About

Thank you for visiting my project page! I am happy to introduce Moon Cards--a custom deck of cards to be printed by US Playing Card Company showing the phases of the Earth's natural satellite. Like all my books and cards, I designed the Moon Cards to help you connect more deeply to the natural world by doing something as easy and fun as playing your favorite games.

I have put a great deal of time and care into designing the Moon Cards. Now I need your support to bring them to life. You can help make this happen by backing this project, and sharing it with your community.

The deck captures the phases of the moon in a natural and intuitive way. Red suits show the moon waxing (growing) while black suits show the moon waning (shrinking). The number on the index shows the number of days before or after the nearest new moon. Low numbers show a crescent moon. Sevens or eights show a quarter moon. Higher numbers and royalty show a gibbous moon. Aces show a full moon.

The 7 of diamonds shows the first quarter moon. The 10 of hearts shows a waxing gibbous, 10 days old. The queen of spades shows a waning gibbous moon. The four of clubs shows a waning crescent moon 25 ½ days old - 4 days before the next new moon.

Each card is rich in information, while keeping a clean, elegant appearance. The card clearly labels the phase, the age of the moon, and shows where the moon is in its orbit around the earth.

The images on standard card faces were created by the Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio at NASA. The images were generated using elevation data gathered by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Using computer generated images rather than photographs allows precise timing of each image and produces perfectly consistent lighting and color balance.

The size of the moon in the sky varies because the moon's orbit is not perfectly circular. As the moon's elliptical orbit takes it closer to the earth it appears larger to us. About once each year, the moon reaches perigee (closet to the earth) within a few hours being full. Such a full moon is called a super moon. When the moon is at apogee (farthest from the earth) when it is full, it is called a micro moon. In this deck, hearts and spades show a cycle culminating in a super moon. Clubs and diamonds show the waxing and waning of a mini moon.

The major suits show the super moon of May 6, 2012. The minor suits show the micro moon of November 28, 2012. All of the moon images are proportional to one another and show the 14% difference in apparent size between a super moon and a mini moon.

The jokers in the deck depict eclipses. The moon's orbit is tilted with respect to the earth's orbit around the sun. About twice each year, the moon crosses the plane of earth's orbit while it is new, creating a solar eclipse somewhere on earth. Two other times each year, it crosses this plane when it is full, causing a lunar eclipse.

The deck includes three jokers. One shows a total solar eclipse, the second a lunar eclipse, and the third an annular eclipse. Unlike the main images on the indexed cards, the eclipse images are photographs taken by expert astro-photographers.

The back of each card shows an image of the far side (the "back") of the moon. The moon is tidally locked to the earth, which means that we always see the same side of the moon. The back of the moon was not seen by human eyes until the space age. The image I used for the card backs was taken by the astronauts of Apollo 16. It shows the rough, heavily crated surface devoid of the large maria that are so prominent on the moon's familiar face.

The font used on the Moon Cards is Futura Medium--the official font of the Apollo space program and the font used on the plaques left on the moon by each lunar landing expedition. Like the Saturn V rockets used in the Apollo program, Futura is the product of German design. Created by Paul Renner in 1927, Futura still has a modern look and feel.

New Rewards: Night Sky Cards & Field Guide:

I am pleased to offer my original astronomy playing cards and award winning field guide as additional rewards for backers of the Moon Card project. Published in 2010, "Night Sky: A Field Guide to the Constellations" received an Honorable Mention in the National Outdoor Book Awards. Reward copies of the "Night Sky" field guide will be signed and dedicated to you or the person of your choosing.

The National Outdoor Book Awards calls Night Sky "a perfectly portable companion for a night under the stars."

My original "Night Sky" playing cards are a great companion to the night sky guide. The cards display the same star charts as the guidebook, and are organized in an intuitive and easy to understand way. Each card features its own constellation and the suit represents the best season for viewing. Please note that the "Night Sky" cards are slightly over-sized. The deck is 10% larger than a standard deck of playing cards (2.75" x 3.85") and will not shuffle together with the Moon Cards.

Risks and challenges

This is my first Kickstarter, and my self-published deck of playing cards cards--but not the first deck of cards I have designed. My "Night Sky" playing cards were published in 2010 and have very been well received.

The artwork for the Moon Cards is complete, and I've had a mock-up printed by a print-on-demand publisher. I am in regular communication with the folks at US Playing Card Company and have everything formatted to their specifications. I am keeping this project simple. I'm not offering matching poker chips or custom prints of the artwork. I'm focusing all my attention on creating and delivering a single, beautiful deck of playing cards.

Still, being new to Kickstarter and to self-publishing, there are a few steps that could get delayed. I plan to make some small adjustments to the deck based on feedback I got on the mock-up. I need to finish laying out the tuck-box. I will need to approve the proofs from US Playing Card Company. Finally, I will need to package and ship all the rewards--likely over 1,000.

My team of advisers includes the past production manager for a small publishing house, and an e-commerce business owner with expertise in order fulfillment. They will be able to help me with any challenges I run into in preparing the files, getting proofs approved, or fulfilling on rewards.

If everything goes perfectly, I could receive the cards and begin shipping around the time of the lunar eclipse on October 8. But I'm not expecting everything to go perfectly. My project timeline allows for up to two months of delays while still assuring US delivery before the holiday season and before the winter solstice--which falls on the new moon this year.
