Colour Chess + Lure : A colourful new dimension of strategy

£3,807

Colour Chess and Lure are played on the same board, but with different pieces and win conditions. They are separate games, but you can also combine them. More on that later...

On each turn, you make two moves - the first of your moves must be to the same colour that your opponent last moved to. This allows you a level of direct influence over what they do, and creates some sneaky new tactics and manoeuvres.

*To clarify, please note, the "no extra postage charge" for the double pack and 5 pack means that you pay the same £4 postage as if you had ordered just one pack.

Easy to Learn

If you can already play chess, Colour Chess will take you 5 minutes to learn the new colour-based movement and turn structure. It might take a game or two to get used to it though, particularly the double threat situations.

If you want something a bit lighter, Lure can be setup to suit any complexity level from young kids through to strategist.

All of the games are 'perfect information' games - there is zero luck involved and Colour Chess still 'feels' like playing chess.

The diagram below shows some of the different games you can play!

Endless Variety + Classic Chess Variants

Lure pieces can be added to Colour Chess and vice versa, in any number of combinations.

The tiled board can be randomised, patterned or competitively setup to suit your playing preference.

As well as playing Colour Chess + Lure, the flippable player pieces and game tiles allow for a whole host of variations for Classic Chess as well.

Each coloured tile has brown or cream on the back, so you can create normal boards but with special condition tiles like below (where pieces can't stop on red tiles), or zone off areas of the board for things like 4 player Chess.

You can read more about these options in this update

Try the game out now - Free Print'n'Play

We're quite happy for you to try out the game and see if it's something you enjoy before pledging. Just do the following:

- Print out an example board seutp: http://www.dogearedgames.com/colour-chess-pnp-boards/

- Play on the board with your own chess pieces / counters (you can use them in place of Lure pieces too)

- Follow through the guides below to learn how to play!

 IN THE BOX

We will be getting the game manufactured by Trefl in Europe; I was incredibly impressed by the quality of their samples and they have years of experience in printing games and puzzles.

SETUP

A fully modular board of tiles, held together with a jigsaw frame, allows you to create any layout you want and means that every game plays differently. With two of you placing the tiles, you’ll be ready and playing in a couple of minutes (unless you’re busy making pretty patterns!)

Depending on how you want to play, you can either fill in the tiles randomly, as a pattern, or competitively (where you alternately place a tile working from an edge in, adapting to your opponent's placement and thinking about potential movements before the game has even started). Each method gives a different feel to the match.

Lure

Lure is a game of blocking, manipulation and capture that can be played with a different combination of pieces to change up the strategy.

You can instantly win by capturing the opponent's king, but you can also win by progressing your king to the other side of the board, or by generating points from capturing and progressing non-king pieces.

Lure pieces move to the chosen colour, but unlike Chess pieces they can move in a fluid motion to any connected adjacent tile of that colour. They also move in both parts of a player's turn if they can.

Swords are the only pieces that can capture, while Shields prevent your adjacent pieces (apart from the king) from being captured.

At its simplest, Lure can be played with just a King and a Sword each, or you can play with more pieces to increase the complexity.

 Colour Chess

Colour Chess plays the same as classic Chess, but movement is dictated by the colour of the tile that your pieces move to. Evaluating the board and the available colour moves, for yourself and your opponent, is necessary to play well.

Each player's turn is broken down into two parts - on the first part of the turn, they must move a piece onto the colour that their opponent just moved onto. On the second part of the turn they move again, but with a different piece and onto any colour apart from the one just moved to.

In Colour Chess, this means that you will be moving two pieces every time you take a turn, allowing you to create (or escape!) double threats.

Note...

Unlike Lure, in Colour Chess pieces cannot move twice in a turn, so every piece that moves in the first half of your turn is locked for the remainder of your go.

Forcing moves and locking pieces is key to achieving victory.

The two part turn structure and forced moves allow for some additional tactical considerations not found in classic Chess, as shown in the diagram below.

As two pieces move every turn, you are allowed to stay in or move into check during your turn and the game is only over once a King is actually captured.

Note: Castling is allowed - it functions as normal except you can move into and through check. It is triggered by the colour the King moves to when it moves towards the Rook. En Passant also holds true and is valid from whenever the Pawn is moved forward two spaces, until the end of the next player's turn.

Using your own Pieces

If you'd rather use your own solid pieces to play Colour Chess, then please do! The flippable pieces are more necessary for Swarm Colour Chess (see below!)

Swarm Colour Chess

The rules are identical to Colour Chess, except that instead of just moving one piece to the given colour, you must move EVERY piece of yours that can move. You can move them in any order, which has a massive impact on your available options.

This is where flippable player pieces are essential, as they allow you to track which pieces have moved so far during your turn.

At first sight this is a very chaotic game, but it settles down quickly into a highly controllable match.

The focus of the game shifts to colour-locking pieces in the first half of your opponent's turn, to prevent them from retaliating.

VIDEO

Colour Chess + Lure

You can combine the pieces from either game into the other, for example you could add Rooks into a Lure game to see what happens when you have long-range moving pieces, or you can add Lure pieces into Colour Chess, so that you have Shields that prevent your other pieces from being captured.

Once you start doing this you will find it's helpful to have a different sized board, otherwise you can end up with too cramped or too sparse a game setup.

The modular nature of the jigsaw frame allows you to adjust the board to suit. Take a look below at some of the options, including some experimental board designs.

Variation: Sequence Colour Chess

Here, each player takes just one movement on their turn, moving the piece that is ON the current colour, rather than TO the current colour.

The colours cycle through, as per the coloured circles at the board edge. So White would move a piece that is on a red space, then Black would do the same. Then White would move a piece from a blue space etc. If a player can't make a move, they skip their turn.

The simpler turn structure is ideal for kids learning to play Chess, as the reduced options allow them to focus on piece movement and not get overwhelmed by options. With experience you will find the sequenced play allows you to look moves ahead in a completely different way to either Chess or Colour Chess.

Rewards

So as not to discourage our overseas gaming friends, we have decided to subsidise the postage abroad so that every backer pays the same set rate.

*To clarify, please note, the "no extra postage charge" for the double pack and 5 pack means that you pay the same £4 postage as if you had ordered just one pack.

For overseas orders we will be shipping via a fulfilment company that redistributes from within the country, so there should be no additional customs charges for you in the US, EU or Australia.

All pledge levels come with all unlocked stretch goals.

The cost in Euros and Dollars are approximate and are to be used as a guide only; the actual amount you will be charged will vary depending on conversion rates at the time.

Having two packs will allow you to play Bughouse Chess or Double Swarm Colour Chess (see pic below. This is two sets joined together for a massive battlefield! Ignore the gaps in the frame, the prototype didn't have an expandable border):

A set of 5 games, perfect for a club, school, gaming group or retailer.

If you opt to pledge for the full DogEared Games catalogue, as well as Colour Chess + Lure you'll get a copy of Stak Bots plus the two expansions at a bargain price, as well as a download key for the digital Stak Bots - Breakout game for PC/MAC.

Risks and challenges

We have completed two successful Kickstarter tabletop campaigns for the expansion sets for Stak Bots. These were both delivered in full either early or on time.
We have an outstanding project for the Stak Bots live app, due to being let down repeatedly by software developers. This is something we are still in the process of resolving and will continue to do so. It will not affect this project.
There are always possible delays in printing, but we have added in a lot of leeway in the timings to allow for any potential issues, so we are confident we can deliver this in full and on time (and hopefully early).
