UPDATE - DEC 16 - UPDATE
We've hit funding goal!
Thanks to our amazing backers, we're funded and ready for season three. LET'S TALK STRETCH GOALS. We are aiming for $60,000, and here's what it gets us: More days, more cameos, and more sets.
STRETCH GOAL #1: MORE DAYS. The Space Janitors set is very busy. We can usually only afford 9 shooting days, and that means we have to cut some scenes. If we had an extra day on set, we could spend more time getting great improvised lines, or add some additional scenes that would otherwise hit the cutting room floor. An additional day in the studio will cost $10,000.
STRETCH GOAL #2: MORE CAMEOS. We have some special cameos in mind for Season Three, and we want to reach out to our favorite stars from science fiction movies and television. It will cost an extra $10,000 for us to bring in a cameo.
MORE SETS. We always love to bring you a variety of great locations, exploring the universe of Space Janitors. Set construction, both real and digital, is a major expense for our show. Whether it be digital artists or carpenters, it take a lot of time and effort to build a new set. We have great new sets in mind that we would like to build, but the construction will cost $10,000.
UPDATE - DEC 13 - UPDATE
After our first 10 days we're nearly 90% funded. We've released 24 videos as part of our "I Believe" campaign milestone series. In case you missed it, the crew, cast and extended family of friends have been talking about what sci-fi means to them. Subscribe to the Space Janitors YouTube page or check out some of the videos here.
What Is Space Janitors?
Space Janitors is a sci-fi comedy series about a group of twenty-somethings working dead-end jobs aboard a gigantic evil space station. We've completed two seasons which are available for free on YouTube and have been seen over 2 million times. You can check them out here.
Our hero is Darby Richards, the long-lost son of a rebel fish (that's right, a fish!) named Gul de Sac, and the co-worker of three quirky friends chosen by the Empire as his ideal social group. Darby is a low-level custodian, tired of being stuck on the bottom rung of the corporate ladder. If an officer would just give him a chance to prove himself, he thinks he could run the space station and finally put an end to that pesky rebellion! Despite all his big talk, Darby never actually does achieve anything to advance his career. Later on, Darby discovers his father is a rebel Admiral. Being the son of a famous rebel wasn’t what he had in mind, and it’s a dark secret he has to hide from his friend while coming to terms with his own loyalties.
The first two seasons parody every sci-fi subculture and phenomenon imaginable. Escape to a desert planet? Laser battles in the hallways? Imperials versus Rebels? Done, done and done... But Space Janitors is more than a simple parody show. It's a fully realized sci-fi universe of its own, and what really gets us excited are the hilarious and ambitious ideas we're writing right now for season three! We've set up our Kickstarter perks to make sure you stay in the loop and get involved in a truly exciting and unique way.
An Immediate Perk - The JANITORS LOCKER
Every single donor starting at $25 gets the IMMEDIATE ACCESS perk - an immediate same-day subscription to our digital archive and fan club we call the "Janitors Locker". It's all of our episodes at the highest quality - but so much more! There's exclusive producer commentaries, outtakes, unreleased shorts and promo videos, audition tapes, soundtracks, 3d models and sound effects used in the show, and more.
It's not just an archive, either - it's a living fan club. We'll be adding to the Locker as we produce season three with things like live streams from set and exclusive first-look production stills and rough cuts. It's like a Special Features DVD on steroids.
Oh... and if you want a DVD, that's in there too!
At the high end of the perks are some pretty awesome ways to get involved in the show. It's your chance to get your name in the show, or maybe even get a role in the series!
How we use the Funding
Space Janitors is a difficult (and expensive) series to make because of all the costumes, sets, characters, and special effects - but we're not asking you to pay for the whole thing! The good news is we've raised over 75% of what we need from other sources. Your contribution will help us fill the final gap, or if we get into stretch goals, to add crucial days in the studio to our shooting schedule.
Where does the money go? About 70% of our budget goes to pay people for the services they provide. This includes actors, writers, designers, 2D and 3D artists, camera and sound technicians, musicians and composers, drivers, production assistants, directors, the boom operator, makeup, hair, wardrobe, people who work the lights and electricity, people who build props and decorate the sets, and even an accountant. About 25% goes into renting the studio and other practical things that you'll see on screen like costumes, sets and props. We are a small, nimble and connected company, so only about 5% goes into things like photocopying, office supplies, and that type of thing. It's important to us that your dollars will end up on screen!
A Note on Stretch Goals
Space Janitors is a big universe. There is much to explore, and many characters that could do the exploring. Additional funding received will be used to green-light new sets, costumes, characters - and most importantly, give us more time in the studio to film more scenes. Very basically, every additional $10k buys and extra day in the studio, or a new set piece, or allows us to book an additional character.
Doin' It for the Kids!
We're also really excited that we could hire two great students that volunteered services for seasons one and two to help us prepare for production on season three. Unfortunately, we can only afford to have them until March. Any extra funding would allow us to keep them on longer and start the ball rolling for season four right away.
ps - If you LOVE the song in our video as much as we do, check out Kris Roche's page on SoundCloud. This song is called "Astronaut".
Risks and challenges
We have a very talented cast and crew, and this will be our third year in a row producing the series, but the ideas we have for Space Janitors Season 3 are very ambitious and there are always risks and challenges related to any filming project. Hopefully, you've had a chance to see what we've been able to do with our first two seasons, and that has convinced you we are serious about making a great show. If that isn't enough, here's a few bullet points that will hopefully build your confidence:
1) We're insured. We'll have a full production insurance package to deal with any issues that pop up along the way.
2) We're experienced. Davin and Geoff have been producing web series together full time for over 8 years.
3) We're funded. We have already raised over $200,000 from other sources to help fund the creation of season 3.
4) We're working. Even before the Kickstarter campaign was launched, we were busy writing scripts and hiring our crew.
5) We're booked. We've already booked the studio so that we would know exactly what dates you can come to set if you get the character or producer-level perks. It's on!!
6) We'll be live. Everyone who donates gets access to the Janitors Locker, and through that digital archive we'll be live streaming and real-time reporting on the production of season three.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
