About this project

Monkey is a Tabletop Roleplaying game based upon the Chinese Classic Novel  “The Journey to the West” or “Monkey” as it is commonly known in the West.

Stretch Goal 2 Defenders of the Dragon Empire (£4000 FUNDED!)

This Stretch Goal is for a chapter in the main rulebook that details how to run adventures for mortal characters from their perspective using tweaked and variant rules. NOW FUNDED!

Now Funding: Stretch Goal 3 The Eight Immortals (£4500) - Details see below.

I've also added Stretch Goals 3-6 and some Add-Ons to the campaign description - see below.

Monkey in a Nutshell

This is a story-telling game set in a mythical China, where out of grace Immortals seek redemption by escorting a vulnerable, mortal Monk to distant India. Braving many dangers along the way, to recover scrolls of Buddhist scripture, that are missing from the Chinese canon. The road through the wilderness is dangerous since all of Demon-kind has resolved to stop the pilgrims and the eat the Monk's flesh!

The game's simple rules, which use standard playing cards, allow for any sort of action that you can imagine, from fast paced kung-fu to heated debates.

The main rule book contains all that you need to play, except two packs of standard playing cards (one for the players and one for the referee) and your imagination.

Monkey the 2nd Incarnation

This project is funding development costs for a second edition of the game, or its 2nd Incarnation. The original game was released over five years ago. It was illustrated using appropriate stock art from old books. After numerous games over the years, the rules, though they still make sense, need some tidying up and streamlining. Also, there are ideas which have come to mind since its initial release that I want to include.

With the 2nd incarnation I'm looking to replace the stock art with new art from talented artists such as Peter Frain and Daniel Barker. Jon Hodgson who did the original cover has been commissioned to do a cover that features all four of the main characters from the book (Monkey, Pigsy, Sandy and Tripitaka).

I've also revised and streamlined the rules to make it even more easy to get into and play. I've added some new content that I've been itching to put in since it makes the game more enjoyable. The beta rules will be available to all backers in pdf form at the end of the kickstarter if it funds.

Tell Me More!!

More information about the game, rules previews, art examples can be found on the Monkey Blog as part of a series of posts called "23 Days of Monkey" that I posted in the run up to the Kickstarter opening:

Any Stretch Goals?

Yes.

Stretch Goal 1: if You See Buddha on the Road (£3000/ FUNDED)

This is an introductory adventure which if funded will appear in both the main rule book and as part of a separate Quick Start book.

Stretch Goal 2 Defenders of the Dragon Empire ( £4000/ FUNDED)

This Stretch Goal is for a chapter in the main rulebook that details how to run adventures for mortal characters from their perspective using tweaked and variant rules

Read more about it in this update.

Stretch Goal 3 The Eight Immortals (£4500 Unfunded)

This is the first mini-monkey and gives stories, descriptions and game stats for these Immortals of Taoist fame that can be meet by the pilgrims on their Journey to the West, acting as allies or foils depending on the players reactions to them.

Stretch Goal 4 If You Go Down to the Woods today (£5000 Unfunded)

This is the second mini-monkey. In this short adventure where the player immortals discover a village by a dark wood whose children have been spirited away by a supernatural entity. Randomisation of the Demon responsible for the abduction means that the scenario can be played repeatedly.

Stretch Goal 5 Monkeys and Dungeons (£5500 Unfunded)

If you and your friends are more used to playing a certain "Worlds Favourite Fantasy Roleplaying Game" this article explains how to painlessly move across from it and presents a number of exciting subterranean locales that your players can visit as a detour/short cut on the Road to India. Guidelines how to convert monsters from that game that shall not be named for copyright reasons into Monkey's monster format. Finally the Tomb of the First Emperor of China is presented as example adventure. This is mini-monkey number three.

Stretch Goal 6 The Ministry of Thunder (£6000 Unfunded)

A collection of five adventures centering on the Ministry of Thunder, a celestial ministry responsible for solving of crimes by supernatural entities committed on Earth. This short series of adventures is for Narrators and players who want a more traditional introduction to the world of Monkey, with each adventure being a pre-written scripted experience. This is an adventure book of 100+ pages. It will be available as a POD print version for Brass Monkey Pledge Level and upwards.

What are Mini-Monkeys?

"Monkey plucks a handful of hair out from his fur, wafts his breath over them and behold from his palm leap fully formed copies of himself spring forth to do battle with the Demon of Havoc!"

These are smaller stretch goals to keep things entertaining and fun during the long trudges between the larger more substantial stretch goals. Each is a short adventure or article. I'm initially planning eight of them, so there’s another five in addition to the ones I've revealed here. If all eight mini-monkey's fund I'll release a printed version that collects them all called the "Monkey Companion" that Brass Monkey's and upwards may get as an at cost POD. All Backers will get the mini-monkeys before they go on general release as PDF's.

I'll reveal more as we fund and I've got a number of exciting items in mind.

What's all this POD business?

Rather than me send you the books and lose money when mailing rates change or the production cost goes up due to me getting carried away and creating more content for stretch goals than I had initially costed for, the books will be fulfilled through DriveThruRPG.com using their Print on Demand service. When the book is ready you will be sent an at cost coupon linked to your DriveThruRPG.com account email address, and you will then pay the production cost and the postage that you want. I've done this successfully for the last two Kickstarters I've done.  It means that all the money raised is going to meet development costs. Also backers get their books at a slight discount to the final retail price.

This effects all the printed pledges, apart from the Retail and Golden Monkey where I order and then send out the books to you and printing and postage is included in your pledge.

What format are the books going to be in?

The same format as the current version 6" x 9" or the roughly equivalent A5 size, softcover, black and white internal illustrations with a page count somewhere between 150 and 200 pages. This at current DriveThruRpg POD prices costs $4 or £3 per book to produce.

Add-ons

To help the campaign I’m going to add the following Add-ons to the campaign.

Simply add the extra funds to your pledge and I’ll confirm what you purchased when the campaign ends via the Backer’s Surveys.

  • Extra copies of the Rulebook – £5 POD (you pay production + postage costs)

Existing D101 Games small story driven games, in PDf and option to get a POD print version:

  • Hunters of Alexandria - £5 pdf + POD Print
  • Project Darklight -£8 pdf + POD Print
  • Story games Bundle both the above as Pdf+ POD print Bundle £10.

I’m keeping this one simple on this these add-ons; if you only want the pdf don’t redeem the POD voucher when I send it to you. These add-ons will be issued once the Backers surveys are completed. More details about these two games

Risks and challenges

This is my sixth crowdfunding project and my third on Kickstarter.

I'm currently in the process of fulfilling the add on adventures of my previous campaign (Crypts and Things) but I have definite schedule of delivery that I am keeping to which will not interfere with this project.

Most of the writing on the main rulebook is done and it will be finished by the time that the Kickstarter ends. A beta version of the game without any additional stretch goal material or new art will be made available to backers at the end of the successful campaign.

The only risk in this project is me. As a micro-press publisher, if I get sick or have any real life issues this slows down delivery. If this happens I will keep you up to date with progress how ever slow and give you regular updates on revised release dates.
