Binary is the story of a man who must decide between saving his artificially intelligent girlfriend or a human woman during a crucial space voyage, causing him to question what love really means.

Binary will be a 20-minute, live-action short film.

Ryker - Loyal and naive, Ryker grew up in the working class. When he falls in love with an artificially intelligent woman, Seline, he struggles with whether to prioritize his love or his fellow human.

Seline - An advanced form of artificial intelligence, appearing human, Seline has been programmed with the capacity to love. She must convince Ryker and Natalie her love is as valuable as human love.

Natalie - After being kidnapped in the slums, Natalie finds herself aboard a strange ship used for human trafficking. Confused and desperate, Natalie must manipulate Ryker and Seline into letting her go.

Dalsun - A corrupt security officer with his hands in smuggling and human trafficking. Cares little for anyone or anything but himself.

* The crew of Binary is committed to inclusive and diverse casting.

Binary takes place on a gritty, futuristic spaceship. To create this unique cyberpunk set, we require extensive construction, customized props, and substantial set dressing.

Take a look at several of our set mockups below to get an idea of what we plan to create:

The Production Team has diligently budgeted for Binary. While every effort toward frugality has been made, filmmaking is an expensive endeavor. The funds raised will be allocated per the chart below.*

 * Allocations may change pending the needs of the Production. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the Producers.

Our skilled crew comes to Chapman from all across the globe. Get to know us below:

Carol was born in Canada and has lived in Shanghai, New Zealand, and California. In 2013, she founded the first city-wide student film festival in Calgary. Her favourite genres include science fiction and dark comedies. When she's not working on films, Carol can be found paragliding, rock climbing, or skiing.

Alex, from Northern California, has a strong passion for character-driven stories, such as Binary, told through old and new media. During his time at Chapman, Alex has worked at Big Frame (Talent Management), and interned at Creative Artists Agency (CAA), the world’s preeminent talent agency. He hopes to pursue a career in talent representation.

Adam, from Maryland, comes to us with over 8 years of experience shooting short films and over 5 years working on professional-caliber productions including narrative, commercial, and documentary work with clients such as Under Armour, Chubbies Shorts, Loaded Longboards, and The Oyster Recovery Partnership. He will be shooting on the ARRI ALEXA for Binary.

Jack has grown up surrounded by the world of film and photography. He has now developed quality content for high profile clients such as US, UK & Russian Glamour, Vanity Fair, SELF Magazine, Clarks Shoes, and Redbook Magazine. His latest project took him on a 15-day travel shoot to Africa with photographer Ken Kochey.

Bhargavi comes to Chapman from Chennai, India, where she received her Bachelors in Architecture at Anna University. At Chapman, Bhargavi has utilized her architectural background to supplement her production design skills, and will play a key role in the construction of our spaceship set.

Ting, born in China, started to show great interest in media in young age. Interested in music, literature, and fine art, Ting has found success across commercials, documentary, animation, and live action narrative work. Some of her commercial work was recently nominated for The Taiwan Times' Young Creative Award.

Maggie, joining us from Napa, California, is a senior Creative Producing major, minoring in Ethics. As a philosophy enthusiast, the chance to explore the topic of Artificial Intelligence and romance in a film was something she says she "couldn't pass up." In addition to her role on Binary, Maggie is also heavily involved in collaborations with Chapman's Digital Arts / Animation program.

Nicholas Docter, from the SF Bay Area, is a junior directing emphasis at Chapman University with plentiful on-set experience as a 1st AD. While his passion is directing, he is also interested in sound design and history.

Luke Snedecor, from Northern California, will be handling visual effects supervision and creation for Binary. Luke spends most of his time creating effects of all sorts, but also enjoys playing musical instruments, playing frisbee, and building racing drones.

Risks and challenges

Filmmaking is inherently risky and challenging. That's part of what makes this project worthwhile.

Dodge College leads the pack in providing students with tangible skill-sets in preparation for Thesis and Graduation. Our crew, drawing from the undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as industry professionals, is well-versed in their areas of expertise, having worked extensively on student and professional film sets across the world, including in Africa and Asia. Any challenges that come up with be mitigated professionally, with the skills we have been honing throughout our careers at Chapman.

We are so eager to continue the creative process of "Binary" through production and post-production, and your support is integral to making this possible.
