Start turning your ideas into reality, delivering on your promises, and getting things done by being one of the first to get ahold of the Project Management for You book. By supporting this campaign you will help me with the costs of self-publishing this book.
Life is a project.
You have had many ideas for businesses, products, backyard projects, books - but don't seem to be able to accomplish or finish most of them. You are full of ideas, and perhaps even tried taking action like creating to-do lists, brainstorming in a notebook, creating mind maps, etc.
Yet life continues as is, and those projects are never done. You put those ideas on the back burner and hope that one day you will get around to it when life isn't as busy, or when the kids are a little older, or when you retire. Or, or, or... Sound familiar?
Perhaps you even feel a little down on yourself when you see others create new things, complete exciting projects, achieve and move forward in life, especially when you know you are just as capable as they are. Maybe you feel they have a drive that you lack, or they are naturally organized and disciplined, or maybe don’t need as much sleep as you do.
But here is where it gets interesting: if you keep doing what you always do, you’ll keep getting what you always get.
The truth is you will never get around to it. Life doesn’t take a break for you to work on that dream project. Life stays busy, the kids do get older...but with it new responsibilities and roles will present themselves to you.
Yet you know that if you could work on some of those projects that you dream about, you could really make a change in your life.
Life doesn't wait. Every day you procrastinate, or feel paralyzed by the complexity of the projects you want to take on, it’s one less day for you to enjoy the results that those projects would bring to you.
Not too long ago, I was the smart kid who did well in school but could not accomplish much in life. I was disorganized, unreliable, and without direction. I couldn’t focus on anything and constantly forgot important things. I was late for appointments. I lost my keys. I was a mess.
But since I started learning project management, my life completely changed. Project management provided me with a system and a way to approach the complex things I wanted to do to. I started acting on my ideas and making them real. Project management made a real difference in everything I do.
The solution for the problem of dealing with complexity and turning ideas into reality is project management.
The problem, however, is that project management is an approach used almost exclusively by the business world, and especially by large corporations. As a result, most of the literature and material related to project management uses language not meant for individuals or small business owners and solopreneurs.
In this book, I will borrow from 10 years of experience as the project manager for a small family business, plus all the insights I have gained by interviewing countless project management experts as the host of the Project Management for the Masses Podcast and the Construction Industry Podcast.
Project Management for You will sum up all that I have learned as I implemented project management principles, tools, and techniques to my work and personal life. I will share with you life-changing project management ideas so you can start taking action to turn your ideas into reality.
With the confidence that you can turn an idea into something real, you will be able to make promises to your clients, boss, spouse, kids, etc. knowing that you will be able to deliver on them.
Why am I qualified to write this book?
I am a certified Project Management Professional, by the Project Management Institute.
But that is not what sets my experience apart.
As I mentioned before, project management is an art for the business world. Typically, it is the game played by large corporations. As a result, most of the books, training materials, and tools, are designed for that target market.
Though I am in project management, I am definitely not in a large corporation.
Our company has just 3 full time employees.
When I started studying for my certification exam, I was forced to make sense of the language and lingo in a way that would be relevant to my projects, my ideas, and my goals.
It was in this process that project management started to make sense to me. Once I started implementing the ideas from all the project management body of knowledge, I immediately saw results.
Project management gave me a systematic approach to making ideas real, which in turn boosted my confidence to deliver on my promises. I started to get things done.
Besides my experience working as a project manager, I am also the host of the weekly Project Management for the Masses podcast, in which I talk about project management to an audience of thousands of listeners.
Writing is something I enjoy, and besides my own website, I am a regular contributor to other blogs related to project management. Having this campaign funded will be a fantastic encouragement for me to take my writing to a whole new level.
One of the decisions I made, based on my experience dealing with complexity, is to get help. Since I have never written and self-published a book before, I am working with a book writing/publishing coach who has done this literally hundreds of times.
My coach, Patrick Snow, will be a big contributor of this project, as we will write this book together: I with the content, he with the strategy. I am extremely excited to have him as a partner during this entire process.
Writing and self-publishing a book takes time and resources (money).
I have already invested some of my own funds into starting this project. I also plan to contribute more of my own money in the future.
Rest assured, my intent is not to put the entire funding of this project on you.
Your backing of this project will help me complete the work that it takes to self-publish a book. Here are some of the deliverables that are necessary for a project like this:
- Cover design
- Interior design
- ISBN registration
- Library of Congress registration
- Other professional services
Even if you decide not to back this project, I'm still bringing you some value.
In conjunction with the start of this campaign, I am also launching a FREE audio podcast series called Project Management for You.
In this series I interview some of the best project managers I know as we try to break down and explain the most important principles, tools, and techniques of project management.
Below is an example of one of the episodes, in which I speak with project management expert Andy Kaufman:
This book and campaign are projects
Guess what? This book is a project! I am making a promise to you, and I know I will deliver. That is the confidence that project management gives me.
Join me and back this campaign.
Risks and challenges
Risks and challenges are part of every project. In fact, effectively managing risks is an important part of the work of a good project manager.
I believe the main challenge that this project presents is the schedule. Therefore the main risk is the book not being shipped within the planned timeframe.
I am, however, confident that this risk is small. I am dedicated to this project, and have the assistance of a coach who has helped hundreds of other authors successfully self-publish their own books within schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
