Why are we doing this, is it to sell you a great pair of jeans? No. We are building Drift because it is our truth. We believe in creating authentic relationships and living in freedom. Building an awesome pair of jeans is one part of this. We do things differently here at Drift Republic, and that is exactly why the jeans you buy from us will be great.
Create. Be Legendary
Craftsmanship + Kickstarter
Every pair of jeans made for our Kickstarter backers will be hand sewn by co-founders William and Gabe and hand signed. We will be crafting these jeans with Cone Denim from the White Oak mill in North Carolina, arguably the best denim in the world!
A few years ago I found myself in need of a new pair of jeans, so I did the logical thing and went shopping. This did not end well, I was confronted with an overabundance of different styles, fits, and colors in a poorly organized space that did not showcase what the jeans actually looked like or how they fit. Unhappy with the status quo in retail shopping and the overpriced, low quality, poor-fitting garments, I decided to make my own.
I started making jeans in the garage at the end of 2011, and slowly began buying new machines, adding power outlets, lights and shelves. I studied, tried, failed and tried again; ever learning. It has been a journey to get to this point, and for that I am thankful! Turns out there is a lot more to building jeans than one would expect, we have learned so much!
In 2012 I was joined by William Holes; together we are the Drift Republic.
We would like to point out a few things:
- We started with no knowledge of the garment industry
- We're located about as far out of the fashion industry as possible. Proudly designed and made in Boise, Idaho.
- We had almost no money.
We believe that these seemingly negative issues work in our favor.
In the beginning, we viewed the “big 3” as an impediment. With time, we saw that they provided the catalyst to grow, study harder, design better, work smarter and think more creatively than we would have had we grown up in a denim mill, design studio or on a trust fund.
Craftsmanship in manufacturing + Online Retail = Great Experience
Controlling the quality of our products and our customer’s shopping experience is of paramount importance to us. We are able meet this objective most effectively by designing and developing our jeans right here in Idaho and selling directly to the customer through our website.
This provides our clients with the 21st century version of walking into the factory and pulling a pair of jeans straight off the assembly line.
Our jeans are inspired by our life outside, the lithe moves of climbers, long, dirty hours splitting firewood, by hikes, bonfires, road trips, the best coffee shops of the northwest, rocky mountain microbrews and the adventure of international travel. Our jeans ride bicycles to work and sit moodily in the office until they can get back outside with the people and elements they love.
Each pair of Drift jeans sold during our Kickstarter campaign will be numbered 1 through 1000, these jeans will represent the Original Drift run. Each pair of jeans will be sewn and hand signed by William or Gabe! These limited edition jeans will feature a custom colored pocket bag, fly lining and accent thread. This color will be determined by popular vote at the completion of our project by you, our backers. In the event that we sell more than one thousand pair we will create a second edition that will be just as great, if not quite as original :)
"Simplify, simplify" - HD Thoreau
We have taken Mr. Thoreau's thesis to heart. As such, our aesthetics are minimalist in nature. Our style is suited to men whose confidence allows their character to own all they wear. You will never find our logo stamped prominently on the rear of your jeans, we don't rely on someone else's brand to make our personal statement, and we don't intend for ours to make yours.
Doing one thing well makes a whole lot of sense to us. So, we are developing just one fit for our launch. We will be calling this style the “No1”. A slim, straight cut with just enough room to make life comfortable.
We believe that great style is timeless, that it is the finer details, hidden nuances and unparalleled quality that create those “go to” pieces in your closet. We all have that tee shirt we find ourselves pulling out of the closet more than any other, or the hoodie you've worn for years while two others hang untouched in the hall closet. These are the garments that inspire us at Drift.
We will never offer you a distracting number of choices, but a curated selection of a few enduring styles.
We are creating a system of micro-sizes that will accommodate a better fit for real men's bodies than your typical 32/34’s. We will continue to refine this sizing matrix as our experience and resources grow. Upon successful funding of our project we will collect sizing and measurement information from our pledgers to ensure our sizing accommodates everyone well. In this way you play a critical role in assisting us with our final pattern development and the scaling process.
We are incredibly excited to be using Cone Denim; this 13.75oz, raw, selvedge denim is milled at the historic White Oak plant in Greensboro, NC. The White Oak mill is one of the oldest in America, the denim here is still milled on old school, narrow shuttle looms. Producing denim that is only about 31.5 inches wide where as a modern loom is around 69 inches wide. The edges of the denim are sealed closed during the weaving process, creating a self finished edge that does not unravel. This is where the term “selvedge” originated, these beautiful denims are typically heavier, more durable and of superior quality than other denims.
This beautiful denim is also "raw", a term used to describe denim that has not undergone any of the usual washing and distressing processes. This results in a very deep indigo that produces wonderful fades with time and wear. Many raw denim enthusiasts will go 6 months to a year before washing their jeans, this ensures incredibly beautiful and unique fades.
We highly recommend not washing your Drift jeans for the first few months of wear, this will allow the creases and fades to fully develop. When you do finally wash your jeans, use cold water and never, ever throw them in a dryer! Hanging them to air dry will guarantee a long and happy life for your jeans.
Our pocket bags are pretty cool too; we’ve sourced 55% organic hemp, 45% lycell 7.8 oz fabric. This fabric is a perfect trifecta, soft, durable and sustainable!
The quality and durability of our jeans is of paramount importance to us. For us this does not just mean our jeans last longer than, say, your brothers jeans. No, true quality means they look good over the long haul, perform better with time and generally age with grace and dignity. With this in mind we decided we would handle our own manufacturing. At a basic level, this gives us more control and oversight; and frankly we just know we care more, period. One of the great side effects of employing quality craftsmanship and great raw materials is that you create longevity for your product which not only increases the product's intrinsic value over time but limits environmental impact.
Jeans that fit great and are easy to buy.
We are disheartened by the buy and burn culture that is prospering in our society, but slapping an "organic" sticker on a product made in China, sourced in Turkey, packaged in the Philippines and sold at a big box store in your local strip mall is hardly better.
We are taking a more philosophical approach. Our denim is milled in North Carolina. The denim is spun from cotton grown in America. Our thread is from North Carolina as well, though it is not organic it is the best thread in the world and by using it we can guarantee a “complete wear” of your jeans. This means that the seams won't be ripping out before the knee is even beginning to fade. Our buttons are from Kentucky and our beautiful leather patches come from Chicago.
By creating jeans that wear longer, we can eliminate countless pairs from being thrown into landfills with 70% of their life still left in them, reducing the amount of cotton being grown at the approximate cost of 1,800 gallons of water per pair.
"Things that are easy to use survive, regardless of what is fashionable, and people want to use them forever. But if things are created merely for a passing vogue and not for a purpose, people soon get bored with them and throw them away. The fundamental problem is that many products are created to be sold, not used." - Sori Yanagi
We love our local community in Boise, Idaho and the broader Rocky Mountains. We are truly blessed to live with such natural beauty, we plan to do all we can to support and grow this community. Then there is the Republic, all of you out there who support our little brand. We see all of you, our Kickstarter supporters as the foundation of our brand; our job is to exceed your expectations. If you go out on a limb and support a lean, little start up like ours we can damn well treat you to the finest service you’ll ever experience buying jeans.
With Your Support
Drift has come a long ways since 2010; we have invested over $15,000 dollars and 2,000 hours of our time. We have 5 of the 7 sewing machines we need, a great little space and budding relationships with some great vendors.
Now we need you, with your help, we will be able to complete our pattern development, purchase the last two machines, one for hemming and one for button holes, a few other pieces of equipment for the shop like an industrial iron and, last but not least the beautiful raw, selvedge denim for your jeans. With your support we will be absolutely ready to begin full-scale sewing in Boise, Idaho! By supporting our Kickstarter project you are not only helping fund our business but you're pre-paying for your first pair of limited edition Drift Republic jeans.
How your support will help, $15,000 broken down:
If you would like to be a part of reaching our goal you can give any amount here on Kickstarter and join the team of passionate, adventurous souls redefining the way jeans are made and sold. Every dollar helps, and your assistance generating buzz online cannot be overvalued!
With your support of $125 or more you will be one of the first people to own a pair of limited edition Drift jeans for much less than retail price and you will forever be a vital part of the Drift Republic legend.
However you choose to be involved we can't wait to welcome you to the Drift community!
(Please note that the jeans pictured below are prototypes, we are using an organic, slub denim from Texas for the jeans pictured. Our reward jeans will feature the beautiful White Oak selvedge denim and a more refined cut.)
We have spent the last three years aligning all the pieces needed to make Drift Republic a reality. We’ve created our beta pattern, sewn our first samples, tested our jeans in real life and made improvements.
Building any company from scratch is a challenge. Building a denim company that handles their own manufacturing is a huge challenge! But we believe in what we are doing. We have a clearly defined purpose and the passion to pursue it drives us forward. If our message resonates with you and we are successfully funded our reward fulfillment will look like this:
Order White Oak denim / begin final pattern development: June 2013
Complete pattern / begin sewing: July 2013
Cutting and sewing complete: August 2013
Package and ship: September 2013
Through project updates we will keep you abreast of all developments through this process so you know exactly how your jeans are progressing, from pattern development, to manufacturing, to shipping!
Manufacturing at scale is never easy; we've worked especially hard over the past 12 months to make sure we can deliver the very highest quality jeans per the schedule we've outlined.
We may be selling jeans, but at our heart we are a relationship company. If you want a quality product, developed with purpose and passion, made in the great Northwest with American components we will do everything in our power to build a relationship with you and exceed your every expectation.
If we are unsuccessful with this campaign, it will be a heartbreaking blow for Drift! We will be forced to reevaluate our business model as our initial cash flow will be incredibly tight. But it will take a lot more to kill us then one failed attempt, to paraphrase Joseph Chilton Pearch "To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of failing"
Whew, enough is enough eh?
Thank you for considering us and the Drift project; we cannot wait to be a part of your adventures! We would love to get to know you, so please head on over to driftrepublic.com to join our mailing list :) Or follow us on twitter, instagram, facebook and tumblr.
If you are unable to join our campaign at this time, we still can't thank you enough for your attention! If you would be so kind as to share our story we would greatly appreciate it, word of mouth is still the best advertisement in our book!
Gabe & William
Risks and challenges
We have spent the last year working hard to mitigate as many risks as possible, however, we know there will still be obstacles along the way. We will be completely transparent with our community about these challenges. A few of these challenges may look something like this:
EPIC DEMAND & MATERIAL SOURCING
At face value this seems like the perfect problem to have, and we certainly would not complain! We have, however, created a contingency plan in the event of massive support from backers. We’ve confirmed that our machine supplier can ship a second, third, even fourth set of machines if needed. We’ve prepared to add and train staff and reached out to our suppliers to let them know we may see higher demand than expected. With truly epic demand there is a chance that we'd have to push our sewing schedule back as we implement this plan. Rest assured that we will do everything in our power to expedite this process! We will keep you informed every step of the way.
MANUFACTURING & FULFILLMENT
By keeping our manufacturing in-house we are able to insure exceptional quality and consistency; William and I plan to sew each pair of jeans we produce for Kickstarter. Beyond the hands on act of sewing, we will also be faced with a few other challenges of manufacturing: managing the corresponding logistics, partners, timelines, etc. This is where our team of dedicated staff come in, allowing William and I to focus on meeting our deadlines, training new team members as needed and ensuring the highest quality jeans.
Once your jeans are complete, we will be shipping them through the mail. There is a certain amount of risk associated with any shipping service, but we'll make sure we keep track of your order at all times and communicate its progress openly to you.
There is little we are more obsessed with than great fit; our desire to have exceptionally well fitting jeans was what got us into this business in the first place. We have spent nearly three years developing and refining our fit, now we are ready to take it to the pros. We have approached one of the best pattern development firms in the business and they are on standby, as soon as we are fully funded development of our final pattern will begin. Together we are confident that we have set aside enough time to perfect this pattern, however, in the event that it is more difficult to account for all the sizes we receive from our backers we may push our sewing schedule back slightly to guarantee a great fit for everyone.
We want, more than anything, to see this project through and provide you with an exceptional pair of jeans. By building a lasting company, we will be able to build and refine our mission for sustainable fashion. As we are able to demonstrate reliable demand to our suppliers, we will have a foundation from which to work with them on developing a sustainable, organic, selvedge denim. Our goal is to use 100% organic and sustainable materials in our jeans. We promise to do whatever it takes to make this possible!
We will do everything it takes to make sure you are happy, not only with the products you receive, but with our service as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
