Since the rise of social media, the fitness industry has been experienced meteoric growth. Unfortunately, there hasn't been much infrastructure to support that growth. Athletes and the facilities they use each have distinct problems, and GymSpot is here to solve them.
Many athletes and recreational gym goers are constantly on the road, and finding a gym that supports your interests can be difficult. Whether you're interested in powerlifting, martial arts, or you want to go for a swim - it can take half an hour or more of internet searching to find a gym.
Commercial facilities have to navigate complicated, expensive marketing tools like SEO, Google Adwords, and paid social media posts. GymSpot is the most targeted marketing tool for gyms, it's the easiest to use, and it is by far the cheapest option.
The home page will look much like a news feed from other apps you enjoy. It will be streamlined for things like science based educational content, social media collaborations, and news. It will not be cluttered with random ads, and we will only be partnering with brands that share our vision for truthful, evidence based content.
The search page has probably gone through the most iterations. All of the results will be based on the preferences/geolocation you specify on the settings page. The search bar will allow you to type in zip codes, cities, or towns so you can pre-plan trips; that's very important if your sport requires specific equipment! There will also be icons next to each gym name that indicate things like whether or not they have a pool, showers, if they support a specific competition organization, etc.
The facility landing page solves important problems for customers and gyms alike. For gyms, all you have to do is fill out your profile on our website and everything else is done for you - it's as easy typing in your information. For athletes, every piece of information you need to make a buying decision is right here for you. There will be a space for each gym to have a facility tour video. That way athletes can see inside the gym ahead of time and gyms have an opportunity to personalize their message or provide extra information to their customers.
The settings page is the backbone of GymSpot's effectiveness as a gym locator app. Gyms will select what they support in their profile and users will choose what they look for here. This way, if a person is looking for a gym that supports powerlifting, they know the gym supports powerlifting. Between that level of specificity and the geolocation function, customers will be able to find exactly what they are looking for in no time.
Here is a bigger list of the interests GymSpot will support:

- Mixed Martial Arts
One cool part about setting up our database like this is that gyms will have the opportunity to promote events they are holding, and everyone that shares that interest within an x-mile radius will get a notification of the event. A lot of time and energy was put into the architecture of the app. It's very important to us that your user experience is as straightforward as possible - for athletes and for gyms.
The $5 club will have a page on our website dedicated to them, and each person will get their own shout out on social media (if they choose). For $10, you can choose from 1 of 10 fitness programs written by a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist.
For $20, you will receive an abridged copy of Justin Gosselin's new book "Fitness From First Principles". The book is structured like a textbook, but written in easy to understand language. The great thing about these rewards is that there is no risk of them being delayed, you will have them shortly after we successfully close our Kickstarter.
For gyms that want to pre-register through Kickstarter, it is only $50 for the first year! Between services like Yelp, Google AdWords, and Social Media spending, most gyms spend thousands of dollars per year to get customers through the door. Our service is easier to use, more accurate, and a fraction of the cost.
The last reward is a weekend seminar/marketing package. We will come to your facility and work with your athletes on everything training/nutrition related. We will produce facility tour/highlight videos, training videos, and do a podcast at your facility - showing the world the awesome culture you've developed at your gym. This package is redeemable at any point down the road, allowing you to really capitalize on GymSpot's future success.
Risks and challenges
Creating any sort of platform where you connect consumers and producers presents a unique "chicken and egg" problem. If there are no users, gyms won't want to participate. If there are no gyms, users may check out our service once and never again. Kickstarter is affording us the opportunity to solve this problem by serving as a pre-register for GymSpot. This way, once our web app is up and running, we will already have facilities in our database.
My co-developers and I have the architecture and pre-production for the web app all mapped out, all we need to do now is fund the development. There are always little snags in software development, but our team has proven success building and selling software. The biggest risk for GymSpot is how quickly we can build our database, because there will always be more athletes than facilities. Part of how we plan to solve this problem is by partnering with different competition organizations and media outlets, offering scientific educational content and infrastructure for their members.
We are going to start development with a simple, mobile friendly web app so backers will see a return on their investment as soon as possible (it's very easy to create internet shortcuts on the home screen of your smartphone). Then, as GymSpot is growing, we will turn our efforts towards the full blown mobile app.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
