Wow…what a ride it’s been! My heartfelt thanks to each of you for your support and sacrificial contributions. I’m unspeakably grateful.
Despite this campaign not successfully reaching its goal, I’m ELATED to say that some extravagant last-minute contributions are changing the landscape.
Please visit www.GroovesAndSushi.com for further information (if the site’s not coming up when you click, please give it a few hours - my web guy is scrambling!).
Again, my profuse gratitude for your interest & ongoing support. Let’s make some music together!
Hi & thanks in advance for taking the time to check this out! :^)
My name is Norm Stockton, and I'm a bassist/solo artist based in Orange County, CA. I've been a professional musician for about 25 years and am so grateful to have been able to share my music around the world.
I must reiterate what I expressed in the above video clip: I'm SO thankful for the great number of you who have been absolutely instrumental (no pun intended) in supporting me throughout my career. God bless you hugely.
I'm incredibly excited to share a new project I've been dreaming up for the past few years.
GROOVES & SUSHI is a live music performance video series to be shot in my living room (over 4 separate sessions) with a rotating cast of absolutely stellar, iconic musicians. Some of the players have appeared on my previous albums & some are fresh faces; the roster tentatively includes Gregg Bissonette (Ringo Starr, David Lee Roth), Chris Coleman (Israel Houghton, Beck), Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting, Herbie Hancock), Zoro (Lenny Kravitz, Sean Lennon), Doc Gibbs (Grover Washington, Jr., Whitney Houston), Lincoln Brewster (solo artist, Steve Perry), Eddie Brown (Stevie Wonder, George Duke), among others! Yes...scariness will ensue. :^)
Interspersed between the jams will be footage with these amazing musicians sharing road stories, thoughts on music, etc., as we hang out over some sushi (those of you familiar with my work were waiting for that one!).
The performances will be tracked live, mixed, mastered and released (both digitally & on CD) as my 3rd album as a solo artist. Full-song performance videos will also be consolidated to DVD. Both the CD & DVD will be released after the 4th session for obvious reasons (hard to release what hasn't been recorded yet), but the tunes & video series will be released digitally as they're completed!
The music will be instrumental and stylistically related to my Pondering the Sushi & Tea in the Typhoon albums, but with some fresh & different approaches to instrumentation & arrangement. If you enjoyed any of my previous projects, I'm confident you're going to DIG Grooves & Sushi. :^)
The goal amount is ambitious...and I've honestly wrestled over it. The reality is that this project is actually 3 projects in one: live music video series, a DVD, and a CD. And while they're all absolutely committed to music over economics, I can't ask these iconic players to take a financial beating to commit to my sessions as other work offers come in.
I've spent thousands of my own money preparing my studio over the past few years (I have "skin in the game," as they say), but there are countless expenses in order to accomplish the project with excellence, including:
- some additional gear
- musicians (4 different ensembles over 4 separate shoots)
- video crew (all shoots & editing)
- tracking engineer (4 recording dates)
- CD & DVD authoring & replication
- graphic design
- photography, etc.
- Kickstarter fees & shipping costs for reward fulfillment
- construction (need to put a hole in the wall between my living room and studio to pass my audio snake through!)
- ...and more. It definitely adds up!
To be completely candid, the goal amount is actually the lowest to where I can feasibly proceed (any less and the project quality wouldn't be consistent with my previous work). Any surplus will help me secure the players I mentioned - and even more if the campaign exceeds expectations. Larry Carlton? Oz Noy? A Typhoon CD reprise with John Patitucci, Michael Manring, Etienne Mbappé, or ?!?
Your partnership is absolutely critical. It's not an overstatement to say that this project can't happen without you. As you probably know, Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing proposition; if the goal isn't met, you won't be charged and I will receive nothing.
I hope you'll consider partnering with me on this project. I'm SO stoked to share this new music with you!
If you look along the right side of this page, you’ll see that we’ve come up with some really cool gifts for your participation! No pledge is too small (seriously - it all helps!), but that said...wanna go sailing off Dana Point with me?!? :^)
**TAX DEDUCTIBLE OPTION (just added!): If you would prefer to make a tax-deductible donation of $500 or more to this campaign, CLICK HERE. I am a grant recipient of The Grove Center for the Arts & Media. If the campaign does not reach the funding goal, you will have the option of receiving a full refund of your donation or leaving it for me to apply toward proceeding with this project. Thank you!**
The hope is to book sessions for GROOVES & SUSHI this summer…with your help!
Thank you profusely & please share this with anyone you think might be interested.

Risks and challenges
There are a multitude of risks and challenges associated with an endeavor like Grooves & Sushi. Everything from gear mishaps to schedule conflicts to the inherent challenges associated with turning your family home into a recording and video studio...it will be an exhilarating ride.
The good news, if I may speak openly, is that I have a track record of producing high-quality projects. As with all of my previous projects, I have exhaustively researched and calculated expenses so I won't encounter anything catastrophic & unexpected. To put it simply, if the goal is met, you have my word that the project will happen.
In addition, I have worked with almost all of the players & production people I'm planning to involve and know they are all equally committed to and have their own track records of world-class artistry. I know this project will be something quite special.
Short of a tsunami strike, all of the potential contingencies are ones I've dealt with on numerous previous projects (by the way, I live 8 miles inland...so no tsunami worries). :^)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
