The respective champions from both leagues that year. It uses the 2nd edition of the tried and true Pine Tar Baseball game engine that was first released in March of 2015. Complete seasons have been previously released for this game engine and include; 1884, 1889, 1897, 1915, 1936 Negro League, 1973, 1982, 2014, and 2016.There is also a best of set titles,'Legends of Baseball.'
I wanted to issue a smaller card set that will have a shipping weight of 14 ounces or less. This makes the shipping cost affordable for the printed card set. The card set ships for $5 within the US, $9 to Canada, and $14 elsewhere worldwide. The boxed game weighs more so is only available within the US as shipping. If your overseas, I recommend getting the printed cards that will also come with all the rules in PDF format.
The compliment I get most often from players of Pine Tar is of its great playability. Pine Tar is a fun and fast paced dice and card game for 1 or 2 players that brings the greatest baseball players to your tabletop. Ninety percent of plays are resolved in 1 die roll, with no play taking more than 2 rolls. An average game takes only about 25 minutes to play.
This 1979 Champions player set comes on individual cards. The cards used are of the same quality cards as those used in such games as 'Magic: The Gathering' They are on flexible heavy card stock and come with rounded corners. Each card is printed in full color on front and back.
The link below is of a video replay of game 15 from the 1973 season. The video replay was done by Earle from Tabletop Baseball Plus. This season set has the older card layouts. The Tabletop Baseball Plus Youtube channel has many more baseball replays from Pine Tar and other titles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sQUrZ-0uO4
A PDF of the Pine Tar Game Rules is included in ALL Reward Levels - The rules PDF also has score sheets, game mat and all game tables. All you need to play the game is three d10 dice and the player set offered in this Kickstarter campaign.
Lay Out of the Card Sets - This set is available in either a PDF or a printed version. The printed version of the set comes with 50 player cards. So each team has their full 25 man roster available. The Pittsburgh roster is printed in light yellow on the data side and darker yellow/gold on the reverse. The Baltimore roster is printed in light orange on the date side and darker orange on the reverse. Each roster has 9 pitchers and 16 position players.
The card backs have the city name printed horizontally up top. Then 1979 is printed at the bottom at a 45 degree angle to fill out the card back. This way, you can tell at a glance which team the card belongs to.
Cards are made with a 12 point 305gsm black-core matt card stock. This provides excellent color quality, sheen, and snap back. Cards are poker sized. (2.5 x 3.5")

Glen P - Hi James...got my game today, and I gotta say, it's awesome. The components are top notch, some of the best I've seen, and I own a lot of tabletop baseball games. The game play is fun, and easy to learn. After 2 games, I'm already implementing all of the optional rules ..definitely adds to the realism...I will be buying more products from you. Thank you again for your prompt, courteous customer service and your incredibly fun, realistic game....
I knocked out a 3 game series WITH all optional rules...in about an hour and 15 mins. Using defensive checks, the SO/BB ratings, throws out at home on hits...all of them..injury checks too...such a great game...More hobbyists should be playing this game....
Kevin R - My copy arrived today!! Thank you James...it looks absolutely great. The quality of the contents are first class and the production values and attention to detail are superb! Well done too for the amazingly quick fulfillment from initial Kickstarter campaign.
Jess S - I think you have developed a nice compromise between playability, baseball feel and accuracy with PineTar ... and I've played virtually every baseball cards and dice sim since 1967 with my first APBA and Strat sets :)
Reward Levels- Remember that all rewards come with the game rules PDF for Pine Tar Baseball!
At the $4 level: You will receive a link to d/l the PDF that includes 50 player cards that make up the 1979 Baltimore and Pittsburgh championship rosters.
At the $9 level: You receive the 50 printed player cards that make up the 1979 Baltimore and Pittsburgh championship rosters.
At the $26 level: (Not Available overseas) You receive the 50 printed player cards that make up the 1979 Baltimore and Pittsburgh championship rosters. You also receive the boxed game. The boxed game includes all the printed materials for the Pine Tar game, along with 2 golf pencils, 3 game pawns, 1 game wink, and 4 dice.
Please note: If you already have a version of Pine Tar Baseball, you do not need the boxed game again. This player set uses the same rules as previously released for other player sets.
Overseas Shipping - By issuing a two team set, I am able to ship first class overseas for the 1st time. This is much more economical than priority mail. For example: shipping overseas is just $14 for the $9 reward level. I am not offering the $25 reward overseas. The boxed game is over 14 ounces and thus it would have to go priority at up to $67 for postage. From past experience, very few want to pay that much for shipping. I can't blame them.
If your overseas, you can get the $9 reward shipped for $14 and then print out the rules from the included rules PDF. I purposely released the two team set to make the printed cards affordable (shipping wise) to overseas gamers.
Risks and challenges
Risks are minimal as the project is already complete except for possible stretch goal items.
This means that I can get the final print order in just as soon as the funding clears through KickStarter. This takes place 2 weeks after the end of the campaign.
Then I receive the printed items back about 2 weeks after that. Printed rewards then will go out 4 weeks after campaign's end. Everything will be shipped via priority mail within the US. Outside the US, items will be shipped 1st class.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
