belief that a home automation solution will effortlessly integrate into your home and with the existing purchases you’ve already made. You already have products that work, they just haven’t been enabled to leverage the power of the internet.
The second principle is that the products will be straightforward to install and intuitive in their every day use. You never have to touch wires or require an engineering degree.
Our third principle is about the future. Over time, more and more products in your home will become Internet enabled. You’ll want a platform that will easily extend to manage the Internet of Things. At Habitat we are building an open and extensible solution that provides immediate value today, while growing to meet your many needs in the future.
How it Started
This is all started with our founder's desire to control his garage door through his smart phone, so it would automatically open and close as he left and returned from work.
All of the solutions that existed in the market either required a ladder and wire cutters, or an entirely new garage door opener. There had to be a better way, and so he hit upon the idea to use his existing garage door remote. He spent some time on the weekend in his basement, and created this very first prototype:
This early prototype evolved into Habitat’s philosophies and the products we are offering today on Kickstarter!
Evolution of our Design
For over a year the Habitat team has been testing and improving the design, optimizing for the most cost effective solution, and talking to prospective customers about what they would like to see. The video below shows the design iterations and many enhancements we have made over this timeframe.
We also have designed and built prototypes in order to de-risk the key features of the Habitat products.
Note that we have patents pending on this and other design innovations in the Habitat product line.
We have also starting building out our app with continuing development through Kickstarter and beyond as we achieve Kickstarter success.
The Habitat Team
Our team is composed of talented and creative people with diverse backgrounds. They bring a wealth of knowledge in software and hardware engineering, user experience, marketing, and in building teams and companies. Our passion is what drives us, and our fundamental goal is to make the products you own simpler and smarter.
We have partnered with a leading high efficiency manufacturing partner called SigmaPoint, and we are proud to be manufacturing our product in North America. SigmaPoint specialize in the Toyota model of product production and obsesses as much as the Habitat team on process efficiency and product turnaround.
SigmaPoint is capable of ramping up production to scale to produce as many Habitat products as we could possibly generate demand for.
Having such a strong partnership with a leading manufacturer at this stage reduces the chance of us delivering product late to our backers, and it also positions us to keep our costs low while at the same time producing a high quality product.
Risks and challenges
We have gone through several early design iterations for what we believe are a truly unique set of products. During that time we have prototyped and de-risked the key design components.
Now we just need the resources to deliver!
The main risk lie in QA and production delays, however our partnership with SigmaPoint does help mitigate this risk. That said, there can still be unexpected sourcing or compliance delays.
As products advance from concept to delivery, there can also be other unanticipated challenges. To our backers we commit to an open communication, so that you are kept fully up to date on the status of the project as it progresses. We also very much welcome and appreciate your feedback during this process.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
