A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
It's a very simple design, with each Vinci Ring consisting of two screw machined parts that we then manually press around fifty-eight bearing balls.
We believe in its simplicity and elegance - but won't compromise on the ring's functionality and smooth action. That's why we assemble them by hand, with high quality materials, to ensure that each and every one spins as it should.
We decided to use Kickstarter in an effort to keep the prices as low as possible, since the cost of each part goes down with higher quantities.
Once the project is successful, we will have a couple of months to manufacture and assemble all the rings (up to 2000 plus!) and ship them out to our backers!
Designed in 2013, the Vinci Ring has existed in its current iteration since the fall of 2014 when it served as my engagement ring! I have carried that gold ring, or the original brass version, within reach, every day for years, and people are constantly asking about it, wanting one for themselves!
Since the Vinci Ring's creation, the whole fidget toy craze has exploded and we figured it's as good a time as ever to release what we believe is a high quality, elegant, timeless alternative to much of what can be found out there.
Whether you're a nail biter, a fidgeter, quitting smoking, if you feel awkward without a drink in your hand, or are simply full of nervous energy, the Vinci Ring is abeautiful, subtle tool that you can wear around your neck, keep on your keychain, or even in your pocket - with you wherever you go.
High Quality Materials
Brass : Develops a lovely patina over time but still spins perfectly (it's the brass one that fell out of the tree in the video and it's no worse for wear). *Brass Vinci Rings come with glass bearings or black ceramic at the next level reward tier.
Titanium : Extremely durable, corrosion resistant and techy. *Titanium Vinci Rings come with choice of black or white ceramic bearings depending on the reward tier.
Gold (choice of Yellow, Rose or White) : Luxury, will never tarnish. Softer than the other materials, but any dents will self-repair with more use so it will continue to spin nicely over the years. *Gold Vinci Rings come with choice of white or black ceramic bearings and also a Custom Engraving on the inside of the ring.
The Vinci Ring is the product of a design evolution with the goal of creating the most simple, tasteful, high quality spinner possible. The metal ring components are as thin as can be CNC machined, giving the spinner a very compact feel between your fingers, while the dense metal allows the outer ring to spin as long as possible. The ball bearings are extremely durable and precise, allowing the ring to spin longer and last a lifetime of fidgeting.
The special wooden Vinci holder - that we are giving out to backers in the first week - is a great addition that lets your spin the ring with the entire weight of your keys behind it, which is an entirely different and enjoyable experience!
We look forward to coming up with other fun, simple products in the future.
The more you use it, the better it spins. After weeks of disuse, it may not spin as well as you remember but after a bit of play, it'll be back in business.
The action also changes depending on air pressure, humidity, temperature - as these factors contribute to the expansion and contraction of the materials and their friction. You get used to these changes and the behaviour of your ring the longer you carry it around. You begin to really appreciate and understand your Vinci Ring's personality.
The Vinci Ring is an exposed system, which displays the attractive, performance bearings within. This means sometimes debris can get inside. But it is also very easy to clean. If it happens to get gummed up, just run it under some warm soapy water and spin it. Once it dries, it'll spin great again.

Risks and challenges
1. This is our first time attempting large scale production - so one challenge will be finding the most efficient way to assemble the rings while maintaining high standards.
2. Ensuring that our manufacturer precisely machines the components to drawing specs. We are making sure to do sample test runs with various manufacturers before we proceed with the large order, so we don't spend all our money on components that don't fit together correctly.
3. Making sure we get product out in time for the holiday season! This includes a thorough understanding of shipping times.
