THE PROJECT IS FULLY FUNDED!! AHHHHHHH!!!!!
Because you all have been so amazing and pledged like crazy, I figured we should set a stretch goal of $1,500! I never imagined I would actually get to $1,000, but now that I have (because of YOUR generosity), $1,500 seems super doable!
I plan to use the additional funds to continue to market the book, help further offset publishing and promoting expenses, and get me started on book 2!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! Let's keep it going!!
Somewhere, buried deep underground, lies an ancient Secret…
When archaeology professor Kayla Harrington heads to Belize for the summer, she discovers a collection of Mayan hieroglyphs detailing stories of a powerful Secret. But when her colleague, Grady McGready, joins in the search, she begins to realize that there’s more to this secret—and to him—than she thought.
But secrets don’t stay hidden by chance…
As Kayla and Grady get closer to uncovering the Secret—and the power it promises—they, along with grad students Mandy and Justin, are thrust into the hands of a ruthless Clan determined to prevent the Secret from being released at all costs. Through deadly rainforests, raging rivers, and hidden passageways, the four embark on a journey to bring to light a Secret that has been hidden from the world for far too long.
Hi! I'm Melissa Frey and I'm the debut author of The Secret of the Codex.
My journey in writing this book really began 10 years ago...
I was a young girl who had a dream to write a book. I wrote a book in high school — a tiny novella, really — that was cringe-worthy, but it inspired my love for writing.
I had no clue where to start. I wrote one page in Microsoft Word in the summer of 2008, but then I couldn't figure out where I wanted to go with it. So I sat on it for almost a year.
Then, in April of 2009, I read the Twilight series. Yes, love it or hate it (I personally love it), the series inspired many people, myself included! One night, after having read some of the series (and having watched the first movie!), I had a dream about my previously superpower-free book where I saw one of my characters showing off their superpowers. And a brand-new vision was born!
I wrote fervently then, and it took me until May 2010 to finish the first draft. It was so fun, and I learned SO MUCH. Funny story — I read a writing book about halfway through writing my first draft, and there was a marked difference between the first and second halves of my book. My writing improved that drastically!
Over the next 7 years, through many long (and sometimes painful — one of the drafts I dubbed "The Cut") edits, I FINALLY finished. I'd been through so much as I wrote and edited the book (some of it was written while I lived overseas!), including the end of a relationship, the start of a new one (and a wedding!), and probably 18,000 moves. (Okay, maybe more like 7, but sometimes it feels like 18,000.)
So after all that time, earlier this year I FINALLY decided that the time was now. No matter what I needed to do to get it done, I determined that my book would be published and out in the world for everyone to read by the end of 2018. I debated for a long time whether to publish traditionally or to self-publish, but, in the end, I decided that I didn't want to wait any longer and that self-publishing was right for me right now.
Would you like to see the book cover for The Secret of the Codex? I LOVE it!
My goal is to raise at least $1,000 with this Kickstarter campaign. I have already spent some of that out of my own pocket and have yet to order bonus incentives and begin marketing the book. If I am able to raise more than $1,000 I will use those funds to help offset my costs, market this book, and help me get a jumpstart on book 2 of The Codex Series (which is well underway — I have over 80,000 words so far!!)
Here's a breakdown of some costs already spent:
- ISBNs (that official-looking barcode has a rather pricey number attached to it) that make it possible for the book to be sold in stores and online ($300)
- Interior Design Template ($80)
- Book Cover Design ($100)
- Book Launch Courses ($180)
Here are some expected future costs:
- Bookish Swag, including Lightning Necklaces ($400)
- Printed Copies of Books ($400)
- Shipping Costs ($150)
Thank you in advance for your support. This book really is a dream come true and I can't wait for all of you to read it!
Risks and challenges
The only challenge I may have is getting all the physical books and bonuses shipped and in your hands by the actual release date. That's my goal, but it could potentially be early September before you actually receive your bonuses.
I will do my best to get them to you as quickly as possible!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
