About

Edo, as Tokyo was formally known, had been one of the most unique and prosperous cities in world history. Our team is planning to recreate Edo period Tokyo in virtual reality.

After I established a company producing VR content and began thinking about what I really wanted to create, I arrived at the Virtual Edo Project which would recreate Edo period Tokyo in minute detail. Just until about 200 years ago, the Japanese had a completely different way of life.

I had always loved to let my imagination take me through these times and places of the past while looking at historical documents and pictures. Now, the Virtual Edo Project can make this dream a reality that can be shared with everyone. It is my sincere wish that we can bring this project to completion so that people around the world can experience what Edo was truly like and discover the unique flavors of Japanese culture.

We are picked up from these media below:

---------

Specifically, we are going to recreate the 4 key areas of Nihombashi, the Daimyo Residences, Asakusa and Edo Castle in their entirety using historical records of the period. We aim to create a completely immersive environment in which you can experience Edo in the age of the samurai. We hope that you will share our enthusiasm and give us your support!

In the Virtual Edo Project, we will expand on how much of Edo we will recreate in VR according to the total amount pledged.

During the 250 years of the Edo period, Edo was the political, economic and cultural centre of Japan, and as such expanded to phenomenal proportions, with an approximate population of around 1 million.

In comparison, London had a population of around 850,000, while Paris had around 550,000 people during the same period, and we can appreciate just how huge the city of Edo was for its time.

The Greater Tokyo Area of today is the most populous continuous metropolitan area in the world, but its roots can still be traced back to the golden era of the Edo period. We want to recreate as much of that city of the past as possible to provide the most authentic and immersive environment for our audience.

The merchant district of Nihonbashi developed around Edo Castle which formed the centre of the capital city.

The “zero mile marker” is still located in Nihonbashi, and the entire road network of Japan ultimately converges at Nihonbashi. Countless shops lined this area during the Edo period and it was, for all intents and purposes, the centre of Japan’s economy at the time.

With this expansive and bustling town as a backdrop, some of the most well-known cultural symbols of Japan including Kabuki, Ukiyoe and Sushi emerged. The VR environment will accurately portray the district in detail, giving you a compelling view into the rich and fascinating lives of the Nihonbashi merchant folk during Edo’s heyday.

In the areas spanning across Kasumigaseki and Marunouchi of today, vast and imposing manors owned by the regional samurai lords known as “Daimyos” stood during the Edo period.

After the raging civil wars of the Sengoku period, the Edo period was one of political stability under the Tokugawa dynasty which lasted a remarkable 250 years. Even in this time of peace, the warrior class known as the samurai still dominated politics. By recreating the political centre of Edo, we can achieve an even more in-depth historical representation.

Asakusa prospered during the Edo period largely as a result of the storehouses for rice built in Kuramae. At the time, samurais’ salaries were paid in rice which meant that the merchants of Kuramae who dealt in this essential commodity made enormous profits on a day-to-day basis.

To cater to these wealthy individuals, rows upon rows of theatres, show tents, eateries and tea houses lined the streets while a little further out, the famed pleasure houses of Yoshiwara competed for clientele.

The entire Asakusa area and its surroundings developed as the centre of Edo’s entertainment and nightlife, and its addition to the previous virtual environments would provide a colourful and engaging insight into how people used to enjoy themselves.

The city of Edo would not be complete without Edo Castle, the seat of power of the shogunate. Edo as we know it came into being as a direct result of Ieyasu Tokugawa’s unification of Japan, and the subsequent relocation of the capital to Edo where he built his great castle.

Edo castle was simply immense. In addition to the main tower keep, the castle boasted 4 separate palatial residences, a total of 46 watchtowers and 87 fortified gates. Edo Castle was the undisputed centre of Edo, which in turn was the centre of Japan.

Recreating Edo Castle in a virtual environment would complete the Virtual Edo Project in the truest sense.

-KIDAI SHORAN-

 http://wiki.samurai-archives.com/index.php?title=Kidai_shoran

A rare scroll from the Edo period titled “Kidai Shoran” found in Germany in 1995 depicts the scenery along the road leading from Nihonbashi to Kanda, with detailed illustrations of the townsfolk during the period.

We will use such contemporary pictorial records; blueprints for castles and residential buildings; and existing photographs to create a historically accurate representation of the city of Edo.

In addition, Nobuo Nakamura who is both a historian of the Edo period and a 3DCG artist will oversee the project to ensure that the finished project will be to a standard that could even be used for academic study of the Edo period.

Risks and challenges

Thank you for reading until the end. With countless buildings and houses standing almost wall-to-wall, the teeming city of Tokyo that we know today seems as if it bears little resemblance to the Edo of old.

However, when you look at old maps from the Edo period, you can see that a great number of roads and blocks have remained. Modern Tokyo is undeniably rooted in Edo. Recently, it seems that many more people outside of Japan are becoming interested in Tokyo.

In addition, a large number of people from all over the world are expected to visit for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Tokyo has captivated the imagination of locals and visitors alike. The city was and still is a source of unique cultures with universal appeal. And its origin will always be Edo, as it was formerly called. To know Edo is to truly understand the Japanese identity.

I firmly believe that rediscovering the roots of this incredible city will have great meaning for people living here and abroad alike. With your support, we would like to undertake this project in order to create something that can only be achieved with virtual reality and at the hands of people with a passion for Tokyo’s local history.

We hope that you will join us in our epic journey to Tokyo’s fascinating past. Thank you for your kind support. Shinkyo Oishi CEO, AVATRA INC.
