About this project
Turn the steel version of the Apple Watch into the gold version. How?
Order the Midas Touch gold plating kit and do it yourself. Includes the real gold.
Roll like a mega rich baller with your gold plated watch.
They will not know it's not the $10,000 version.**
**unless they remove your watch from your wrist and look at the serial number on the back.
Apple charges $10,000 to $17,000 for the gold Apple Watch Edition. The steel version of the watch costs 95% less and has identical hardware.
The estimated value of gold in the Apple Watch Edition is $650. The markup between the steel and gold is a marketing strategy, making the gold watch the most profitable product ever for Apple.
Use the latest hack to transform your smart device! You don’t need to give $10,000 to Apple when you can create an identical looking gold watch yourself for $97 with our Midas Touch gold plating kit.
Don’t get me wrong – I love Apple products, such as my iPhone. However, the $10,000 Apple Watch Edition is absurdly expensive and disproportionately priced just for the sake of creating a high-end luxury item.
The Science of Gold Plating
The thin layer of 24K gold from the plating process is as real as solid gold. Gold plating has been used in the watch industry for decades. Designer brands gold plate their watches, such as Michael Kors, Versace, Marc Jacobs, Burberry, TAG Heuer. The gold plating process is even older than that – it was discovered in the early 19th century.
How does it work? Electrochemistry! It is similar to what happens when you charge your cell phone lithium ion battery. While charging, positively charged lithium ions (Li+) are converted to uncharged Li atoms via the power of the USB charger.
In an analogous process, gold plating converts positively charged gold ions (Au+) dissolved in the premixed solution in the kit into neutral gold atoms (Au) that atomically bond with the steel surface. This is not paint – the gold becomes a part of the metal on the steel surface. The surface has a pure gold top layer like the solid gold in the $10,000 Apple Watch Edition.

Risks and challenges
Two main challenges:
1) Educating kit buyers
The kits are a rewarding project for those of us who like to do things ourselves.
Review and follow instructions; plating is a sensitive process. Mishandling the solutions could harm you. Wear rubber gloves. Splash goggles are recommended. Use in a ventilated area. Do not drink the solutions! This is not a toy. Keep away from children.
Do not dump the solutions down the drain. Dispose in accordance with your local regulations, as you would for many paints and cleaning solutions.
Instructions and video tutorials are included with kit.
2) Creating long lasting gold plating
You will convert your watch into one that looks like the insanely expensive solid gold watch. The plating may eventually show signs of wear. Our kits include enough gold for a long lasting thick plated layer. Also, you can touch re-plate worn areas with the kit.
As an added bonus, you can switch back to your original steel watch by using an abrasive polish to remove the gold plating. That’s something the $10,000 watch buyers cannot do!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
