About this project
I'm making my first solo harpsichord recording. Its a project I've been working toward for years and was a big part of my recent DMA dissertation at the University of Maryland. The pieces are all my own compositions - transcriptions and arrangements of pieces by a variety of Baroque composers. I've spent a lot of time writing and revising these pieces, and I'm proud of the results. I'm also happy to be offering many new harpsichord works that have never been recorded.
The pieces are all my own transcriptions of the following works:
- Bach's first cello suite
- La Descente d'Orphee aux Enfers - an opera by Marc-Antoine Charpentier
- Ottoboni's Contest - an imaginary musical account of a competition between G.F. Handel and Domenico Scarlatti, based on Handel's Harmonious Blacksmith Variations
- Several violin pieces by Nicola Matteis - [sound sample] [score sample]
- A three movement guitar sonata by Santiago de Murcia
- Marizapolas - a beautiful set of variations by Murcia
I have a great team to make this recording. The producers are Elena Tsai, my wife and fellow harpsichordist, and Justin Godoy, recorder player and co-director of my chamber ensemble, Harmonious Blacksmith. Ed Kelly is engineering and editing the recording, and Barbara Wolf is the harpsichord tuner and technician.
The CD will be recorded at Spencerville Seventh Day Adventist Church, where I recorded a chamber music CD several years ago. I'll be using two harpsichords for the recording: my own Franco-Flemish instrument by William Dowd and an Italian instrument by Thomas and Barbara Wolf, thanks to the generosity of Thomas MacCracken who owns the instrument.
It will take three days to do the initial recording. Then, approx. two months to do the editing and mastering, and finally another two weeks for the CDs to be manufactured. The CD will be finished before Christmas 2011.
The budget for this project is $6,500. $2,000 is for the manufacturing of the CDs, and the remainder is to pay the team of producers, engineer and tuner. The use of the church is in exchange for a performance on their 2012-2013 concert series.
