A follow-up to the Platypod Pro, Max is a sturdy flat mini tripod ideal for low-angle shots and situations where traditional tripods are cumbersome or impractical.
Don’t be fooled by Max’s small stature—it will be the strongest tool in your gear bag! Made of aircraft grade aluminum and titanium, Max is perfect for heavy DSLRs, large lenses and full-size video cameras. Max can support up to 300 pounds—if your tripod ball head can support it, so can Max.
Platypods do not replace a conventional tripod, but they excel in a variety of situations:
The original Platypod Pro® was born out of frustration. After a humbling canyon hike in Utah’s Bryce Canyon National Park with a full-size tripod, Larry, Platypod’s inventor, searched high and low for a compact tripod both sturdy enough for a DSLR camera and small enough to fit in his bag with his favorite wide-angle lens. He came up empty handed.
The Pro - our firstborn
Larry already owned several tripods and ball heads but wanted a flat base, so he devised the Platypod Pro, a flat camera support the size of an smart phone, that would screw onto almost any small to medium tripod ball head without the need for tools.
Inspired by the duck-billed platypus, an animal with flat and broad feet, he gave it an unusual but highly ergonomic and elegant shape, perfectly balanced for DSLRs and lenses.
The flat and thin base—only 4mm thick—takes up almost no space in a bag. Its compact design is awesome for low angles and hard-to-access nooks and crannies, such as ledges, oven racks and car trunks. Spike-screws are available for better grip and balance on hard and uneven surfaces. The Pro does its job and does it incredibly well.
Reviews and Awards for the Pro
Since the original Platypod Pro® Deluxe Kit was released over a year ago, leading photographers and equipment reviewers including Scott Kelby of KelbyOne, Kevin Ames of Photofocus, Frederick van Johnson of TWiP, and RC Concepcion have been using the Pro and loving it. The Platypod Pro has also been featured in Photo District News as an “Object of Desire,” and was nominated for Best Tripod at the Lucie Technical Awards in 2015.
Enter the Platypod Pro® MAX
As a photographer himself for over 40 years, Larry knew that no single tool is for everyone. When demonstrating the Pro at trade shows, several people said that they needed a larger plate to accommodate very hefty tripod heads, such as those made by Kirk and Really Right Stuff. Larry heard it loud and clear and conceptualized Max.
Max doesn’t replace the Pro–if anything, it complements it. The Pro is designed for ultra-portable support for smaller and mid-size cameras. Max has all of the benefits of its predecessor, but it packs a bigger punch! At approximately 5 x 8 inches (exact measurements below) it is around the size of an iPad Mini. The larger footprint means more stability. Like the Pro, Max is made of aircraft-grade aluminum with an embedded 3/8-inch titanium bolt. It has some new features, including a pair of slots that can secure Max via a bungee cord or zip-ties to freestanding objects and structures. In the center are 1/4- and 3/8-inch holes to attach Max to quick-release devices, such as the Peak Design Capture Clip, or directly onto a tripod center column. For additional versatility, we even provide a 1/4-1/4-inch male cross-nut (not shown) to attach accessories such as Pocket Wizard transceivers.
Max comes with four spike-screws. Use the spiky sides for grip on rocks or the rubber ends to prevent scratching on furniture or cars. Several photographers told Larry that they wanted a way to store the spike-screws on Max, so he came up with a detachable box made of fiberglass-reinforced nylon.
What We're Made Of
1. Fiberglass-reinforced nylon removable "bayonet style" storage box mounted onto plate to hold four 1/4-20 spikes, 2 inches long, with heavy-duty rubber feet and locking nuts. Small magnets keep spikes in place for storage.
2. Five 1/4-20 threaded holes strategically placed to allow use of spike feet in configurations of one, two, three, or four at a time.
3. Two 2-inch belt slots to secure to any cylindrical object or to tape onto floors for remote camera setups.
4. Made of 6061 black anodized aircraft-grade aluminum. 5 mm thick. 5.25 x 7.75” (5-year warranty—Full replacement of parts for any defect in workmanship. Guaranteed to hold up to a 300-pound load!)
5. 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 accessory threaded holes for attachment to tripods or quick-release devices under the unit.
6. 3/8-16 TA2 titanium photographic bolt drilled and countersunk through the plate and welded in place for large tripod ball heads, such as the RRS-BH55, even with spike-feet in place.
7. Two nail holes for permanent or semi-permanent mounting to walls, boards or ceilings.
8. Weight: 13 ounces, including spikes and storage box.

Risks and challenges
In a marketplace chock-full of camera supports of all shapes and sizes, the Pro succeeded in becoming a recognized name and product. It has attracted industry awards, critical acclaim, and most importantly, positive feedback from serious enthusiasts and professional photographers. We have exceeded our goals and the Pro continues to sell very well.
Still, there were challenges. Our original launch over a year ago was complicated by design challenges, expensive patent applications, material meltdowns (did you know that stainless steel dissolves in anodizing solution?), longshoremen strikes, and Homeland Security trying to figure out exactly what a Platypod was before clearing it. We learned from these issues, and we’ve ensured that they will not affect the delivery of Max.
We are confident in the durability of this product. 12 pre-production hand-machined samples were heavily field-tested by a select group of professional shooters in various fields of photography to get feedback on how the Max performs in the real world. We received some great advice, made a couple of tweaks, and produced dozens of samples to send for review. We believe the design is now perfect and ready for the market!
We are offering a selection of easily affordable rewards to our backers. Some of the offers include expedited delivery, which will necessitate costly air shipping from the production lines of Accurate Machinery, Ltd. in Ningbo to our warehouse in the USA.
The best projects to back on Kickstarter arise from companies with fine track records and products that have already proved themselves successful in the real world, just as we have done. With your support Max can be an even greater success.
