Autumn of 1986.
A small arcade in a sleepy town receives a new game with an unusual name. Not long after, the kids start... changing. Violence breaks out. People start dying, and the game with the funny name is at the center of it all.
The urban legend of the killer video game Polybius has captivated fans of the mysterious and the macabre since it first appeared online over 15 years ago. Polybius Dreams is more than a simple retelling of that urban legend. It is an unofficial sequel, with a unique spin on the source material. Fans of the urban legend will be interested to see what we do with it here. And if you are not familiar with the story, all the better.
This campaign is to fund Polybius Dreams Volume One, which includes chapters 1 & 2, collected for the first in a single volume. If you’ve backed our previous campaigns, there is no new material here that hasn’t been made available already, except this time we are offering a behind the scenes zine, a parent’s guide to the book, and a cassette tape featuring original music inspired by the comic.
Limited Time / Limited Offer
We are only printing 100-150 books, and that is all. This is a limited run meant to carry Ben through two convention appearances in May. We are only making 50 to 100 copies of the soundtrack as well. 75 books, including 25 with the soundtrack, are being made available for pre-order now, and we may add more if the campaign goes well. Hopefully this campaign will help build up momentum for chapter 3, which we would like to begin funding on later this year.
The Creative Team
Ben Grisanti lives in Buffalo, NY, where he splits his time between writing comics, playing tabletop role playing games, and working full time.
Keith Grachow is a freelance illustrator from Burlington, ON. He has provided artwork for a wide range of indie comics and children's books.
Ester Salguero is a comic book colorist, illustrator, and layout designer based in Spain. She has been working in comics since 2011.
Brandon Pace was a member of the hip hop group Natural Ingredients in Buffalo, NY. He has been involved with Ben’s comic books since the very start.
Polybius Dreams Volume One collects chapters 1 & 2, and includes pinups form Kelly Williams, Jordan Kroeger, Shawn Daley, Jonathan La Mantia, Stan Yak, Aaron Pittman, and Lukasz Kowlaczuk.
This zine contains essays and information covering anything you might want to know about this project. From inspiration to execution, this is the definitive behind the scenes look at Polybius Dreams. Featuring cover art by Jenna Cha.
Polybius Dreams features some heavy subject matter, such as violence and self harm involving teens. For this reason, we are including a parent’s guide that should help provide context and perspective. This is something we are primarily offering in person, because many young people know of the urban legend, and we want parents to make an informed choice should they purchase this book.
The Cassette Tape
This cassette features original music inspired by the comic, composed by Brandon Pace, aka Vile Science. These electronic, low-fi beats perfectly enhance your reading experience, and this cassette makes for a neat collectors item. Featuring cover art from Becka Kinzie and Ester Salguero. Run time is 26 minutes.
All publications are available in pdf form for $5. Digital rewards also include a digital download of the soundtrack.
Becka Kinzie Art
If you are an art collector, we are making the original line art from Becka Kinzie's illustration that you see on the cover of the cassette tape.
Kelly Williams Art
This painting was among the very first works of art commissioned for this project. It was commissioned before we had the final title. While it is not without sentimental value, Kelly Williams is up and coming in the comic book community, and it might make a collector happy to own this piece.
Original artwork comes with all other rewards, and a copy of the first printing of Polybius Dreams with the Kelly Williams cover. (We only have one left!)
Local Pick Up
If you live in the Buffalo area, you may pick up your rewards in person, either at the Free Comic Book day event at Dave & Adam's, or at Nickel City Con. Shipping will refunded only after your rewards are picked up.
If all goes well (and honestly, we have no indication that it won't) we'll be starting work on Polybius Dreams Chapter 3 later this year! For now, enjoy Keith and Ester's cover for the next book.
Risks and challenges
All of the content is finished for the comic and the tape. Very little risk here, since this book is definitely coming out.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
