Hi! Thanks so much for dropping by!
My goal is to raise enough funds to print the first batch of my new limited edition prints, the Stardust series, in order to get them to you! This campaign will act almost like a pre-ordering system for the new Stardust prints and the rest of the rewards, including various sized prints and greeting cards from my previous designs.
★ A bit about me...
I'm Alyson, a 30 year old Australian graphic designer and illustrator, currently living in London and working in the creative team at Macmillan Cancer Support. I've just reduced my hours at Macmillan to part time in order to focus more on my creative work and to have more time for creating prints and taking Alykat Creative to the next level! (hence why I'm struggling to afford launching these without your help!)
★ How I got to where I am...
I started creating prints and handmade greeting cards from my artwork about 5 years ago under the name Alykat Creative. My first limited edition print run was of 50 and originally created as a submission to the 2012 Semi Permanent and Curvy books, titled The Horses Will Play. To my surprise it was published in both books that year and featured and sold at the Curvy exhibition in Sydney. All 50 signed and numbered large prints are now sold out!
After receiving so much interest in my one and only print, I realised this was something I wanted to do more of! I really wanted to draw animals, but animals in slightly different environments doing slightly odd things, and I created the Animal series. Five limited edition prints of just 20 and launched them displayed in ornate frames in a bar in Melbourne. From this, I met a lovely girl who owns a lovely little shop in Melbourne who started stocking my work.
These were received really well and I eventually created some more animal themed prints, this time with a bit of a story behind them.
Escape from the Circus featured another five limited edition prints of 20, and all relate to animals fleeing from a life performing on demand in a circus. These were met with a really great response from my now growing supporter base.
I then took a financial risk to hold my first Alykat Creative stall early last year at Melbourne's contemporary graphic art fair, Supergraph, where I amazingly sold out of a lot of prints and far outweighed my expectations!
It was such an awesome experience to have so many people supporting and interested in what I do, it was definitely a highlight in my creative career.
I think the adrenaline and thrill of Supergraph, along with numerous other things going on in my life at the time, awakened my urge to put myself out of my comfort zone and feel alive! So I decided to finally take advantage of my grandparent’s English and Scottish roots and moved to London on an Ancestry Visa. Although it has been an absolute roller coaster ride and an amazing 12 months, it has definitely been hard to get back into my creative work. Finding the time and having the motivation when starting from scratch and there's a whole other side of the world to explore, is somehow a lot more difficult than I anticipated. So after having lost some of that momentum from the buzz of Supergraph, I finally pushed myself to pick up the pen and watercolor and just get started!!
★ And where I want to go...
So, having finally found my mojo, here we are! the Stardust series. Four new and fresh pieces of work that I'm really excited about, that adrenaline is back and I'm ready to get back out there! These A3 limited edition of 50 prints will be printed on heavy archival Giclee' paper, (Hahnemühle Photo Rag Ultra Smooth, 100% Cotton, pH neutral, Acid Free art paper) which is 100+ years lightfast and printed with high quality French inks and will of course be signed, titled and numbered.
I've already had such an amazing response these last few weeks as I've been posting each design on my social media channels as they finish.
Frustratingly the only thing actually stopping me from producing these new works and all of my previous designs as unlimited prints and cards, is the upfront cost of getting the stock printed and packaged!
So having just pledged to another Kickstarter project myself, I thought this would be a great idea! People already interested in buying my work could pledge for it upfront and in turn enable me to print it for them! Hopefully, win-win!
★ Where your money goes
If I reach my target goal, it will fund the first lot of prints from the new Stardust series, along with a bunch of unlimited prints and greeting cards of my previous work, which has been in demand for the past couple of years as well!
Depending how much I raise through this campaign, my next creative goal is to hold a stall in East London's D.I.Y Art Market in Dalston. I went to the last one recently and was absolutely blown away by the mix of art and design on show and being able to meet and talk to the artists behind the work got me so inspired to really do all of this right now! So, let's see how it all goes.
★ The creative process
People often ask how I create my work, so here’s a brief run through to help understand what it is I actually do!! I'm a graphic designer by trade and loved to draw as a kid. Once I have an idea of the type of things I want to draw (..usually animals!) I collect a bunch of images, print them, and using a light box to get the proportions right, draw my heart out with a biro until my wrist aches! On a separate piece of paper, to avoid ruining the pen detail, I then draw the colour with watercolour paints. I scan both sheets into Photoshop, tediously clean them up and start playing around with the different elements to create a scene.
This is actually where I feel most creative! After adding different textures and background photos, changing colours and effects, I'll eventually decide to leave it alone and voila, a new design is born!
