About

Rays of sunlight have just come over the horizon and are now hitting the dew on the flower petals.  As the sun rises, the great Queen Bee awakens from her slumber and sends her most loyal worker out of the hive to go and retrieve the first bit of morning pollen.  Unexpectedly, the worker bee returns to the Queen's nest to inform the Queen that there are other mysterious bees taking over their field.  Furiously, the Queen Bee storms out of her nest with all of her subjects and looks out of the hive to the field below.  Upon seeing the chaos the Queen Bee tells her colony to prepare for battle.  It is going to be a long day and there can only be one Queen Bee.

Queen Bee is a 2-6 player game where you attempt to protect your Queen Bee and kill the other Queen Bee(s). In a 3-6 player game you will want to attack quickly because once you kill the Queen Bee of another colony then their bees become loyal to you. Increase your army, be on the attack, but don't forget to protect your Queen! The game includes custom cards to manipulate your dice, affect your opponent or increase your power. The game ends when only one Queen Bee remains.

The game involves area-control, combat, hand management and dice manipulation. It also has a progressive-cooperative mechanic as teams are one by one taken over. It rewards teams on the move and attacking by having more “attack” only cards and tie-breakers where the attacking teams win. If you want to have the last Queen Bee remaining then you will want to be on the move early.

***Game duration is roughly 15 minutes per player.  A two player game lasts roughly 30 minutes while a 6 player game lasts roughly 90 minutes.

Below are the contents for the Queen Bee Level backers.  The Warrior Bee level backers will only have one game board (four player layout) and 4 teams of bees (60 miniatures).

As you can see - there are a lot of components to this game.  It would be very easy for the pieces to get all jumbled together in the box.  I am pleased to announce that I've been working with Noah Adelman from GameTrayz to make custom inserts to control the chaos.  He has made inserts for a number of games lately including The Grimm Forest and Dice Throne Season 2.

When bees attack other creatures they use their stingers to scare them away. However, did you know that when they attack other bees that they fight with swords, spears, pitchforks, frying pans and anything else that they can get their hands on? Well, now you know!

The teams are made up of one Queen Bee (30 mm), seven Warrior Bees (28 mm), and seven Worker Bees (25 mm).  I'm excited that Heriberto Martinez (the artist who designed the pieces for The Grimm Forest) also designed my pieces.  He was great to work with and I couldn't be happier with how the pieces turned out.  The designs have been drawn up to have each bee have a unique weapon/tool per team.  However, due to the cost of molding these miniatures - each team will start out with the above three poses, and additional poses will be released as stretch goals.  Each bee type has unique abilities in the game as follows:

The game includes a deck of 87 cards. Unless stated otherwise, cards can only be played during YOUR turn or during an attack that YOUR team is involved in (or that one of your bees joins).

Some cards in the deck can only be played when you are the attacking team, while others can be played anytime. Some cards, such as “Buzz Off” can be played anytime – even when it is not your turn.

The top of the card consists of a banner, symbol and a card title indicating the card name and when it can be played. The bottom of the card contains a brief description of how the card works.

The game includes two different types of dice. The black dice are the Warrior Bee dice and have numbers 0-4 on the six sides. The yellow dice are the Worker Bee dice and have numbers 0-3 on the six sides.

During an attack each team will get one Worker Bee dice for each Worker Bee in the battle and one Warrior Bee dice for each Warrior Bee in the battle. Each box includes 10 black Warrior Bee dice and 10 Yellow Worker Bee dice.

The game consists of a double-sided board.  There will be a 4-player board on one side and a 6-player board on the other side.  A picture of the board layout  is below:

The board has different sections as explained below:

Here is a brief How-To-Play video:

For a printer friendly version of the rules please click HERE .

In Queen Bee you will use your colony of bees to attack and try to take over the other colonies.  Battles involve the strategic use of cards and dice.  During your turn you can play any number of cards in your hand as you follow the following turn procedure.

If you choose to attack during your turn then you perform the following attack procedures.  Any attack succeeds if the attacking (offensive) team has a total dice roll value that is equal to or higher than the total dice roll value of the defensive team.

Most battles will involve a combination of Worker and Warrior Bees.  However, if a battle involves one of the last two Queen Bees then the game may potentially end if the Queen in the battle dies.

Below are some reviews from my listing at BoardGameGeek.com.  For all the reviews please see:

 https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/256391/queen-bee

"If you like strategy board games, this is for you! I learned too late that you have to be on the offense if you want to win. Playing defensively will only prolong your eminate death! I also really enjoyed the idea that even if your queen dies you still get to play. The cards can make an apparent underdog into the victor, and creates new experiences and strategies every time you play. Can’t wait to own it!"      - Danielle Best, playtester

"Fun game, easy to learn but complex enough that no two rounds are the same. I could easily sit and play several times in a row without losing interest."      - Brian Moss, playtester

"I played this game at the St. George board game convention. Me and my girlfriend really enjoyed it as it was easy to learn - just a few instructions and you are ready to go - but still highly competitive and strategically demanding, especially if you play with five players like we did. The action cards add a nice tactical level to the game and are also very much self-explanatory. There are many ways to win and support each other as well as totally disrupt your opponents tactics."     - Yves Mokwa, STG Con attendee

"I loved this game! At first I was afraid it would be difficult to catch on to, but the rules are not difficult to follow and game play is fun! I enjoyed the strategy that was involved. It’s also nice that once you are “out” you still get to play. Super fun game!     - Shelby Garner, playtester

"Such a fun game! The kind of game you can play multiple times and still enjoy! There’s always a surprising outcome!"     - Kade McMullin, playtester

"I really enjoyed the game. I’m a visual person and I loved the board and the pieces. I enjoyed the strategy of the game and the variety of actions a player has. The first time I played it I wanted to play it again immediately."     - Alicia Croft, playtester

In order to use as much funds as possible for the actual game components, shipping will be passed on to my backers.  Shipping will be collected post campaign once I can finalize my shipping rates with my fulfillment centers.  The fulfillment centers can't give truly accurate pricing until they know quantities to the various parts of the world.

I am currently working on getting the best shipping prices that I can for my backers.  This is a heavy game weighing in at 3.3 lbs - 4.2 lbs depending on the stretch goals that get unlocked (1.5 - 1.9 kg).  The initial quote that I got from a company had US shipping at roughly $17.  This is higher than I wanted for my backers so I have since shopped around and did some redesigning of my box and game components so that my game would fit in a flat rate box for my US backers.  This would cap the max shipping at $14 for US backers if this ended up being the best alternative.

Part of the complexity with shipping comes from fulfillment centers being able to get better rates based on increased quantity.  Where I have no idea what my quantity will be in the US, CA, EU, AU, JPN, CN and the rest of the world it has been hard to nail down a price.  However, below is my best estimate of what the shipping rates will be based on the current bids that I have (not including foreign customs and taxes).

I will continue to work with my fulfillment center and discuss pricing as my campaign progresses.  If I get enough EU backers then I will also use a fulfillment company in the EU to lower european shipping costs and save on taxes and customs.  I want this game in as many homes as I can and will continue to negotiate prices until it is time to pay the fulfillment centers.

Mike and Larissa have been married since 2005 and have 5 little kids that daily destroy their house.  Once the little ones are put to bed, Mike and Larissa enjoy working on projects and playing games together.  During their married life, their house has been the "Game Night" house and they have had as many as 20+ people over for game night.  They love playing games!

Queen Bee has been a passion project for Mike and Larissa.  In the beginning of the game development they wanted to make a game that played well for 4 - 6 players, as they often have multiple couples over to play games. But they didn't want to stop with just making it a great game for 4 - 6 players, they also wanted it to be great at  2 - 3 players as they often just play games against each other.  So they worked hard on board layout, different cards and decks and play tested their game over 100 times and took it to multiple game conventions.  The result was a pretty awesome game (in our opinion) that plays fantastic at 2 - 6 players!  It even feels different at each player count level.

Regardless of whether you primarily play this as a 2 player, 3 player, 4 player, 5 player or 6 player game... we think you are going to enjoy this game a lot.

Additionally, Mike and Larissa recognize that the gaming world is filled with designers trying to make it.  We appreciate your support in our efforts to make a name for ourselves in this industry.  With this being our first game we wanted to have awesome game pieces at an affordable price in an effort to establish a following of supporters.  We have decided to take a hit on our margin for this game project in an effort to provide you with a quality game at an unbeatable price.  $49 for our Queen Bee level backers is as low as we could safely go.  We hope you see the value in the quality of the game and the quality of the game components.

We were first introduced to Kickstarter in 2015.  Since that time we have backed over 10 projects (mostly games) and have grown to love the Kickstarter community and the anticipation that comes with a Kickstarter campaign.

When we set out to design Queen Bee, we wanted to design a great game that had high quality components.  Part of the gaming experience is the environment that the game creates.  In order to create a great environment you have to have great components.  In order to have great components you have to have a lot of money... or have a little bit of money from a lot of backers.  We don't have a lot of money, so naturally we went to Kickstarter.  We believe that by going this route we can offer a high quality game at an affordable price.  With the listing of components that we have we feel that our pricing is an incredible deal.  What say you? :)

Risks and challenges

Through this process we have discovered that making a game is incredibly hard. You would think that making a set of rules would be easy enough - but different groups play differently and different scenarios come up... and what's the rule for that scenario? We have had this game play tested over a hundred times, tweaked it and have made it the game that we wanted it to be. We are excited about the result!

... but we didn't do it alone. This project has been a very methodical process for us. We have leaned on experts in the business who have successfully run Kickstarter campaigns themselves. We are cautious in business and want to make sure we have a plan to overcome obstacles before they arrive. We have done analysis over other successful campaigns to set reasonable expectations for pledges, stretch goals and delivery. We have a manufacturer lined up and ready to begin production. We just need the funds to make this dream come true.

Although we have been very methodical in this project we do believe that there may be some hiccups along the way. It is our hope that when these hiccups do arrive that we will be able to make it seamless for our backers and we will do everything in our power to make sure that the process goes as smoothly as possible.
