About

                                 ____________________________________________

                                 ____________________________________________

Giapetta’s Workshop is a magical world brought to life through stunning interactive jewelry, cool crafting and an animated Adventure-Story App. Your Gia Gem necklace is an extraordinary input device that allows you to join Gia on a thrilling quest to learn computer coding. Explore an enchanted universe to find and collect hidden spells. Create the code to activate the spell. Cast it by placing your pendant on the screen, then watch the magic unfold!

We have teamed up with FABberz, a New York and London based laser cutting studio, to bring our intricate Gia Gem pendants to life. The jewelry comes in a beautiful, laser cut wooden box that includes marvelous materials so girls can fashion their pendants to suit their personal styles.

Giapetta’s Workshop uses three elements to inspire girl’s creativity and their passion for programming:

When it comes to technology education, girls are falling behind. At Giapetta’s Workshop, our mission is to change that.

It is estimated that there will be 1.2 million new tech jobs by 2020, but the gender gap in tech fields continues to grow.

                           Source                                                                  Source

Only 12% of girls learn about technology in schools and after-school programs.

Putting the "A" in STEAM

When we set out to develop Giapetta’s Workshop to teach girls to code, we decided to incorporate a strong arts element into it. Many girls don’t connect with traditional science technology engineering and math subjects. Our crafting component is designed to attract girls who enjoy art activities.

But the art in Giapetta’s Workshop is more than just a way to entice girls to code. We want kids to understand that coding can be a creative endeavour. The puzzles and challenges in Giapetta’s Workshop offer kids lots of opportunities to be imaginative: to use code to create music, art and animation.

Art teaches important skills:

By adding the arts to our coding curriculum, we are preparing kids to be creators, innovators and creative problem solvers.

That's why we want Giapetta's Workshop to help 5000 girls around the world get started with coding!

All of our material products are produced in NYC or London by FABberz digital fabrication studios.

The FABberz productions team focuses primarily on being "masters" of materials, and constantly pushing the limits of what can be achieved when you subject them to endless DigiFab processes. They experiment with making rigid materials flexible through pattern design, or changing the properties of opaque materials with engraving to make them translucent, like the iridescent Radiant Rainbow, which can be engraved at different depths to refract light in surreal ways!

Once we have made it through development, our goal is to give girls the ability to custom order more jewelry in different materials and colours from FABberz directly through the app.

By partnering with DigiFab designers and engineers, the customization possibilities we can achieve are quite literally endless!

Fred Ellman has many years designing children’s exhibits, children’s gardens and playthings. Raised by a fashion illustrator mom and toy inventing dad, Fred comes to the Giapetta's Workshop with an understanding of the confluence of fashion and fun. With a background in Architecture and Exhibit Design, coupled with a lifelong immersion in the toy development world, Fred has cultivated the mindset of a playful designer.

Steve Ellman has participated in the development of toys for major toy companies including Hasbro, Fisher Price, Tonka, Milton Bradley and Parker Brothers. Growing up in an extremely creative family infused Steve with an enthusiastic ability for design creation. At age seven, his first toy concept was developed by his father, and he was influenced by his fashion illustrator mother to pursue a career in the arts. He is proud to present Giapetta’s Workshop as the culmination of years of multi-disciplinary knowledge.

Ellen Leerburger brings over 25 years of experience as an expert of audience advocacy, museum exhibit design, storytelling and leadership, and arts management specifically managing project teams for clients such as The Muhammed Ali Center, The Smithsonian Institution and the Miami Children's Museum.

Jill Golick lives at the corner of TV and digital. She has more than 25 years experience as a television writer and producer, working on such series as Sesame Street and Sesame Park, Annedroids, Instant Star, Beet Party and Kratts Creatures. As a new media creator, Jill has created, written and produced four original, cutting-edge, multiplatform series including the award-winning, multiplatform detective series for tweens, Ruby Skye P.I.

Emily Angell teaches tile-based computer programming with Scratch at The Digital Arts Experience (thedae.com) in Westchester County, New York. She enjoys developing curriculum, teaching and planning events by day, and making music by night. She hopes to inspire creativity in her students through the art of programming.

Jon Stokes received his BS in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech, but because computer programming is more exciting, he writes code for a living. He is a freelance iOS developer and designer, preceptor of young'uns, avid game jammer and occasional arcade machine builder. You can see his work at jonstoked.com.

Dani Kaulakis is a freelance Illustrator based out of Bellefonte, Pa. She specializes in digital and vector design and creates art for use in a variety of different media and genres. She is best known for her work on the Team USA Roller Derby design and for her steampunk inspired style.

Evan Lurie has composed for film, television, and the concert hall. His previous children's television work includes the Nick Jr. shows "Oswald the Octopus" and "The Backyardigans".

Relish is a digital studio that focuses on great experiences and great results. Their team of designers, developers, and producers specialize in all things digital but deep down, they're all just creative problem solvers. Relish recently won the 2015 Digi Award for Best Mobile Entertainment for their work on WeirdWood Manor.

Risks and challenges

This project is multifaceted with many participants working on different pieces. Once we have been successfully funded, keeping everyone on schedule and making sure that the different pieces all complement each other and work as a cohesive whole will take great communication, a collaborative environment, and skilled project management. We will also face challenges for each facet of the project.

Education Challenges:
Making sure the coding curriculum is appropriately targeted is no simple feat. We want kids to be engaged and challenged but not frustrated. We want to move them ahead step by step without losing kids who already have some programming know how under their belts. This will mean working closely with educators and testing rigorously with real kids. Then making adjustments and testing again.

App Development Challenges:
In terms of the app development, we'll be balancing several factors: we want to iterate quickly but we also want to build a robust skeleton that can be the basis for future adventures in Giapetta's story. We want the Story-app to be a deep and rich interactive experience but within budget and time constraints. This is where imagination and creativity on the part of the team is called for.

Manufacturing and Distribution Challenges:
We have had much experience in sourcing and price engineering, but new and unforeseen hurdles arise in any new project. We are small and very lean and doing our professional best to plan out a smart strategic fulfillment chain. So far we are very excited about our delivery system with FABberz and have plans to scale up to meet a large demand with potential multiple fabrication sites, which we have not worked with in the past. We believe we will have the management in place, but it’s a new paradigm for us. We are confident we have a good plan, but realize it may need some tweaking once it is called upon to respond to demand.
