Kim Smith is creating a full-band studio recording of his unique arrangements of popular songs for the cabaret stage!
After seven years on the intimate stage, I'm knuckling down and preserving on record (or MP3, rather -- how timeless) some of the unique and exciting arrangements of cabaret music that I have performed all over Australia, New York City, San Francisco, and beyond! This will be my first ever studio cabaret recording, and I'm thrilled to see this dreamlette on its way to being realised!
We aim to create a five to six song EP (Extended Play) which not only conjures the feel of my live shows, but takes advantage of the added instrumentation and effects a studio environment can afford -- incorporating horns, harp, strings, accordion and all manner of fun new things, and blending them with my existing stylistic mash-up of Weimar-era Berlin, and modern day pop.
I'm thoroughly excited to be collaborating with producer/arranger/band leader extraordinaire, Benjamin Ickies (House of Yes,This Ambitious Orchestra, Bindlestiff Family Cirkus), and his rogues gallery of musicians, to explore further these wonderful songs, and mine their potential to thrive and fascinate.
The money raised here will go towards paying for these excellent musicians, our rehearsal time and studio time, as well as producing, mixing, mastering and distributing the record. Depending on what is raised, I may also issue a physical CD release of the record, though at this stage my prime focus is to create a wonderful listening experience, and at the very least, make the results available digitally.
I hope you're as excited as I am to get this music out of our minds and into our iPods!
