Revenge has never been so sweet.
Take control of one of history's greatest monsters, assemble your Legion, and consume all those that oppose you. The hunt has begun.
Prove your worth as a creature of the night in this 3 to 5 player deck building game. Players embody any one of the 7 "Alpha" monsters of GrimmWar to create the strongest deck to represent their legion. The path to supremacy won't be easy though, as Hunters have appeared to thwart your reign of terror.
As an Alpha, players must craft their legion with the cards available from the 2 rivers on the field. As their legion grows, players will be able to acquire stronger minions and abilities. Once strong enough, Hunters can be faced head on and incorporated into your legion's ranks. However, don't take too long. Once one of the river decks is empty, the Hunters will end the game and claim victory.
What's a proper hunt without some not-so friendly competition?
Although the objective of the game is to defeat the Hunters and create the strongest legion, the other Alphas in the game are on the same mission. There are numerous cards to help you, and a majority of the cards are aimed at sabotaging your opponents. Give, exchange, and discard opponent's cards to rig the competition. Rivalries quickly form as players scheme and stab each other in the back in the pursuit of victory.
GrimmWar features 7 Alphas that represent the strongest of classic monsters. Be it the chaotic Faerie or the shape-shifting Doppelganger, each Alpha has an ability that represents their true nature.
Hunters are the ultimate prey. The villagers tried standing up to the Alphas on their own, but were quickly defeated. These Hunter mercenaries are their final chance.
Hunters make up the third deck on the field. All hunters, except the Desperate Villagers, are shuffled together before the game starts. Desperate Villagers are always the first Hunters to appear each game and are placed face up on top of the hunter deck.
At the end of every round, the hunter phase begins. During this phase, the current hunter on the field activates its ability and dramatically affects gameplay. These abilities can cause players to discard their highest strength minion, block Alpha abilities, or even change the affects of other cards. Once bought, Hunters are added to a player's discard pile and can then can be used against other players.
Special Abilities and Battlegrounds
Along with normal abilities, the Ability deck contains Special and Battleground cards. Special cards can drastically affect the player's turn when played. Battlegrounds are cards that become permanent, persistent abilities after played. These cards can provide unique advantages to players throughout the game, however they are low in value.
Before the game starts, players are designated an Alpha that gives them an unique advantage throughout the course of the game.
Each player receives a starting deck containing starter minions and weaknesses. These decks are then shuffled, and each player draws their starting hand of 5 cards, and the hunt begins.
GrimmWar is played in rounds that start with the youngest player and proceed clockwise. Once all players have taken their turn, the round ends with the Hunter Phase.
Decks for Hunters, Abilities, and Minions take up the field. One Hunter is placed faced up while the the minion and ability decks both have rivers of 5 cards each. Players may purchase any cards on the field to incorporate into their deck.
On the player's turn, they may play any cards in their hand. The cards can be used in a variety of ways:
- Activate abilities to help yourself.
- Attack opponents.
- Use the accumulated strength to buy cards from the rivers.
- Kill the Hunter and add them to your legion.
Once a player purchases a card from the field, they may NOT play any more cards from their hand. Once the player decided to end their turn, they must discard their hand and any cards used this turn. A new hand is drawn from their deck and play continues to the next player. When the player runs out of cards in their deck and must draw, then reshuffle their discard pile and place it face down. This becomes their new deck.
Game Over, Man...
Once all Hunters have been killed, the Hunt ends. The victor is decided by combining the value of each card in their deck. However, if either of the minion or ability decks are depleted, the hunt ends and all players lose.
Who are we?
Axel Boutry, Chris Yarka, Matt Greenhill, and Mario Ramirez are the creators of GrimmWar. They met and graduated from the Game Design program at Columbia University in Chicago. Both separately and together, they have worked on several games, and, using their knowledge of game development, believe that by combining the deck building and monster genres, they have created a game for all to enjoy.
$10,000: Goal Reached: Game is made!
$12,000: Goal Reached: A new hunter: Benny Hart will be unlocked for all backers of the full game.
$15,000: A new Hunter and Alpha join the fray! Lilith the Dullahan Alpha and Chisai Akai's younger sister Chisai Aoi are added to the main game.
We chose Kickstarter because we felt this was the best way to spread the word about GrimmWar. It was the fastest and smartest way to gain momentum and finances as young game developers.
Why 10,000 dollars?
5,000 dollars for shipping and handling
2,000 dollars for any fees for Kickstarter, additional artists and other costs to make the cards look even cooler.
3,000 dollars for manufacturing costs.
Any addition monetary value from the kickstater will be used to make the game bigger and better.
Thank you for the help and happy hunting!
Risks and challenges
The production of this game will be kept simple. It's a card game and thus a lot of the rewards that will be available for our backers will be be game related in one way or another. By backing our Kickstarter, you may obtain a play-mat for GrimmWar, or have the opportunity to become a real life playing card for you to show your friends and family ("Hey! that's me!"). Since this will be our first Kickstarter, we know that we may not be able to anticipate everything but we want to be as ready as can be. We strongly believe that our overall goal of $10,000 will help us achieve everything we have set out to do.
Thank you for your trust.
