About

To celebrate the final week of Niten on Kickstarter we are sharing a bonus image from our digital downloads tier. This is available in various formats for phones, tablets, desktops and even a3, a4 and a5 sizes if you want to print a poster.

We need your help to make this happen! Spread the word, keep the faith and let's bring this little game into the world. And remember; The VR version of Niten will be given free upon completion to everyone who backs the minimum £15 release of Niten on Kickstarter as a thank you for supporting us.

Influenced by titles such as ‘Dear Esther’ and ‘Gone Home’, ‘Niten’ is a story-driven exploration game experienced through first-person gameplay. Discover audio fragments which narrate the history of the island and its previous inhabitants; a Samurai master and his orphan-child student, and the fierce battles and mysterious events that took place there. An accompanying graphic novel illustrating the story becomes unlocked as you uncover the story fragments.

Built using Unreal Engine 4 and with assets created using Speedtree, 'Niten' presents a beautiful, lush landscape. The dynamic weather and diverse lighting makes each playthrough unique and mesmerizing.

Experience a place where ancient Japanese culture meets breathtaking scenery, blossoming cherry trees and a sky that will tell you a story in itself. Watch the weather turn and see the sun go down, feel the chill of the morning mist and let dandelion seeds sweep past you as you are free to discover and uncover the mystery of the island.

‘Niten’ is designed to provide an atmospheric and tranquil experience for you as a player and you will be free to roam the island in any way you desire as you search to discover its secrets.

Let fireflies guide you through the night as you walk up the hills of the island. Feel the sand and water on your toes as you wander along the beach. From the deepest bamboo forest, the open field with its colourful and vibrant flowers to the spine-chilling darkness of the mysterious cave and the serene lake filled with water lilies, the island is yours to explore as you wish.

In response to a really insightful article by CLIQIST, I have decided to add a daily exploration section. Each day you will discover a journal page from the island. These may change a little when we get to final release but I want to help paint a picture of the story to give you all a feel for this aspect of the game. I will also include a poll after each entry so you can let me know what you would choose to do next!

You have arrived on the island and just found a page from someone's journal on the beach. Who were these people, what did he mean this is where death is? You look up from the page and notice two paths. One takes you inland to the islands coastal forest and the other leads along the shoreline and up a steep gravel path. In our vote, 69% of you chose to follow the shoreline to the gravel path...

You continue up the narrow gravel path that leads up the cliffside to the highest point of the rock face, you are almost at the top when you hear a sound, something faint and soft like a dull bell. You turn to look and notice a clearance to your right. Do you keep moving to the top of the cliff side? Or investigate the noise in the clearance? In our vote, 100% of you chose to investigate the noise in the clearance...

Beyond the shrine, inland in the distance something catches your eye, something glistening. A lake? And next to it some kind of old wooden structure, could it be a cabin? It's getting dark and the ocean air suddenly cuts you with it's evening chill. You realise that you're thirsty and tired but you also need to get your bearings. Do you leave the clearance and continue up to the peak? Or head inland and investigate the lake area? In our vote, 53% of you chose to leave the clearance and continue up to the peak.

You continue up to the peak, the sun is low on the horizon and it'll be night soon. You're hoping at the top you'll be able to see enough of the island to find your bearings and hopefully locate some shelter. You finally arrive at the top...

You cast your eyes over the shoreline and see nothing but an old boat half buried in the sand. Behind you the path continues so you follow it inland. It leads you down to the other side of the ridge and branches in two directions, one way to the lake and the cabin you saw earlier and the other into a dense bamboo forest. 57% of you chose to enter the bamboo forest!

Thank you all for playing! To Be Continued...

As stated in our 3rd update we will be making a standalone VR version of Niten. The game will be rebuilt from the ground up to maximise it's efficiency and frame rates for VR and will be released as a standalone product. The VR version of Niten will be given free upon completion to everyone who backs the minimum £15 release of Niten on Kickstarter as a thank you for supporting us.

Take a break from exploring the island to discover your inner Zen-master as you cultivate your lodge and garden with a wide range of alternative decor, foliage, sand-gardens, water features, statues and unique collectible items.

With professional voice-acting and an original, studio-engineered score, ‘Niten’ will provide a fully immersive audio experience in addition to its polished visuals.

The stories of the Samurai master and his orphan-child student are told through audio. In collaboration with the Edinburgh Japanese Society, the script will be recorded in both English and Japanese, with subtitles available, and will be presented with the professionalism, skills and in-depth knowledge of native Japanese speakers.

At the end of each playthrough of the game you will be able to download the story fragments you have uncovered as pages of a fully illustrated graphic novel.

Four Seasons - £18,000

Watch the environment and its content change with the seasons.

Additional Wildlife - £20,000

In addition to the diverse plant and animal life already present, the environment will include a wider and more intriguing variety of authentic wildlife.

I can still remember the first time I saw ‘Shogun Assassin’. I was 17 years old, sitting in my living room in Edinburgh, Scotland, and couldn’t believe what I was watching. As a kid growing up in the 80s’ I had developed somewhat of an obsession with old school Kung-Fu and Ninja movies but nothing had prepared me for this.

At this day I can still remember the moment I pressed play on my VCR and a whole new world opened in front of me. For me, this was it. One of the greatest movies ever made. From that day nothing has ever reached me on the same level. What really got me was the scenery, the story, the narrative and my love for that type of storytelling has carried over and become one with my other great love in life – video games.

I spent all of my years in Primary School going hungry as I spent all my lunch money on Robocop, Super hang-on and Arkanoid in the local arcade hall. My buses home from school were always “late”. Ever since then video games have always played a large part of my life and my passion for them is just as strong now as it was back then.

I have always loved games that reach you on a deeper level and this is why recent titles such as ‘The Stanley Parable’, ‘Dear Esther’ and ‘Gone home’ have been a great inspiration for my current work.

I have gone into this project with my eyes open and with no misconceptions. I have always understood that this was going to be incredibly hard work and I have been working on Niten with every piece of free time I could muster since June 2015.

With 'Niten' I wanted to take the love and craftsmanship of the titles I have loved for years and use those influences to tell my own story. We all know the moment when you play a video game or watch a movie and you suddenly stop and think “wow, that looks incredible”. That is the moment I am basing my game on and I want to combine that beautiful scenery with a fascinating narrative telling the story of the island and its very own Lone wolf and Cub.

Risks and challenges

One challenge will be the implementation of Virtual Reality. This will require a separate release date of an estimated four months beyond general release due to the deeply involved nature of the task. To achieve this I will completely remake the game with VR as a sole focus.

During the process of developing any game there is always the risk of unforeseen circumstances which will have a negative impact on the timeline. I have however taken this into consideration when setting my release date to give me that room to move.

The greatest challenge I foresee releasing a title on Windows/PC platforms is going to be providing a stable release on such a vast amount of hardware combinations. I am using the STEAM hardware survey to target the most common configurations while at the same time providing options for greater visual enhancements on more powerful systems. Achieving a stable release is going to require a huge amount of testing, something I have factored into my timeline.

    The isles of Niten!

Ever wanted your own private island? Now you can. Made with consultation we will discuss look and content of your island. The island will feature all the day/night cycles and weather elements of the main island and both locations will be available to you in the game.

This is exclusive content. Players of the standard version of the island will be able to see your island but not travel to it unless you wish that to be the case.

This is not a "new game". There will not be any story content, it is purely for the enjoyment of exploring and owning your own island.

The island will be up to the same size as the main island!
