UPDATE 1/29/2013: UNDERLAND REACHES ITS CAMPAIGN GOAL!
Thank you, so much, to everyone who is supporting our work on Underland. With your help, we intend to do something incredibly special. It's not too late, though, to get involved or to pledge at a higher level and receive those rewards! In an attempt to give back to the Central Ohio Community, we are adding a Stretch Goal!
STRETCH GOAL: $21,000
If we can raise $21,000, not only will we be able to afford major improvements to our lighting, costume, set and multi-media design for Underland ... but we will add a special performance to the show's run. This performance will just be for United States Military Veterans and their families and tickets will be free! We intend to promote the event through local and regional Veteran groups, should we reach our goal, and really provide a special evening to those who have served and sacrificed for our country.
Thank you once again for joining us in this campaign and making all of this a possibility; this project is very special to us and we're very excited to share it with those that have supported us. If this is your first time reading about our campaign, read onward to learn more about Underland and get involved today!Who We Are, and What We Are Doing
As the largest resident theatre company in America, we have a history of creating great new works of theatre, as well as re-imagining classic and lesser-known plays, smash-hit musicals and popular music in our live productions. Beyond our edgy sketch comedy, we have premiered several original Rock Operas, Musicals and Plays over the past twenty-five years; many of these original works were written by myself, as our Head Writer in Residence, or by Stev Guyer, our Artistic Director.
But we are about to embark on our most ambitious project yet with our new Musical, Underland. For the past year, I have been plugging away at the script for this new musical, which is inspired by Lewis Carroll's novels, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There. The musical is set in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco during 1967, the famous Summer of Love, and tells the story of a Vietnam Veteran suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, on a quest to find his missing daughter.
This will be a jukebox musical, much like the award-winning production of Back to the Garden, which I wrote in 2009 to tell the story of the 1969 Woodstock Festival. That means that the musical will use recognizable classic Rock and Roll songs, specifically from the year 1967, to tell the story.
Whereas Back to the Garden told a true story, Underland will very much be an elaborate, touching fantasy of bold ambition. It will require a lot of resources to successfully share this story with the audience, to draw them into the time period and world of Haight-Ashbury, then challenge them to understand what is real and what is fantasy.
Recently, we've put a lot of heart into energizing Shadowbox Live's Musical Series; this year, we produced a number of musicals, including the cult hit Reefer Madness.
I also wrote another new musical this year, Burlesque de Voyage, focusing on the twisted inner-workings of a Neo-Burlesque troupe. We produced it this past fall, and it was another smash-hit for us.
So, even though Underland will be our most ambitious original work to date, undertaking bold challenges is nothing new for us.
We know that we can do it. We're passionate about this story and sharing it. However, we need your help; we need to raise $16,500 to make this production a reality, including the funds to follow through on our pledge promises and processing fees. We've already allocated $10,000 of our own funds to bring Underland to life. We're looking for your hand for the rest.
You can help us make history. Again.
Update 1/16/2013: The $100 Pledge Level Gets a Kick!
In response to raising over $1,000 in less than our first day of the campaign, we are adding a bonus incentive to anyone who pledges at the $100 level (or above!) We will continue to retroactively unlock new pledge rewards when we reach 25%, 50% and 75% of our goal!
You will now receive two additional tickets at this level of giving, for a total of three tickets to any performance of Underland (excluding the opening night performance). So, if you're planning on coming out and seeing the show with your friends or family, please consider the following:
If you invest in the show now, not only can you receive tickets for it, but you will actually be helping to produce the show that you will eventually get to watch, live! We want you to be a part of this and hope that you'll join us in this theatrical adventure of ours.
Update 1/23/2013: Underland blows past its 25% goal!
After our most successful 24 hours of fundraising yet, our campaign is only picking up steam as we enter our second week of Kickstarter! Unlocking another level of new incentives, below I have listed some awesome updates for you to take a look at. Remember that any new pledge incentives will be retroactive!
New Pledge Level: $200
In addition to everything in the $50 and $100 pledge levels, you will also receive hotel stay to coincide with your visit to see Underland via one of Shadowbox Live's partners. You will receive free hotel stay in a room for a night with a maximum occupancy of three in Columbus, subject to availability. We're excited to be able to offer this so that our friends and supporters from outside of Columbus can come and enjoy the experience that they are helping to shape through their support!
Bonus Incentive: $2,000
As a new bonus incentive to pledging at this level, you will receive one 2013 Season Pass, which is good for two tickets to all of the 18 Shadowbox Live Mainstage Productions this year! We added this incentive to give back to our staunchest supporters.
Bonus Incentive: $5,000
As the final new bonus incentive, we wanted to add one of our perhaps most exciting (for us!) opportunities. At this level, you will now ALSO be invited to a special Backstage Dinner for Two, where you will be catered to backstage during the show and get to experience Underland in a cool, truly unique way! If you ever wondered just what the crazy world of theatre is like backstage during the show, then you understand just how awesome this incentive is. It should be a blast!
Update 1/25/2013: Underland smashes the 50% mark and keeps growing!
After a few truly amazing days of the community coming out to support our campaign, we've soared past the half-way point to reach our goal. That means it's time to unlock several new, exciting pledge incentives. The first that we added today was in response to a great comment from Liselle Awwal from Scandinavia, who wanted to support Underland but has no means to come see the show. We took her suggestions and have decided that we are going to do a weekly video blog with interviews from the director, writer, choreographer and cast to show production and rehearsal process; then, we are going to share those sneak-a-peek video blogs with our Kickstarter supporters each week! Check out the new incentives listed below!
Bonus Incentive: $10
We've added this level as an entry point for folks who can't support us at larger amounts, or have no means to actually come to Columbus to enjoy the fruits of their support. At this level, you will receive a digital copy of the Underland marquee poster and be included, with the rest of our backers, in a weekly distribution of a video blog documenting the progress of Underland!
Bonus Incentive: $5,000
We've yet to bring in anybody at this level of pledging yet, but ... wow ... what a great opportunity for a truly personal, special way to connect to Underland and this project. In addition to all of the other great things that we will share with you at this level, we've added two more! You will be invited to perform alongside the cast at a time of your choosing, serving as an extra ensemble member for that performance of Underland. You will also be able to work with the writer of Underland and claim immortality by naming one of the characters in the show! Of course, we won't sacrifice the integrity of the show, so whether you choose your name or your grandfather's name, it must make sense in the period and setting of Underland.
Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us this far. We have a challenging final week ahead of us to reach our goal and fund this project, so stay engaged, help us spread the word and let's make Underland everything that it can be, together!
Risks and challenges
The greatest risks we will face in producing Underland, once we have the funds to support our production, will be creative in nature. With such an ambitious script and artistic concept, this musical will require us to push ourselves creatively, so that the script engages the audience on an emotional level, pays truthful tribute to the period that it is set in and immerses the viewers in a unique and moving experience.
That kind of success is never a given.
However, we are lucky in that we have a team of great, creative minds with many years of experience tackling challenges like this. I will write, re-write and re-write again, ensuring that the script meets the demands of this story. Our team will ensure that our costumes, our sets, our actors' performances are all true to this world, this time, this story.
That burden is on our shoulders. If we can do, again, what we have succeeded at in the past, then we won't let you down with Underland.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
