About this project
What is "The Beginning Farmer"?
"The Beginning Farmer" began in 2006 as a blog to chronicle the farming dreams and journey of Ethan Book. Over the years there have been well over 800 blog posts ranging from research, ideas, stories about life on the farm, and of course plenty of hard lessons learned. (You can read a couple popular posts from the archive here and here.) As the farm has grown so has the desire to share the journey, experiences, and lessons from the farm. In 2013 that desire led to the creation of "The Beginning Farmer Show" which is a popular weekly podcast that explores the journey in depth and provides content for beginning farmers, experienced farmers, and people that just love farmers!
Head over to TheBeginningFarmer.com where you can find past episodes and blog posts!
After eight years of blogging, podcasting, and beginning a farm, it has become clear that one of the things we love most is sharing the journey and encouraging others in their farming dreams! That is why we are so excited about this next chapter of "The Beginning Farmer" ...
The Beginning Farmer Show Videos
Let's just be completely honest. Some "Hard Lessons Learned" just come across better in video. Our goal is to launch "The Beginning Farmer Show Videos" in March or April, 2015. Here are some details ...
- What will they look like? Do you love the hard lessons learned and the episodes about how we do things on Crooked Gap Farm? The videos will be like that, but now you will be able to see what I'm talking about!
- What about the content? How-to videos from around the farm, listener/viewer questions, interviews with other farmers, and plenty of hard lessons learned will be featured in the videos.
- Where will the videos be? You'll be able to find the videos directly on The Beginning Farmer Website or on YouTube.
- How often will new videos be released? There will be a new video available every other week.
- Will the videos be long? I'm shooting for videos between 5 and 10 minutes ... short, sweet, and to The Beginning Farmer point.
- How professional will they be? Just like everything on a beginning farm, they will get better as time goes on. But thankfully because of the awesome listeners, I already have support when it comes to putting together the best system and videos with the budget I will have.
Don't worry, "The Beginning Farmer Show" podcast isn't going anywhere. This will just be another way to share the journey and the hard lessons learned along the way.
WE HIT OUR FIRST GOAL ... HELP US GET TO STRETCH GOAL #1 AND AN AWESOME PORK COOKING VIDEO!
This is Exactly What I'm Looking For! How Can I Help?
Plain and simple, I need your help. I have the equipment to record the video and the audio, there are plenty ideas bouncing around to last years, and I'm even lucky enough to have "video pro's" in the family! But, what I don't have is the computer needed to put it all together and make it possible for your to see the videos.
This is where you come in: You can help support "The Beginning Farmer Show Videos" by pledging money towards the goal, but we only get that money if we reach our $1,200 goal. To be completely blunt, if we don't meet the goal, I'm not sure if there will be any "Hard Lesson Learned Videos".
Why Videos? Why Now?
One thing I have learned on this eight year journey of beginning a farm is that I can't do it on my own, and there are a lot of things along the way that would have been nice to know about before I tried them and failed! First of all, it's my hope that the videos will be an encouragement to other beginning farmers and lovers of the small-scale farm movement. And secondly, hopefully viewers will be able to learn from my hard lessons so they don't have to repeat them on their own farms!
There is something in this for you (on top of a new video every other week)! I am excited beyond all excitement about the possibility of making these videos for The Beginning Farmer community, but I'm going to need your help. If you are awesome enough to back this project I want to say, "Thank you!" by sending you some cool TBF stuff!
Here are the rewards being offered in various combinations at the different pledge levels, given if the project is fully funded:
- Personal Thank You on "The Beginning Farmer Show" Podcast! (Every Level)
You'll receive a personal thank you on "The Beginning Farmer Show" podcast. Of course, you will also receive my deepest thanks for your support!
- TBF Show Postcard ($10, $20, $35, $50, $65, $85 $100, $150, $200)
I'm serious about saying, "Thank you!" because you are awesome! With that in mind, I'm having special TBF Show postcards made, and I am going to send you one at all the levels with a personal thank you message from me.
- TBF Show Sticker ($20, $35, $50, $65, $85 $100, $150, $200)
Deep down below my "farmer exterior" I'm a rock star so this limited edition TBF Show sticker is a reward that I'm really excited about. My good friend Lindsie made this great Early American Folk Art logo, and I know this sticker will look great on your amp, guitar case, or even your tractor!
- CGF Farmcrafted Soap ($35, $50, $65, $85 $100, $150, $200)
Crooked Gap Farmcrafted Soap is handmade by my wife here on our farm in small batches stirred by hand. Our soap uses as many ingredients as possible that are produced on our farm, gathered from local sources, or commonly found available on a farm. You will receive one of our most popular bars to leave your skin feeling surprisingly soft and moisturized.
- Exclusive TBF Show T-Shirt ($50, $65, $85 $100, $150, $200, $300, $500)
This is the t-shirt that all the farmers (and their friends) will want to wear to town! Super soft and a super cool logo. On top of that, if you get one of these shirts you will be one of a very select group of people in the whole wide world that has a limited edition "The Beginning Farmer Show" shirt. (You'll receive a backer survey to pick your shirt size.)
- Exclusive TBF Show Long Sleeve T-Shirt ($65 Level Only or $15 Extra to Swap in Any T-Shirt Level)
Let's face it, sometimes it gets cold outside and you need a shirt with some sleeves ... or you just love to rock the old school baseball look! Super soft and a super cool logo. This shirt will really set you apart, because it is only available at the $65 level or with a $15 extra t-shirt swap. (you'll receive a backer survey to pick your shirt size)
- Produce/Sponsor a Podcast Episode ($85)
If you have ever wished you could tell me what to say, this is your chance. Not only will you be announced as the sponsor of the episode, but you will also have your hand in selecting the topics for an entire podcast episode. If you want to hear about pigs ... I'll talk about pigs. If you want to know my keys to marketing ... I'll talk about marketing. If you want to know about my hardest lessons learned ... I'll even share that. You'll get to plan the show!
- One hour 1-on-1 Beginning Farmer Chat ($125)
Jump on Skype or the phone with me, and let's talk about farming. This is your chance to pick my brain about the beginning farming choices I've made, the mistakes that happen weekly on the farm, or brainstorm about what cool things are happening and can happen on your own farm. We'll have one hour of pure fun!
- Produce/Sponsor a Video Episode ($150)
If there is something you have heard me talking about all the time on the podcast, but you just can't picture how it works, here is your chance. You'll be thanked and featured as the sponsor at the beginning of the video, and then I'll dig deep ON VIDEO into your beginning farmer topic of choice. If you've always wanted to see what the hog loading process is like at Crooked Gap Farm (or something else), then this is your chance!
- Two hours 1-on-1 Beginning Farmer Chat ($225)
This reward is the same as the one hour 1-on-1 chat, but it is twice as nice because it is twice as long. We can meet on Skype or by phone for 2 hours in one fell swoop or even break it up over a couple of different times if you'd like.
- A day on the farm for 2 with a tour and food ($325)
Do you live close enough to stop by the farm, or do you want to make the trip (lodging and travel expenses not included)? Now you and a friend can spend the day seeing a beginning farmer in person. Ask as many questions as you'd like, and see as much of the farm as you'd like. It gets better though, because there will also be Crooked Gap Farm home cooked food involved in the visit for you and your guest.
- The Super Backer Combo Pack ($325)
Let's say you don't live close enough to the farm to make it out for a day, but you still want the experience. Well, the "Super Backer Combo Pack" is perfect for you then. You'll receive the combo pack, the t-shirt, and on top of that we can have twelve 30 minute Skype or phone chats over the course of the year to talk farming. If there is something particular you want to see on the farm, I'll even make a video for you!
- A day on the farm for 4 with a tour and food ($525)
This is the same as the $325 level, except for $525 you and three of your friends or family can come to the farm for tours, questions, and food!
- The Super-Duper Backer Combo Pack ($525)
This is the same as the "Super Backer Combo Pack", but you'll receive twice as many 30 minute Skype or phone calls for a total of 24! Of course, I will be eternally grateful as well.
Shipping :: At this time we can only ship within the US and Canada.
Where is Your Money Going?
I'm trying to keep this as bare bones and stripped down as possible because I really do want to get the videos out there for all beginning farmers. With that in mind, $1,200 is the minimum amount for equipment needed to put out a video that will be similar to the quality you've come to expect on the podcast.
- $750 - For the video editing computer
- $350 - Reward fulfillment for the awesome backers (including shipping costs and other things that pop up)
- Kickstarter's cut, because they are letting us use their website!
What Happens if More Pledges Come In?
Any money received above $1,200 will go directly into creating even better videos to serve The Beginning Farmer Community! As more funds become available, there will be more opportunities for "The Beginning Farmer Videos" to hit the road and share stories from other farms, the quality will increase, and there will even be the possibility of videos being released more frequently. In short, if the goal is met - don't stop pledging!
Risks and challenges
If I have learned one thing on the farm it is that things don't always work out as you picture them in your mind. Adding video content to the website and workflow will bring new challenges, but with the help of great supporters I know it come along swimmingly!
Of course the plan is to launch in March or April of 2015, but there is always the possibility of a delay because equipment issues.
Thankfully there are friends and family that have already offered their help if any issues do arise the creation of the videos.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
