About

Happy Heist is a game about robbing banks with your friends

Players compete against each other as Robbers by coming up with creative ways to get past the bank security systems and steal the cash, using their extremely limited, ridiculous and whimsical options. Meanwhile, an overseer player; The Bank, controls the flow of the game and decides the fate of the other players.

It's like Top Trumps, D&D, Cards Against Humanity and a bank heist movie smashed together into a fun social card game experience, full of creativity and silly fun. Happy Heist will have you telling wacky stories and coming up with some of the most creative, ridiculous and hilarious plans you could normally only dream of.

Happy Heist is a game of improvisation and lot of the fun comes from the creativity of everyone playing, and the insane plots and solutions people come up with. The Bank player can also elevate the experience by setting the scene and putting their own twist on the Security Cards

To win, you will need to play your cards both strategically and creatively!

Creativity is key in winning Happy Heist, coming up with wacky and elaborate ways to use Action Cards will win you the game! Creativity is not only for the Robbers though! Whilst I recommend switching out whoever plays The Bank each game, in our group, my brother is usually the one to take the role. He's great at setting the scene and making us feel like we are in a heist movie. The short bursts of descriptive storytelling and unique twists that The Bank puts on the Security Cards can make the game even more fun for everyone!

Whether your delivery and ideas are hilarious, your plans are perfectly thought out masterpieces, or your evil grin and silence as you place down the most unstoppable card just blows your opponents out of the water, creativity is always key.

You will have to play your cards strategically! Trying to hold onto cards that seem more powerful is recommended. No matter how much you want to use your C4 to blow up that security droid, it might be worth trying to hack into it with your screwdriver, saving the C4 for when it's needed!

You may also have a card that doesn't seem so great on it's own, but you might just find the perfect situation for it, or possibly combined with another card in the last stage it could be a real contender! So you might want to save that for the vault, just don't get stuck with a Fidget Spinner at the final hurdle...

Replayability is the bane of card games! Many groups (mine included) stop picking up their favorite game because it just starts to feel too repetitive, seeing the same cards and having the same experiences.

In Happy Heist, a massive part of the game is the need to use cards creatively and improvise, so really, there are as many different ways to play each card as you can imagine.

Outside of my love for tabletop games, I also have a passion for video games, and specifically rogue-like and rogue-lite games, these can play out differently every time, or have randomly generated assets, maps or stories, always giving the player new experiences and surprising them. I was inspired by these kinds of games and wanted to mirror this feeling with Happy Heist.

Adding to this is the sheer number of unique cards in the game and the number of card combinations that allows. We're aiming for a minimum of 400 cards which will allow around 24,000 card combos! That's before considering the math on the final round where players can use multiple cards (I know you want numbers but I'm not a mathematician OK!?).

Something new will happen every time you play.

Happy Heist has three types of cards:

  • Action Cards - These cards could be items, skills, traits, super-powers, weapons, food, pet animals... anything a Robber could use to their advantage. Robbers are dealt a hand of these at the start of a game.
  • Security Cards - These cards are the individual security systems or defenses in the bank. They could be weaponized defenses, security guards, traps and much more. The Bank player will be dealt a hand of these and will place down one for each round.
  • Vault Cards - These cards are played by The Bank once per game for the final round. As the Robber's final obstacle, these cards represent extremely difficult or highly defended vault systems. Robbers will have to devise a plan to break into these unique vaults and get the cash to win.

Now let's take a detailed look at how a game plays out, turn-by-turn:

  • In each game of Happy Heist, one player is nominated to be The Bank. Everyone else plays as Robbers. The Bank controls which security systems and obstacles that everyone else will have to face. The Bank also decides who succeeds, and who fails.
  • The Bank picks up a hand of Security Cards and one Vault Card for the final round. Robbers are dealt an Action Card for every round.
  • At the start of each round, The Bank plays one Security Card of choice, and each Robber must come up with a creative plan, using one of their Action Cards to progress the game. You will need to explain your plan and justify how it is the best solution, if you want a chance at winning the round
  • Once all Robbers have explained their plans, it is now the Bank's turn, but feel free to butt in and pick holes in your opponent's plans and tell them how stupid they are.
  • Now, once everyone has calmed down, The Bank (and only the bank) decides who wins each round, whether it is because the answer was the most funny, creative, or if it just made complete sense. The winning player gets to pick up a new Action Card.
  • After several rounds, when The Bank is out of security cards, Robbers have reached the bank vault and a Vault Card is placed down. Robbers can now use ANY amount of their remaining Action Cards to craft their master plan, an elaborate story of how they break into the heavily guarded bank vault, get the cash, and escape!
  • The Bank decides who wins the final round and that player is the winner of the game!

For my whole life I have loved games of all kinds, they bring new experiences and ways to have fun that I can have on my own, or share with friends. I also love to create, whether it's drawing, making music, coding video games, writing stories, anything I can find to use my creative energy in my spare time.

So when I began creating Starquake Studios earlier this year, I had one goal in mind, to create new ways to have fun. I have my brother and a few friends helping out with the project, and whilst we don't have the funding to work on new projects night and day, we share the same goal. Happy Heist is our first project of this kind, and with your help, it will definitely not be our last!

Below are the first scribbled notes describing a game that would later be named Happy Heist! If you can read my AWFUL hand-writing, you'll see that the core idea has stayed almost completely the same since I wrote on this piece of paper!

The game started out life as these horribly inconsistent pieces of A4 paper, drawn onto with pen. After I realized that I might be onto something with the game, I whipped these up before meeting up with my friends that evening, so that we could give it a try!

It looked terrible, and I realized how annoying it is to play a card game with thin paper instead of card. But lo and behold, not only was it a functional game, it was a blast! We got sucked into it and forgot we were playing a flimsy paper prototype! Each week I would add new cards (pieces of paper) and we would play again!

Happy Heist works perfectly in smaller groups, but it is also designed to support a whopping big group of up to 10 players! We all agree that it sucks when you can't play your favorite game, or people are left out because it doesn't allow enough players. With our game, everyone can get involved. (Unless your group is more than 10 people, in which case give it a go anyway, it will probably work, but it's going to be utter chaos!)

Whether you're a group of four buddies, a bigger get-together, or family gathering, it's going to be a blast!

In a normal game of Happy Heist, everyone makes it to the final round, but some will have drastically less options and almost no chance of making it, and are essentially forced to try and justify something extremely nonsensical and ridiculous in a vain attempt to win.

Whilst this can be hilarious, for a faster paced and more brutal experience, play Eliminator mode! In this mode which will be detailed in the instructions as an alternative way to play, Robbers are dealt less Action Cards then there are rounds, or Security Cards, and can run out of cards before the finale! Out of cards? You are eliminated!

If you can, please help spread the word about the project! If you've already backed, or are going to, consider sharing it on social media! Every little bit of help counts, and if you know someone or have a friend who might be interested, and they end up pledging, that is huge for us.

With your help, we just might make it!

If you made it this far, then we thank you for taking the time out of your day to consider the project. If you've already pledged, I can't put into words how much that means to us, you have allowed me to turn a dream into reality and have made an impact on our lives, and in turn I hope the game has an impact on yours. Again, thank you.

Credit where credit is due! Another big thank you to these people!

This project would not be possible without PrintNinja, a veteran manufacturer of card games, board games, books, magazines, puzzles and more! They deliver excellent quality and we are confident that together, we can bring you a final version of Happy Heist that leaves nothing to be desired!

Risks and challenges

We honestly feel that the risks and challenges for this project are quite minimal!

We are confident with what the outcome of the game itself will be, the product is fun & simple and we've got a great manufacturer on board who can offer us excellent quality, and have a great reputation on previous Kickstarter projects.

The real challenge comes if you all back this project to the moon! If we achieve overwhelming support, attention and pledges; we'll receive truck-loads of Happy Heist units, and shipping these out to all of you backers in a timely fashion is going to be a monster job!

But don't worry, we have planned for this eventually, after all, we want Happy Heist to go as far as it can! If this happens, we have a bunch of friends and family who are on board to temporarily join the team and help package and ship Happy Heist out as fast as possible. To make this even more achievable we are not offering fluff like t-shirts, hats, stickers, or any other kinds of shippable rewards that can slow us down, only the game itself.

It's simple: support our Kickstarter and you will get the game as soon as humanly possible!
