About

Championship Baseball - 1924, 1946, 1960, and 2016

Here is your opportunity to relive four of the all time greatest championship series in baseball. All these historic teams are carded for the fast, fun, and realistic baseball game, Pine Tar.

About the game: 'Pine Tar Baseball' is a fun  and fast paced dice and card game for 1 or 2 players that brings all the action of baseball to your tabletop. A typical game can be played in about 25-30 minutes.

The game includes base stealing, tag plays, suicide squeeze plays, defensive range checks, error checks, and much more! Many features are optional allowing you to tailor the game to your personal tastes.

I have a new pitching table in the works for Pine Tar. This table does not currently come with the game (the original does) but you can download the PDF file, print it out and use it instead of the basic table. The new table makes A+, A, and B grade pitchers  stronger, while making E and G grades weaker. I think it models the pitchers better. Here is the link to the Alpha 1A pitching table.  Pitching Table

New Alpha1A Pitching Table
New Alpha1A Pitching Table

I have been replaying the 1960 Pittsburgh team using the Alpha 1A pitcher table mentioned above. In the past, I have had at least 1 person say that pitchers don't matter in Pine Tar. The table below proves them wrong. Hot or cold dice can make it seem that pitchers don't matter for a single game. I have had an A pitcher give up 5 runs in 4 innings, and a G pitcher only give up 2 runs in 5 innings. But you will never get away with that over an extended series.

Below are the ERA's for each pitching grade after 45 games played. This from the 1960's Pittsburgh replay. I am going to play it through and get the final ERA's by grade before making the new pitching table 'official'.

Pitch Grade          ERA

         A+                  1.68

         A                    2.32

         B                    2.91

         C                    5.99

         D                    6.45

         E                     7.94

         G                    8.56

The new table is balanced and tested using pitching checks on rolls of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50

It should be noted, that in order to get league ERA, you would have to play the entire league. I happen to be playing the team that led the NL in runs scored per game in 1960. My ERA's by pitch grade will then be slightly higher than league average. If you play a season with a higher or lower ERA, the pitching grades auto adjust for that, so to speak.

How Pitching Grades Work

The advantage of pitcher grades, is it rates a player based on the average pitcher performance for the specific year. This means that a pitcher for 1960 is being compared to his peers from 1960. This is important because each era of baseball, ie deadball versus modern, has unique factors that effect a pitchers ERA. What this means is that, a C grade pitcher from 2016 would translate to a C grade for 1924. Same with any other grade, with no conversion needed.

I have rated pitchers using my own personal FIP (fielding independent pitching) using 5 key categories. The heart of the Pine Tar pitching system is the 3rd time through the order pitching splits, combined with home/away splits. This means that starters are not simply an A or C grade, but potentially this: A/C away, A+/B home. There SO/W ratio is impacted by their grade. Then their SO/W ratio is fine tuned by strike outs or walks that override other results on certain die rolls.

1924: The 1924 championship features New York vs Washington. In real life Washington won this series in 7 games. Four of which were decided by a single run. The biggest winning margin was four runs.

New York's Roster:   ROSS YOUNGS,  FRANKIE FRISCH, HACK WILSON, HIGH POCKETS KELLY,  IRISH MEUSEL, TRAVIS JACKSON, HEINIE GROH, FRANK SNYDER, BILLY SOUTHWORTH, HANK GOWDY, BILL TERRY, JIMMY O'CONNELL, FREDDIE LINDSTROM, GROVER HARTLEY, VIRGIL BARNES, JACK BENTLEY, HUGH McQUILLAN, ART NEHF, WAYLAND DEAN, MULE WATSON, ERNIE MAUN, ROSY RYAN, CLAUDE JONNARD, HARRY BALDWIN, and WALT HUNTZINGER.

1946: The 1946 championship features Boston vs Saint Louis. This Series alternated with Boston winning, then Saint Louis, then Boston.... etc until Saint Louis finally won back to back games to win it. The Saint Louis team had legends like Joe Garagiola, Stan Musial, Enos Slaughter, Red Schoendienst. Boston's roster featured Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Dom DiMaggio, and Rudy York.

1960: The 1960 championship features Pittsburgh vs New York. One of my favorites with the famous walk off homer in game 7 by Bill Mazeroski. Needless to say, another classic 7 game series. This was a wild one with the winning team scoring 10 runs or more in four different games. There were also 2 shut outs. Pittsburgh features Smoky Burgess, Dick Stuart, Maz, Dick Groat, Don Hoak, Bob Skinner, Bill Virdon, and Roberto Clemente.

New York's roster had Elston Howard, Bill Skowron, Bobby Richardson, Tony Kubek, Clete Boyer, Hector Lopez, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Yogi Berra, and more! Not too shabby.

2016: I wanted to include a recent classic so chose this one featuring Chicago versus Cleveland. Another 7 game series with game 7 going into extras. Chicago won their first baseball championship since 1908.
