It is the dawn of the 28th Century.
The Third Renaissance, or Bright Age as future historians will call it, is at its zenith.
After the catastrophic first contact with extra-terrestrial life that led to the horrific Solar System war, humanity clawed its way back from the brink and finally reached the stars. For millions of people, Earth’s sun is no more than another star in the night sky, a mote of light, a spiritual birthplace that they will never visit in their lifetimes.
It has been over a century since the Machine Civilisation gifted humanity technological marvels such as the Visser Cube, allowing wormhole travel across the vast chasms of interstellar space. Now interstellar distances grow ever shorter. How the myriad of splintered cultures view this gift varies. Some see it as a blessing, a way to draw humanity into a united whole. Others see it as a curse, robbing them of their individuality. And then there are those who would use it as a means to subjugate humanity and impose their own will upon all…
Across the River of Heaven, humanity clings to a scattering of islands in a sea of stars. Players can take on a multitude of roles in this future: a crew member on an interstellar trader, a member of the mysterious Engineers’ Guild, a body-hopping Intercessionist agent – out to manipulate human cultures to its own secret ends, a Renouncer Zealot – intent on destroying Artificial Intelligence in all its forms, or perhaps one of the Reclaimers – planetary engineers dedicated to terraforming any viable planet they happen upon…
This project is to raise money for the art for River of Heaven, a science fiction game set in Earth’s far future written by John Ossoway the author of Cthulhu Rising for Call of Cthulhu. The game manuscript is ready to be laid out, I just need the art.
D101 Games could fund the art, but it would severely restrict our release schedule for the next year. If this project funds we will avoid this situation. Also the more money raised the more art I can commission and it can be in colour (these are stretch goals 1 & 3 respectively). Also if this project successfully funds, further money will go via a series of stretch goals to produce the first book of adventures. (stretch goal 4)
About the Game
River of Heaven uses D101 games' OpenQuest rules engine; a sleek and streamlined D100 rule set that enables you to maintain the tempo of your stories whilst keeping the rules simple and in the background.
In the self-contained core rulebook you will find:
The OpenQuest Rules Engine
Tailored to a hard sci-fi setting.
Simple Character Generation
Enabling you to go from concept to fully finished character as quickly as possible.
Humanity has found many ways to improve upon what nature created. Quickly augment your character with the latest biotech/nanotech upgrades.
All the weapons, armour and other types of equipment your character might need to go adventuring in the 28th century.
Information on how to get around the River of Heaven universe, be it lowly pack animal on a frontier dirt farm or an interstellar trader equipped with an exotic stellar-tap drive.
In addition to a timeline spanning 1000 years of future history, River of Heaven includes an introduction to the Bright Age, the default play setting for the game. It also includes a campaign setting – the Kentauran Hegemony – and information about all the colonised star systems at the start of the 28th century.
An example adventure
Reunion is an introductory adventure designed to get you up and running River of Heaven as soon as possible. It can be played as a one-off, or as the start of a campaign.
Ideas for adventure ideas set in the River of Heaven universe, covering a wide range of styles and themes.
Friends and Foes
An A-Z list of lifeforms that may be encountered by the player characters during their adventures. It includes humans from the various divergent cultures and castes, mundane animals encountered on many worlds of humanity, and some more exotic creatures too.
The introductory chapter can be read here:
Once the project funds, all backers will get an early access version in pdf. This is ready now, so you can get playing in the River of Heaven universe as soon as the campaign ends.
As soon as the final pdf is ready it will be sent to all backers.
Backers who pledge for print versions (Orbital Worker and Deep Space Explorer) will get access to a Print on Demand (POD) copy at cost via DriveThruRpg.com.
What this means is when the print version of the book is ready, I will send you an voucher via email to an at cost version on DriveThruRpg.com. You will then pay the production cost and shipping to your home as part of your order with DriveThruRpg.com.
This means 100% of the backer money goes towards the project, instead of covering unexpected increased shipping or production costs when the project is finally finished.
The estimated additional cost of what is currently a 290 page book before art and layout, is as follows:
- Orbital Worker: Softcover £8 from UK printers/ $10 from US printers.
- Deep Space Explorer: Hardcover £11 from UK printers/ $15 from US printers.
NOTE: Estimates are based on whether the book comes from the UK Printer or the US Printer. Shipping costs are not included in the above figures, and are paid by the backer as explained above.
PLEASE NOTE: These estimates are above correct. The ones under the backer descriptions one the right hand side are incorrect. I can not change them, but have raised a ticket with Kickstarter to do so. Until they do please ignore the incorrect quotes.
DriveThruRPG.com has a a page for Shipping estimates (please note the book is currently around 260 pages which may increase during layout).
The above assumes that we reach the Colour Art stretch goal, if we don't and the book is black and white the cost will slightly lower.
Guildmaster, aka Hardcore Backer, is a very special backer level for those people who really want to see the project happen and succeed. If we have just ten of these wonderful backers the game successfully funds and will probably reach the stretch goals more readily (which is why its limited to ten backers). At this level, costing £100 (roughly $165 US), you'll receive the core rules in hardcover and any stretch goals such as the Binary Deep mini-campaign in print too as well as pdf copies. The main rulebook will be, signed by the author John Ossoway, and will contain a game artifact (NPC, tech item, vehicle) named and designed by you in conjunction with John. At this level we will pay for shipping and production of the books.
All backers will be listed in the core rule book and any additional books that are funded as a result of this campaign.
Stretch Goal 1 (£2000) More art! - FUNDED!
At this point I’ll double the number of art pieces in the book.
NEW! Stretch Goal 2 (£3000) Last Witness scenario.- FUNDED!
A self contained 45 page adventure, with six pre-generated chracters, and deckplans of two space ships. All backers pledging more than £6 will get a free pdf copy and Guildmasters will receive a free print copy.
Stretch Goal 3(£4000) Colour Art!
At this goal we make the whole core book colour.
Stretch Goal 4 (£5000) Binary Deep mini-campaign
Binary Deep is a mini-campaign designed to introduce a new group of Player Characters (PCs) to the River of Heaven universe. The campaign starts off with the PCs being tasked with tracking down the wayward son of a Nobleman. From here they will slowly become embroiled in a larger plot to destabilise their small corner of the galaxy! Every backer will get this as pdf download, with Orbital Workers and Deep Space Explorers being given access to POD print version at cost.
If we go above £5000 I will readily consider additional stretch goals, such as the release of the River of Heaven soundtrack (one track by Keef Baker can be found in the video), commissioning additional adventures and game aids such as star charts.
First Contact Add Ons
If you’ve not come across D101 games before, or only have a couple of our titles, the following pdf bundles are an excellent way of supporting the RoH campaign and also getting a bargain for yourself.
These Add Ons are available to purchase at any backer level. All you need to do is go to “Manage my pledge” and add the cost of the Add-on, do not change your backer level unless you want to. I will ask you to confirm which Add Ons you have purchased at the end of the campaign via the backer survey/
Standard First Contact (£10/ roughly $16 USD) This gives you the other two games that are part of the OpenQuest family: OpenQuest Deluxe (260 pages Full Colour art book of the Fantasy Game that RoH is based on) and The Company (Modern Warfare RPG). Normally these two games would come to £18.
Expanded First Contact (£50/ roughly $80 USD) You will be sent a pdf copy of everything that D101 currently produces (13 titles) for £50 ( for just under £100 worth of Pdfs)
Includes: OpenQuest 2 Deluxe, The Company, Hig 1-5, Gloranthan Adventures#5, Book of Glorious Joy, Crypts and Things RPG, Tomb of the Necromancers, Blood of the Dragons, Monkey, Worlds of Wordplay, Ye Little Book of HQ Fantasy.
More information about D101’s range of books can be found here:
Risks and challenges
Although this is my first Kickstarter campaign, I’ve previously used IndieGoGo to successfully fund and deliver Crypts and Things & OpenQuest 2nd Edition. The main lesson learnt from previous campaigns is that as the production staff are doing this part time we are vulnerable to outside Real Life pressures. Hence the six month estimate on delivery of the core rule book. Backers will be kept up to date as progress is made and if any delays are experienced.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
