About

Mickey Leland: A Man for All …

The Mickey Leland story is motivated by his ideal of saving the hungry children of the world. Unfortunately, he didn’t live long enough to see his work come to fruition.

On August 7, 1989, Mickey Leland and his party traveled to Ethiopia and against good advice, due to severe weather, began a journey from Addis Ababa to Fugnido, a refugee camp near the border of Sudan. Leland was anxious to get the food they were carrying in the belly of their De Havilland LS Twin Otter aircraft to the camp.

They didn’t make it. The aircraft crashed into a mountain at 4300 feet missing the summit by 300 feet with only 45 miles to go before reaching their Fugnido destination. It took two weeks to find the wreckage. The hope was Leland and his party would be found alive.

The objective of this documentary is to examine Mickey Leland’s life with the use of archival material, narrative and interviews. The interviews come from politicians, writers and newspaper columnist and those who knew Leland best – friends and relatives. Interviews include Governor Ann Richards, political columnist Molly Ivins, Ambassador Andrew Young, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Senator Rodney Ellis, Alison Leland, Congressman Craig Washington, Congressman Jack Fields, Councilman Ben Reyes, Gene Locke, J. Kent Friedman and more.

The initial focus will be to document all of Mickey Leland’s life: how he became a congressman and the many things he achieved as well as looking after the hungry children of the world. Growing up he was taught to give back to the community. He fought drug companies so that seniors could get  generic drugs.  Negotiated release of political prisoners from Cuba, started a kibbutz program that both Arab and Jews participate, opening an important dialog, listening to his constitutes concerns and taking action. The issues that Mickey felt so deeply about did not die with him.  They got bigger.  Our goal is to inspire the next generation of leaders to step up with courage and creativity to fill his shoes.

The film style is based on the time Leland and his party went missing in Ethiopia on the journey from Addis Abbas to Fugnido.

Using flash back technique within the search, the film will discover the life of Mickey Leland; where he was born, where he grew up, where he went to school and how he got into politics. We will see Leland was a man of ambition both for himself and for the betterment of the world. He climbed out of the poverty of Houston’s Fifth Ward to become an influential member of the Democratic majority in Congress and one of the nation’s leading black politicians. He did this on his terms with a lot of passion and charismatic charm.

The conclusion of the film is at his Alma Mater, Texas Southern University. Not in the chapel, but the basketball arena, accommodating the huge crowd that came to pay their respects for this crusader for the hungry, this maverick lawmaker, this vibrant man.

A choir singing, a procession carrying a plain wooden coffin holding his remains that were found on the mountaintop in Ethiopia is the closing scene.

Jesse Jackson had this to say about Mickey Leland, “We won't turn him loose because something about his spirit, his attitude, he disposition…there is something about Mickey that was too much of a treasure to let go.”

"I cannot get used to hunger and desperate poverty in our plentiful land. There is no reason for it, there is no excuse for it, and it is time that we as a nation put an end to it." Mickey Leland.

Risks and challenges

At this time the film is a work in progress.

Most of the filming has been completed and what needs to be done is final edit, narration, music & effects. (SFX)

I see no problem in completing the film, as I have good record in the documentary field.
