About this project
Cloud Islands is a multiplayer online game aimed at 13 to 16 year-olds, played together with friends and classmates with a focus on bringing fun into the world of education. It features a vast world of scattered, floating islands to explore, minigames to play, a city to customize and a society to build.
Become a backer today and get preview access to a game that we think will change education forever. We need your help to bring Cloud Islands to the world!
Fun is essential for learning
Learning isn’t always easy. The human brain craves knowledge, but unless that knowledge is useful, it has very little reason to hold onto it. Cramming for tests and memorizing facts and dates can not only be frustrating, but your brain has a lot more trouble taking in and keeping these bits of info without having a reason to directly apply it to your life.
By giving students a concrete goal in which they can use their knowledge to reach, they retain information better. This is what gamifying education has shown us, but we’ve taken it a step further.
Cloud Islands increases students’ motivation to learn by integrating school subjects into entertaining and captivating games - not 'educational games', not glorified text books, but truly fun, innovative games that use the concepts taught in school as a game mechanic. Games that expose you to new terms and questions for you to bring to your next class, and that let you play and experiment without being watched or graded.
In your own time, at your own pace
Teachers can only spend so much time on each student - in an ideal world each student would get 100% one-on-one time with a teacher - instead the teacher is forced to spend much of their time addressing everyone, leaving very little time for each student’s questions and individual needs
With Cloud Islands, students can play, succeed and fail without risk or judgement. They can try again and progress at their own pace, in class, at home as an assignment, or just in their free time simply because it's fun to play.
What is Cloud Islands today?
So far we’ve created a pilot map, an open world to explore full of different biomes, resources to collect, and games to play. You can create and customize your avatar using clothing and accessories you find throughout the islands. For a more personal touch to your community, you can build and decorate your own house, visit the homes of your classmates, and contribute money and materials to your city to develop community projects, like parks and shops.
The Rock Golems are trying to steal the crystals that mysteriously keep these islands afloat! That could end in disaster, but fortunately we’ve got defense towers to help fend them off. Power them up using your knowledge of math functions and we’ve got nothing to worry about!
Battle your way through the Pocket Plants League, each plant with its very own skills to take it to the top, using photosynthesis and the elements around it.
Bring out your inner entrepreneur and get on top of your economic skills with Cloud Island’s very own bakery, serving delicious pastries to local inhabitants.
After playing these types of games, you will have picked up new concepts and terms, and will have more questions and motivation to learn!
What we want to do
So far we have 10 minigames covering 10 subjects, and we'll continue making more until we've covered everything in the curriculum. No, really, we want to make hundreds! And we are going to make them all equally fun and captivating.
We also plan to expand the Cloud Islands world with more to explore and collect, additional ways to build up your society, environmental and resource management, trade and much more.
And of course we want to localize Cloud Islands to as many languages as possible to make it available to everyone.
Who are we?
Ludosity Learning is the sister studio to Ludosity, a Swedish studio that's been making great games since 2008 - Ittle Dew, Progress, Card City Nights, and many more. In 2012 we started tinkering with the idea of Cloud Islands and quickly realized we were going to need a separate studio for such a big undertaking. We built a new team together with experts in both games and learning and got to work.
Developing on a shoestring budget we designed the world and built the back-end powering the online server. We won some awards and received some smaller investments to help us stay afloat, but haven’t found a source of sustainable funding yet. We're an extremely dedicated, agile and talented team, and we really feel it's our time to shine and show the world that we can make learning so much more.
Risks and challenges
One of the biggest hurdles we’ve got to jump is to change people's view on games as a tool for learning - educational games are often just seen as exercise books because a lot of software out there is just that. We need to reach out with the fact that we're doing something different: Learning can and should be fun.
When Cloud Islands starts selling in other countries, we need to be able to offer support in more languages. This requires that we have sufficient customer base.
Another risk is of course that we don't reach our goal. We won't give up, but it will slow us down. This Kickstarter would enable us to make Cloud Islands ready for an international market in about a year, launching next autumn. We know that the road can be shaky, but we are determined to succeed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
