Cinema 5D

Cinescopophilia

My name is Jeremy Sawatzky, A machinist and engineer from British Columbia Canada. I started this journey when I was 20 years old. I was an aspiring cinematographer at the time, browsing equipment I could only hope to own one day. I stumbled onto a picture of a camera crane and noted the simplicity of the design. I set out to build one.

This is where I ended up.

I will try to make this long story short and sweet. The Boda Jib didn't just congeal out of some goop i found in the forest. I've spent thousands of hours designing, building, testing, failing, motivating and redesigning.

What I have come up with is a product that I believe fills a hole in the market. Every camera crane or jib I have come across has had at least 1 of 5 failings.

  • Size
  • Weight
  • Setup Time
  • Rigidity
  • Capacity

I set out to remedy those obstacles with my jib. But not without failing multiple times. My first crane weighed 85 pounds and took three people 20 minutes to setup. My second crane lacked rigidity. My third model lacked capacity. The fourth... you get the idea. The hard work has paid off and I am happy to announce the Cinetech Industries Boda Jib.

The Boda jib features a never before seen folding design utilizing precision CNC cut aircraft grade aluminum, stainless steel and carbon fiber components. It was designed in the most advanced 3D modeling software available. Tested across the globe from the tsunami stricken Philippines to the frigid winter of the Northwest Territories.

Boda will utilize a 3/8 screw mount on the bottom of the fluid base to easily attach to any half ball or tripod head.

Boda uses a high grade stainless steel cable assembly. This is how the camera is leveled.

The end of the jib will utilize a 75mm bowl mount to allow mounting of tripod heads, half balls and pan-tilt heads. A 100mm bowl will be made an option if requested.

I am ready to launch but I need your help. Being a small startup usually has one huge disadvantage, lack of capital. I need the funds in order to make the part orders. I could build these one at a time but that would mean twice the cost and you would probably have to wait until 2020 to receive your jib. It is essential with any product to make bulk orders as it drastically reduces the price per unit ratio.

I need $45,000 to launch my product. $35,000 will make up the bulk of the materials cost alongside CNC services. $5,000 will be allocated for tooling costs, jigs and hardware, $5,000 for the Kickstarter fees.

This is where I currently stand. I have manufactures lined up to produce parts while assembly will remain in my hands. This will keep quality control at the highest level. I refuse to let a subpar piece of equipment be shipped. Customer service will be of utmost importance. I am an extremely strong believer that releasing a quality product is only half the job. A customer that is well taken care will spread the word and help grow the business.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

The model shown in the photos and certain parts of the video is slightly different from the final version. As I did not have funding to have my current model fully CNC machined, I manually machined all of the parts myself. The accuracy, finish of the released model will be far more impressive. Small changes such as the base design and the camera support have been changed. The overall concept and 90% of the crane will look and function exactly as described.

Risks and challenges

The main risk involved with this venture is unforeseen delays with part orders. If the parts ordered are not to spec or not produced in time, that would translate to a backup of orders with customers not receiving the product within the time allotted.

The second risk involves an overload of orders in which case extra staff will be hired to handle the extra workload. I particularly like this risk.

Thirdly, the project may not reach its funding goal in which case I will have to search out other avenues for funding. This will further draw out the time it takes to bring the product to market.
