The concept for Parity started a couple years ago when I was in college and evolved from an initially small idea, to the creation of characters, addition of the script and animation scenes and two proof of concept videos.
Parity brings mutants, survival, strategy, item crafting, compelling story arcs, and 90's nostalgia and crams them into a unique open world, action RPG. Parity is set in San Diego, California in 1996 on the break of an unprecedented disease that is spreading throughout the world causing society to break down and bringing into question the survival of the human race.
Parity game play is all about choice. The relationships you create, leads you follow, and decisions you make all effect your ultimate goal of escaping the city alive. Will you stop to help your neighbor fight against the crazed man attacking her or will you turn away? Will you befriend the strung out girl you met at the concert or ignore her advances? In Parity decisions like this shape your character’s attributes, personality, and skills making a one of a kind game play experience. This dynamic extends to combat where you are able to equip "Skill Buttons" that drastically alter your play experience. Skill Buttons can be upgraded and mixed and matched to achieve different effects. Combine this with your ability to upgrade your weapons and you have a versatile system that allows you to play how you want and experience the world of Parity on your own terms.
The setting for Parity allows for exploration, combining the story arc with free roaming components in a lovingly stylized depiction of the San Diego metro area to create a memorable game play experience. Every building in the quarantine zone is fully explorable from bottom to top with randomized encounters and item drops each time you play. Mid 90's culture is an essential component to creating the Parity environment with attention to detail including the alternative music scene, movies, technology, clothing trends, and overall culture of 1996.
The Parity demo is an early stage to showcase what we want to expand upon and develop. Certain elements of the game are shown in the demo including the San Diego landscape, in game scenes, as well as the character abilities featured as buttons on the backpack of an example of a player character towards the end of the demo. One of the featured skills is the nature ability which will allow for an animal companion to assist your character, creating an additional advantage to completing goals and advancing successfully throughout Parity. Skill buttons add additional game play options, making each person’s game play experience their own.
WHY BACK PARITY: Parity is made by gamers for gamers. The Parity team is committed to giving you the best possible entertainment experience. We exist to serve you and have listened to your complaints in a desire to provide you with a fun, unique and memorable gaming experience. As an indie developer we want to focus less on flashy, upscale graphics and more on action and storytelling. It is our hope that with Parity we can engage you, the gamer, on a more personal level by giving you the tools to express themselves in a game world you will want to explore again and again.
The components of Parity create an original gaming experience that we believe is desired in the video game industry. Gamers are a devoted group of media consumers who tend to support the games they identify with which is why we aim to create Parity for the true video gamer and appreciate all the support that is given.
The Parity team also focuses on helping other independent media industries which is why all music featured in Parity will be performed and recorded by indie musicians with the backing of the Parity team to continue to promote independent artists. Anyone who is interested in helping promote Parity or receive promotion from the Parity team is welcomed to contact us personally.
We are incredibly appreciative of all of those who support us and our dream. We believe accessibility and openness to the gamers and supporters out there is crucial to Parity's success which is why we will keep all of those involved updated on the Parity progress and promptly respond to any questions, so ask away!
GOALS FOR PARITY:
-In order to better explain the goals of Parity, we have broken it down into 3 main simplified stages-
*Stage 1*- This is where the Kickstarter campaign comes in. Our goal for Kickstarter is to raise $5,000 which will fund the Parity project to create a playable demo which can be marketed to investors and publishers. With a playable demo we will be able to show better graphics, maneuverability of the characters, and most importantly actual game play. Assuming our Kickstarter goal is met we plan to have a playable demo completed by the end of Fall 2014 (October-November).
*Stage 2*- After completion of the playable Parity demo we will focus mainly on promotion of the game to investors and to gain a publisher. This goal is achieved not only by good old fashioned person to person contact, email, and marketing but also by entering and attending independent game festivals/conventions such as IGN (Independent Game Festival), IndieCade, and the Game Developers Conference, all of which occur annually. Exposure is essential to getting our project out there and gaining a following to result with publication.
*Stage 3*- Once a publisher is obtained we begin the process of bringing Parity to publication. Securing funding, continued promotion, and completion of the game infrastructure to launch Parity to the public will be the main objectives. Assuming that a publisher is obtained and funding secured, we plan to have Parity completed by Summer 2015 (May-June).
WHERE THE MONEY GOES:
-Salary: 85% of the funds raised on Kickstarter ($4,250.00) will go towards hiring professionals (i.e. animators, programmers, graphic artists) to create a playable demo for Parity. The current Parity team will continue to work without a salary supplied by Kickstarter.
-Promotions: 5% of the Kickstarter funds ($250.00) will help fund promotional items such as t-shirts, posters, flyers, entry fees for independent gaming conventions, or other similar promotional materials. We know that promotions will cost more than $250.00 but will pay any outstanding costs out of our own pocket. This allocation is merely is help with these costs.
-Taxes: 10% of Kickstarter funds ($500.00) will go to taxes and fees due to Kickstarter and Amazon once our goal is reached. Unfortunately, this is something we can’t avoid.
-Any money in access of the $5,000.00 goal will go directly towards the salary portion of our budget to further the advancement of Parity to completion and ultimate release.
Risks and challenges
With any independent project there are obstacles. With Parity our main obstacles will be gaining investors to secure future funding and a publisher in order to bring Parity to completion.
-Gaining Investors: It is never easy to get investors to part with their money, which is why we greatly appreciate all the help offered by those on Kickstarter. The first step to gather further investors is to show not only the playable demo but the interest in Parity. By reaching our Kickstarter goal we can show others that gamers are interested in our project and are waiting it's completion. As soon as the Kickstarter is launched we will begin the process of contacting these investors (i.e. business owners, individual entrepreneurs, and those already in the gaming industry). We will also present the playable Parity demo at independent gaming conventions to showcase the product and obtain contacts for investment. The process of gaining further investment is continuous and will be a constant work in progress until Parity's completion.
-Finding a Publisher: The publisher is the entity that will manufacture, sell, and promote Parity through completion. Finding the right publisher can take time but through creation of the playable demo, promotion of Parity, and exposure at independent gaming conventions, we will be in line to find the perfect publisher for Parity.
-Parity is a dream looking to become a reality. We will continue to invest our own time, money, and energy into the project in order to see it to completion. No matter what obstacles face the Parity team we won't give up and will continue to work hard until Parity is available to gamers everywhere.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
