I became vegan in the spring of 2009. In the beginning it was my dirty little secret, but today I am a proud advocate of compassionate plant-based grub. My work has taken me on the road through the years and I quickly realized maintaining a vegan lifestyle while traveling was no easy task. I decided to take this challenge by the reins and attend New York City's Natural Gourmet Institute, the country's premiere health supportive culinary school to hone my mad vegan skills.
Vegan skills honed & knives sharpened, I'm headed out on the road again! My work has blessed me with the opportunity to travel and that opportunity has now become my mission...thus, The Vegan Roadie was born...
To create a road map across America for the vegan and “vegan curious” and package it into a fun (and informational) web series to share with the world. I will be searching the country for awesome plant-based restaurants and local markets. I’m excited to chat with chefs and owners, getting into the philosophy behind their business and cooking their most popular dishes with them! I’m even more stoked to pick 5 ingredients from local markets on each episode and cook them up in my hotel room in my “5 Ingredient Challenge”. If I can do it in my hotel room, you can do it at home! The best part is that with your generous contribution you are allowing me to share it with you and the rest of the world!
My travel is taken care of, as is my lodging. But I need my cameraman (The amazing Drew Williams) and our production assistant (the equally amazing Samantha Whetstone) in order to film the web series and deliver top-notch episodes to your laptop! This means we need funding for travel and equipment upgrades. I’ll be covering food for crew and myself but need a bit of do-re-mi (cash) for the recipe’s we want to create for ya’ll and share while in transit. Also, Kickstarter has created this platform and they (justly) require a fee for their services, we have also included this in our expenses. Check out this pie chart (mmm…pie) to see how our expenses break down…
I am asking for the bare minimum to fund this project, when you see that we (hopefully, pretty please!?) reach our goal but you still feel the urge to give… I beg you to do so. The more money we have the more likely it is we can film in all the cities we would like and bring along Samantha, who gets it done on our tight 1 day filming schedule.
In conjunction with the web series our website is being updated daily as a resource for anyone curious about plant-based eats. ..
At www.veganroadie.com you can expect a recipe page, blog and weekly Skype Sessions via Vlog with Chef and Holistic Nutritionist, Ashley Madden. Together we want to bust down the intimidation factor behind the word "vegan" and answer common questions… we also have a mutual love for Beyoncé and may occasionally be prone to dance, prance, twerk or bust out in song. I can’t promise that last part… but you will never know unless we get funded and you can tune in!
In short, we want to be part of the wellness revolution and build a community where people aren’t concerned about labels so much as healthy, inventive and tasty alternatives to meat options. I hope you can join us and donate to making this dream a reality.
Risks and challenges
Everyone on this project works a day job (including me) and is volunteering their time to create this resource for the public. We promise if time runs short, travels are delayed or mother nature (literally) rains on our parade that we will carry on and deliver a first class episode. If a disaster beyond our imagination occurs we will do everything in our power to reschedule, be it with a new city or the one we had unforeseen circumstances arise in.
It’s just me and my cameraman ya’ll, filming in ONE day. That is extremely difficult. This is why I ask you to dig deep and help us surpass our goal so we can bring our production assistant Samantha with us. If she can’t join us you will still get a show, but with her in tow I can guarantee that extra touch of finesse and detail. She ensures that Drew and I can do our jobs to our fullest potential.
