Latest News: Stretch Goals 7 The Lizard People & 8 Beast Hybrid have funded.
If you want to see where the campaign is upto in the last 12 Hours, read this update:
Be a wild Barbarian, a deadly Fighter, a soul-torn Sorcerer or a sword sharp canny Thief, fighting evil tyrants and foul demons in a world rapidly dying and heading towards its final nemesis.
Crypts and Things (C&T) is a Swords and Sorcery Roleplaying game based upon the Old School Rules of the 70s/80s. It also draws upon the British fantasy games and game-books of that period to bring a distinctly dark and dangerous feel to the game.
It was originally released back in 2012. After three years of being available I'm looking to remake the book and need funds for production costs.
My first goal is bring Crypts and Things bang up to date in terms of both Art and Content.
Art. The art in C&T was done by various British Artists. While I stand by everything I put in the book, the overall tone was eclectic and a bit disconnected. So David M.Wright, whose style exactly matches the tone of the game, is going to do the entire book. Therefore it will have a deliciously dark consistency and tone throughout.
The majority of the internal art will be black and white, but there will be a number of full-page gray-scale illustrations.
Content. C&T Remastered will see a a full edit of the book and streamlining of the rules. There’s a few rules in C&T that I never use in my home game, because they involve a bit too much bean counting rather than simple Roll and Effect which I prefer. These rules have been recast into something more straightforward.
Note the following is currently not in the Backer's Beta, but will be included in the game if we reach basic funding.
Expanded Life paths. C&T currently has a small twenty entry table that you roll on three times to give your character's previous experience. Both fans of the current game and play testers of the current Beta say this is not enough, so I'm expanding this idea.
More Spells & Magic Items. I'll be to revisit the Spell lists and Magic Items chapters and add some more twisted and dark magic into the mix.
The Great Others and their Cultists. I hinted at the presence of these terrifying demons/gods but never detailed them in the 1st edition. In I’ll detail them in all their gory glory and David will illustrate them.
Zarth Revealed : Fragments of Fear. The current setting chapter,The Continent of Terror, will go into the Players' section and I write a new world guide for the Crypt Keeper’s section, called Fragments of Fear. This will focus on the secrets and provide more adventure ideas for each location, as well as encounter tables.
Mega Gaming Fun. This is the overall effect of the above changes. Over the years there have been some kind words said about Crypts & Things which have made me painfully aware of some of its shortcomings. With the basic goal I’m seeking to address these issues and make it a much more fun game to play and the art even more evocative.
OK if we get the basic funding goal I’m planning the following stretch goals.
Stretch Goal 1: More Fiends (£4500) FUNDED!
David last year bashed out thirty or so sketches of monsters that are just begging to be finished and made into C&T fiends. The Compendium of Fiends chapter was one of my favorite sections of the original book to write, so I’m really hoping this funds.
Stretch Goal 2: The Haunted Lands (£5000) FUNDED!
Visit the mysterious village of Wimble on the edge of the Haunted Lands, then explore this small section of Weirdlands, inhabited by scheming witches, undead horrors and other sinister fiends best left alone. What is the secret of Windy Mildark’s Windmill? What happens if you touch the Black Stone Monolith that stands on the edge of Wimble? Are those White Pyramids I can see in the distance and who was Ef and why does he get a statue? All this awaits you in this example Weirdlands crawl.
If we reach this stretch goal I will write up this short Weirdlands adventure to show how you can run adventures beyond the crypt.
Stretch Goal 3: Port Blackmire (£5500) FUNDED!
“This is an ancient and vile city, ruled by the Pirate King Xanos. Corruption is rife, murder is common, and only Xanos’ blood chilling pacts with Demons keep the numerous gangs under his total control. It is surrounded by “The Black Mire”. This vast and festering swamp is choked with the ruins of a civilisation that predates even that of Myrindor. It is said the gods choked it with its own bile for some slight against them. It is home to pirates and gangs of cutthroats, who use the swamps to mount raids against the rest of the Free Territories.”
Every Swords and Sorcery setting needs a city, where adventurers can rest easy and squander their ill begotten gains between adventures, or perhaps get dragged into unexpected capers in their home town. If we reach this goal, I will detail and map a living city that can be used for city based adventures and as somewhere for the adventurers to call home.
Stretch Goal 4 Scourges of a Dying World
Siligra Queen of the Serpent People, Krong King of the Battle Apes, Zilon the Terrible (who marches on his Hands), Ternon the Blind and Iosk the Impenetrable...currently these names are but part of a list of twenty that are named as potential Nemeses for the player characters in Appendix N of the rulebook. If this goal funds I will give them full write ups in their own chapter.
Stretch Goal 5 Secrets of the Serpent People (£6500) FUNDED!
In my own explorations of Zarth the Serpent People crop up again and again. If this stretch goal funds I’ll reveal what I’ve discovered about their history, culture and dark magic, making them a fully fleshed out enemy race.
I’ve left the best for last for those of you who’ve been wondering about extra character classes.
The first two expand the ‘core’ set of Swords & Sorcery classes.
Stretch Goal 6 Disciple (£7000)
They come from remote inaccessible Monasteries who have preserved the ancient wisdom of Zarth. Trained in long forgotten ways of hand to hand combat and weapons martial arts, they also have access for good or ill to the mystic powers that their sanctuaries have preserved. This is a Crypts and Things take on the classic Monk Class, with Black, White, and Grey Disciplines for them to study and use in play.
Stretch Goal 7 Elementalist (£7500) FUNDED!
A member of the Priesthood of The Four Cities, who is out traveling in the world, or one of Myrindor’s disposed class of magi who used to command the Elemental Lords, this class has tremendous power over the Elements. An alternative magic-using class for players who want a straightforward flavoursome approach to magic, without the risks of Sorcery.
The next three classes are Race-as-Class, where the non-humans of Zarth get a look in.
Stretch Goal 8 Lizard People (£8000) FUNDED!
A noble ancient Elder Race of Zarth, even older than the Serpent People (who are said to be a corruption of them). They are tough fighters with strange mystic powers that come from the very planet itself.
Stretch Goal 9 Beast Hybrid (£8500)
The product of foul Serpent man magic, these hybrids either embrace their savage bestial side or try to avoid it. In their Beast form they have senses, toughness and abilities far superior than their Human form.
Stretch Goal 10 Serpent Noble (£9000)
An ancient race who worship the Great Snake, now greatly reduced in numbers they hide in the shadows or lurk at the edges of society masked in Illusions. Sorcerers by nature, they start only with access to Black Magic that enslaves and humiliates others, but can develop down their own path towards freedom or the blackest pits of the Abyss.
Finally it was a big tradition in British Fantasy Roleplaying games and Game books of the 80s to mix the dark mysterious and bloody classes of the orient with more standard Swords & Sorcery fare.
Stretch Goal 11 Samurai (£9500)
They come from the Far East, the Land of the Lotus, explorers on the Continent of Terror. Lightly armoured and highly proficient in the use of their steel swords, their strange set of personal rules they call ‘Honour’ protects them from the corruption of the Continent of Terror.
Stretch Goal 12 Ninja (£10000)
The secret clans have made their way on the exploration fleet from the Lands of the Lotus. With them they bring the art of Ninjutsu and do battle with the horrors of the shadows. The Ninja need little introduction, and if we reach this they will be available to play in your game.
All backers will get an early access to a Beta version in pdf as soon as they sign up. This is ready now, so you can get playing Crypts and Things as soon as the campaign ends. Its not the complete finished article. It is not art complete and does not have expanded content in it.
As soon as the final pdf is ready it will be sent to all backers.
Backers who pledge for POD print versions (Adventurer, Mercenary, Sorcerer, Convention Champion and Convention Hero) will get access to a Print on Demand (POD) copy at cost via DriveThruRpg.com.
What this means is when the print version of the book is ready, I will send you an voucher via email to an at cost version on DriveThruRpg.com. You will then pay the production cost and shipping to your home as part of your order with DriveThruRpg.com. Estimated costs are listed on the right hand side under the backer level descriptions.
This means 100% of the backer money goes towards the project, instead of covering unexpected increased shipping or production costs when the project is finally finished.
Conquerors and Merchants will be sent the books directly from me when they are ready.
To help fund the book the following add-ons are available to purchase. Please add the price of the Add-on when you make your pledge. I will ask you which Add-On's you've purchased when I send you the Backer's Survey. For the adventures I'll also ask you to indicate whether you want a pdf or an at cost POD print version with Free Pdf at the same time.
Extra Rulebooks (£5 each)If you are already a backer at the print reward level, you can pick up to five extra copies of the rulebook of the same type as your reward level (i.e Adventurers get soft covers and Mercenaries get hardcovers). If you are Mercenary who only wants soft covers please mention this in your response to the Backer's Survey.
Blood of the Dragons (£3) by Newt Newport
“Under a land shrouded in volcanic ash punctuated by rocky spires that tear at the sky they say the Dragons sleep. Tyanos the Black, Trickster god of the long dead Hu-pi people stole their blood and bottled it for his insane delight. As drink of the gods it confers immortality to mortal man, but at what terrible price?
In fact the very quest for this elixir is insane. A trip into a harsh and unforgiving land of the Spires, a poor and bandit ridden weird land, inhabited by the likes of Black Joop, Nigus the Headless and the Mother of Hydra. Names that should send a shiver down your spine. So pick up your sword, down the last of your ale to steady any nerves and stride off towards a great adventure into the Ash Plains.”
This adventure was the first release for the game for 1st -3rd level characters.Ideal for beginning Games Masters and Players to familiarise themselves with the Game and Setting.
Tombs of Necromancers by Paul Mitchener (£3)
“The ruins of the Unknown City stand at the edge of the Death Wind Steppe, surrounded by the foothills of the Wolf Head Mountains. They are a monument to a once mighty city. Few now know the city‘s history, and how it fell. The city‘s old name, Tetronis, now belongs to a village of simple fisherfolk standing amongst the ruins.
The force behind both the old city‘s greatness and its destruction was the god Orlusz.”
This adventure for character's levels 6th-8th is a journey through the frozen Barbaric North of Zarth.
Life and Death by Newt Newport (£6)
This 100 page setting/adventure book was originally written for OpenQuest. It is a mini-epic over four adventures featuring the grand scheme of a rogue group of Necromancers and their Undead allies, with the very fate of the world up for grabs.
NEW! The Dark Path by Newt Newport (£5)
The Sequel to the Blood of the Dragon, this module takes the characters into the Stinking Marsh, a twisted weird land where nature has been befouled by powerful magic in ancient times. As well as a quick guide to the lands of the Stinking Marsh and its inhabitants, the module contains two adventures. The Dark Path itself and Terror At Black Rock.
NEW! Fort Boneguard by Newt Newport (£5)
Moving northwards from the Stinking Marsh the adventurers arrive in the bleak and devastated Bonefields, the site of an ancient holocaust where an entire civilisation was destroyed by magical warfare. Unbelievably there is a small outpost , the Fort Boneguard of the title, hanging on despite constant attacks from the Bonefield’s undead inhabitants. This is a sandbox adventure, which suggests lots of plots and events but leaves the direction of play completely up to the players.
Note you can get all the above adventure add-ons, as pdfs + at cost POD print, with a POD at cost hardcover, at a modest discount by pledging at the Sorcerer reward level of £35.
Annotated Rulebook Pdf (£5) A Pdf of the rule book - commented on by myself. Learn where I drew inspiration from, why things are the way they are and some of the Easter eggs I placed in the book. Please note this a campaign exclusive I will not be offering this after the campaing closes.
Convention Scenario Book: The Tournaments of Madness and Death (£5)
This scenario book will contain some of the convention scenarios that I’ve run over the years. It will contain two adventures The Furnace & Old Steel Ruins and an article on how I prepare and run Convention demo’s which are a more focused and pacer affair than your typical campaign home game. Note this is included in the Convention Champion, Convention Hero and Conquerer backer rewards BUT NOT the Sorcerer Level.
Also the Conqueror reward level (£100) includes all above six adventures as free pdfs and print copies which are sent directly to you with no extra cost as well as the Annotated Book Pdf. NOTE: The description on the left does not include the The Dark Path and Fort Boneguard or Tournament of Madness and Death or the Annotated Book Pdf since they were added after the campaign began and Kickstarter does not allow changes to descriptions after people have pledged.

Previews on Sorcerer Under the Mountain
I've run a series of Previews on my own blog, usually on a Friday hence the title Fiendish Friday.
I'll be adding more as the campaign goes on. Also there are some earlier entries that give an indication of what the game's default setting Zarth is like.

Risks and challenges
I've previously successfully funded and shipped three Crowdfunded projects (Crypts and Things, and OpenQuest 2 on IndieGoGo.com , River of Heaven here on Kickstarter).
I've learnt lessons from all three, which is why this campaign is focusing on the main rule book (which is already written), with short focused stretch goals which are already being written. I've also allowed a good six months plus for completion of the art and additional text, and for the production of the book itself.
After the Kickstarter ends I will be in touch at least once a month with Updates to communicate how the project is coming along.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
