Thanks for reading about our project.
We are What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? and we've just finished recording a foxy new album. Over the last 2 years we have used money from every gig we've played to pay for studio time. We've put a truckload of passion, thought, and love into these songs and recordings. In addition to our band, we also brought in a guest string section, children's chorus, and accordion player to bring the songs to an even higher level. We couldn't be happier with the results.
Working with engineer Tony Goddess (Papas Fritas) at Bang A Song Studio, has been an amazingly creative experience. We believe this is the best work we've done. Tony has played tracks for numerous people who are unfamiliar with our band, and has said everyone has had their minds blown away by the song craft, arrangements and performances they've heard. The feedback makes us believe we're onto something with this one.
All the vocals and instruments are down on tape. We are done recording! But we've run out of money, and it could take another year to earn enough funds for the final steps. So we've decided to ask for help from fans and friends to get it done.
The final steps are Mixing, Mastering, & Manufacturing.
Mixing ($3,000 for 13 songs) is working with a mixing engineer to make sure all the instruments are balanced in every song. This is how we make sure the vocals are loud enough, and add effects like reverb, echo, and compression to polish each song off, bringing out the best parts of each performance. This is one of the most important steps, taking time and attention to detail.
Mastering ($2,000) is working with a mastering studio to put all the songs in order, make sure they flow well together, and add some final adjustments, before making a "master CD" for the manufacturing plant. This is also how we make sure the recording stands up to other professional CDs and is ready for radio play.
Manufacturing ($2,000 for 1,000 CDs) is the cost of actually making the CDs, booklets, etc. so we can give you the final product. The manufacturing plant also throws in things like free posters, promotion, etc.
Plus, another $1,000 for printing of t-shirts, radio promotion, fees, taxes.
We've compared prices of engineers and studios with reasonable rates and great reputations. We've even had engineers competing to mix this album. So we know we are getting good prices from quality engineers!
Everything is ready to go! Once we have the funds, we're heading straight into Mixing, and then Mastering. Bandmember, artist, and animator Norah Solorzano has already started designing the CD packaging. So right after Mastering, we can send the CD out to be manufactured, and then get it into your hands in time for our CD release on February 3rd in Harvard Sq.
And BONUS! With these final mixes we'll also get to compete some incredible projects:
Ruth Lingford has already animated a short film for the song "The Ladies Tree" about Joan of Arc. When she gets that final mix of the song, she can start sending it into film festivals all over the world. (And she's already received many awards for her work, so fingers crossed, this song will get to a huge audience.)
Emile Doucette (Guster's "Do You Love Me? ") directed a video for our song "Helium" featuring a whole group of circus artists - jugglers, contortionists, aerialists, and acrobats. When we're done mixing, he can start editing the video.
And finally, we shot a video for "Deep Waters" at some of the quarries in Rockport, MA, and the footage looks beautiful and haunting, like a cross between "True Blood" and a pre-Raphaelite painting. We got about 20 friends to donate time and camerawork to this video, and with the final mix, we can finish editing. All three videos will be shown at our CD release party!
We know that not all of our fans can contribute, and we completely understand. We've been there! If you have come to any of our performances over the last 2 years, you have already contributed to this CD. If you can forward this campaign to friends and potential fans, that would be huge contribution! If you can afford to pledge, we have some amazing rewards to share from the actual CD, posters, and t-shirts to house concerts, musical lessons, custom animation, and free VIP tickets to upcoming shows!
And remember the way Kickstarter works, if we don't meet our goal of $8,000 in pledges, we get nothing at all. With support from friends and foxy like you, we will meet that goal! If we exceed the amount, additional money will go into our promotional tour and radio campaign.
Thank you for reading about what we've created! We're psyched to finally get the music into your ears! And if you haven't watched our video, check it out. We've tried to make something unique that will be make you laugh out loud!
