Help take the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts to an international audience with a new online presence.

Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA)

Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA)The first museum of its kind, the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA) uses the visual arts as a point of departure to explore contemporary issues impacting the African Diaspora and the world as a whole. After 14 years of serving the Brooklyn community, MoCADA is now expanding its reach to engage an international audience.

MoCADA’s exhibitions aren't just paint on canvas. They are designed to spark discussion, inspire creative thinking, and spur deeper analysis of challenging topics. Through public events such as Soul of Brooklyn Block Parties, Public Exchange Performances, and KIDflix Film Screenings, as well as educational initiatives including Artists-In-Schools and MoCADA Apprentice Program, MoCADA serves a diverse array of individuals throughout Brooklyn.

The first step in achieving this goal is to make all of MoCADA’s current exhibitions and programming available online. In order to do this we must increase our video production capacity and build a new website to make this dynamic content easily accessible. The new MoCADA.org will feature video tours of all exhibitions, archives of artist talks and interviews, adult educational course materials including syllabus and audio recordings of courses, performance videos, live streaming of film festival movies, and more.

As the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts, we believe it is crucial not only that we bring reflections of the African Diaspora to Brooklyn, but also to engage with the African Diaspora across the world by fostering an international dialogue on contemporary global issues. With your help, the MoCADA experience will transcend its physical space, and the borders of Brooklyn--becoming more accessible, more interactive and an online presence felt around the world.

You + MoCADA form a Platform for Greatness.

With your support, MoCADA will upgrade its website into a visually stunning, global portal for contemporary African Diasporan art:

  • Making exhibitions and artist talks accessible globally. With a new platform, all museum programming can be accessed online. So, next time you miss that artist talk you were looking forward to, you can watch it online and even talk with others about the experience.
  • New support staff.  With your support MoCADA will be able to hire a part-time Technical Director to coordinate production of videos, as well as a full-time Marketing Coordinator.
  • A strong archive of stories, art and experiences means African Diasporan stories will never be forgotten. As cultures move and evolve, stories are lost. Today, we can make sure that experiences are preserved for the next generation of Diasporan thought.
  • A new space for adult online education means the learning never stops. Ever wish you could take a class on the intersections of class, consumerism and contemporary art? With this new platform, the sky will be the limit to your learning.
  • Strengthened communities through global dialogue means discussion and exchange are no longer limited by MoCADA's physical space. You can experience MoCADA anywhere in the world!

More About MoCADA

For 14 years, we've worked tirelessly to bring the best in contemporary African Diasporan art to Brooklyn--becoming the destination for inspired contemporary art. Through mixed media exhibitions, well-attended events, monthly artists talks and numerous arts-in-education programming, we have boldly told the stories of the African Diaspora.

MoCADA was founded in 1999 by Laurie Angela Cumbo in a brownstone owned by the Bridge Street AWME Church in the Bedford Stuyvesant community of Brooklyn, New York. The concept of the Museum grew out of Ms. Cumbo’s graduate thesis at New York University, which focused on the feasibility of an African Diaspora Museum contributing to the revitalization of central Brooklyn economically, socially and aesthetically. The Museum began with hard-hitting socially and politically charged exhibitions and public programs focused on contemporary issues impacting people of the African Diaspora that would attract the unlikely museum goer for community debate and exchanges. Twelve years later, the energy of the exhibitions have grown and the community of Brooklyn has recognized MoCADA as its Town Hall institution for the discussion of complex topics that arise in a constantly evolving world.

In 2006, MoCADA relocated to the ground floor of James E. Davis 80 Arts Building within the BAM Cultural District in a space designed by the architectural firm of studiosumo. The larger space gives MoCADA an opportunity to expand its audiences and its programming, which includes the Exhibition and Curatorial Program, The Curatorial Fellowship and Internship Program, the Educational Artist-In-Schools and Guided Tours Program, the KIDflix Film Fest of Bed-Stuy, MoCADA Television, and the Soul of Brooklyn Tourism Initiative. MoCADA is currently working with Rodney Leon Architects PLLC to plan for the future home of MoCADA.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

As with any new initiative there are always risks. One risk in this project is the risk that comes with working with outside contractors. While MoCADA has an in-house video producer on staff, in order to complete the number of productions necessary to archive all exhibitions and events digitally, MoCADA will need to hire additional freelance support. Likewise, MoCADA will also contract outside support to to help design and develop the new website. MoCADA has extensive experience working with consultants and freelancers, however. Additionally, our new full-time marketing coordinator will help to manage all the projects. All projects will be backed by solid contracts that will ensure MoCADA is protected. Therefore, if any issues arise during the process, we are confident that they will not significantly impact the end results or the completion of the project.
