About

'The Outsiders of The Outsiders': A feature length documentary about the obviated bisexual community.

Ever since the 1970’s, there has been a sexual revolution for those within the GLBT Community fighting for equal rights in America. Jumping to present day, these individuals are still fighting for equal rights, but are making a strong headway with several US states legalizing gay marriage and international support such as France and New Zealand. However, all is not completely fair for one niche of the homosexual community; Bisexuals. Bisexuals are a key member of the GLBT movement fighting for the same rights as their gay and lesbian supporters, but for some reason, are expelled from this community.

In both the homosexual and heterosexual societies, bisexuals are considered a taboo sexuality because of their fluid ability to belong in both sexual groups. This has lead to a lot of controversy on whether or not bisexuality even exists based on common viewpoint that bisexuality is either “just a phase” or “gays in waiting”. Evidence for these viewpoints can be seen everywhere in society and even in the media being found in television shows like “Girls” and “Glee” as well as in films such as “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World”. But bisexuals are not alone in the media with well known celebrities coming out as bisexual; Billie Joe Armstrong, Evan Rachel Wood, and even David Bowie. But even with this strong group of influential people, there is no role model for bisexuals and there is no one to be the face for the bisexual community in comparison to the homosexual community who has George Takei, Ellen Degeneres, and Sir Ian McKellen.

On top of this, Bisexuals are also met with different stigmas within the dating community. Instead of doubling their potential partners as one would think, being Bisexual actually diminishes their possible partners because of the stereotype of promiscuity and the idea that bisexuals are more likely to cheat because of their wider range of partners.

The basis for this documentary is simply to get to the bottom of these social views and why they exist for both male and female bisexuals. My hypothesis for this social expulsion is based around the idea that Bisexuals should theoretically exist in both societies but this scares people who are attached to their own binaries. Because of this, bisexuals are obviated.

Production has officially wrapped in Bloomington, Indiana (home of the Kinsey Institute) and we are starting production in New York this summer. That's where you come in. We need funds to finish the project and make it look the best it can possibly be. For the money you donate, there are many incentives so no one walks away empty handed ranging from thank you notes to even being a part of the documentary. With your help, we can shed light on the social stigma on bisexuals and bring a voice to a large community of Americans, trying to find their's.

Risks and challenges

In terms of risks and challenges, the most difficult part of our production is finding the right people to interview. Finding experts, journalists, authors, and even members of the GLBT community to be interviewed for the film could cause some delays due to busy schedules. However, we are working on the film between now and the middle of October so this risk is not a major concern. Also, being in New York, we should have a plethora of subjects to meet with and gain their opinions and knowledge for the documentary.
