What is a Cat Cafe?
A cat cafe is the best kind of cafe! In a nutshell, it's a coffee shop that houses adoptable cats from a shelter. You get to hang out with the kitties while enjoying your coffee.
We're planning to open the first permanent cat cafe in Hawai'i, on the island of Oahu. Currently we're on track to open the cafe in late June of 2018.
Cat cafes have numerous benefits for both the cats and visitors:
- Shelter cats get to live in an open space instead of a kennel
- Hanging out with cats can reduce stress
- Cats have a space to really show their true personalities
- Increase adoption rates
The cat cafe is a business model that has proven to thrive and be successful throughout the United States.
We have partnered with Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). We chose to work with them because of their no kill philosophy.
Our cattery will act as an extension of the amazing work they do. Oahu SPCA will provide us with adoptable cats and kittens, thus opening up more space for them to take in other cats in need. Our hope is that by creating extra space, we will reduce the amount of cats that are abandoned and contributing to the feral cat population.
The cats at the cafe will be chipped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and ready for adoption. 100% of the adoption fee will go to Oahu SPCA.
We intend on spoiling these kitties rotten, and we have a few ideas on how we're going to do it!
We want our cat room to be a paradise for cats and the cat lovers visiting them. Hawai'i Cat Cafe will be decked out with comfy furniture and all kinds of trees and places for the cats to hang out and play.
We're going to be accommodating to the humans too, of course! The space will have a variety of furniture, making it the purrfect place to study, work, relax, play, and hopefully find a furry new addition to your family.
Food & Beverages
Everything in our cafe will be freshly made by either ourselves or a local bakery. Our crepes will be made to order and our coffee will be handcrafted however you like it. We'll also have tea, freshly baked croissants, and best of all, cat shaped cookies!
Some of the fun events we're going to host in the cat room include:
- Speed Dating
- Trivia Night
- Paint Night
We're also going to host workshops for people who want to learn how to foster kittens that are too young for adoption, and for people who would like to learn more about Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR.)
Our cafe is going to be an advocate for responsible pet ownership. We want people who adopt our cats to understand why declawing a cat is inhumane, we want them to understand that there are solutions to behavioral problems other than rehoming.
We want our cafe to offer a wonderful experience that also benefits our community.
There will be a small admission fee to spend time in the cat room. The fee will help cover the cost of litter, food, toys, and other needs for the cats. Hawai'i is a huge tourist destination, and we expect that our cat cafe will become one as well.
Adoption is the main goal for these kitties. We plan to offer a significant discount on the admission fee for visitors with a local or military ID. Cat Cafes are a great way to see if a cat is a good fit for you or your family, and we don't want the admission fee to be a deterrent for potential adopters.
Also, guests who come to the cafe with one of our travel mugs will receive a discount on their coffee.
Our cafe will be environmentally friendly.
Our cups and lids will all be biodegradable. If you've joined the movement to stop using straws to reduce plastic waste, you won't have to worry about that at our cafe.
Cold beverages will be served with a biodegradable straw.
Money Break Down
We're still purrfecting the items and want to give you a few options to choose from! We really appreciate your help and want to make sure that all the items we send out are high quality. We want you to LOVE your rewards, so we're still looking at different suppliers and ordering samples. All of the rewards will incorporate some version of our logo.
We're going to order a variety of merchandise to sell in the cafe, and your rewards will be chosen from those items. Here's a few examples of what we have in mind:
Risks and challenges
Hawai'i is an incredibly expensive place to live and operate a business, so that is definitely a concern. We're going to have to consistently be on top of marketing and drawing in guests with exciting events.
It will be a challenge to find the perfect location on island, especially one with available parking. Right now we are considering different areas around Honolulu, Hawai'i Kai, and Kailua. We've been scoping out a few different places, but are waiting to sign a lease until after the Kickstarter has some backing.
I'm sure there will be unforeseen challenges that will come up along the way. We are fully dedicated to pushing through those challenges with a positive attitude and committing all our efforts to make this cafe work.
