Hello! I'm Lizzy Plotkin. I am a fiddler, singer and songwriter living in the Gunnison Valley of Colorado. I grew up in Nashville, TN.
My father moved to Nashville in the late 1970s as a fiddle player, where he met my mother. Inspired by his music, I asked for violin lessons when I was 4-years-old and have been loving and learning music ever since.
After high school, I studied environmental science at the University of Michigan and spent my summers at the Rocky Mountain Biological Lab in Gothic, CO. While teaching ecology and exploring the high alpine environment, I began to write songs and fiddle tunes. After moving to Crested Butte, I met a community of artists with whom I shared the joys of playing and singing traditional American music.
In 2012, I met Jenny Hill and Katherine Taylor who were equally excited to form a harmony-driven folk and roots trio. We made our debut record as Free the Honey in 2013, playing festivals and touring around the country for four years. Our third record Fine Bloom (2015) reached the top of the Folk DJ Charts and we found ourselves on stages with some of our roots music heroes. The time I spent with Free the Honey deeply nourished my musical soul!
I play music for connection, both to Earth and Humanity.
The Project: We Will Sing
My debut solo record We Will Sing is a collection of 10 songs that I wrote in and around the wilderness where I live. Out in the woods, my mind is clear, I feel at peace and the Music is everywhere. The songs on We Will Sing are reflections on the landscape and my experiences in them.
I self-produced and recorded the tracks at Swingfingers Recording Studios in Ft. Collins, CO with some of my favorite roots musicians!
Each song comes from a specific place. Unlike most of the high alpine tunes on the record, The Hat Song (sneak peek below) comes from a big magnolia tree in Nashville, TN.
The Tasks Ahead
As an independent artist, the costs of making a record can feel prohibitive. I love what I do and I'm proud of where I've gotten so far. I want this record to be released in the best way possible and I need your help to complete the process.
I’m asking you to pledge to my campaign to be a part of my community and help get this album out into the world.
The campaign will cover the costs of my final steps, including:
- Album Design/Artwork
- Digital Distribution Platforms
- Merchandise/Rewards in collaboration with FeverishArt
- Packaging and Postage
- Grassroots Promotion
- Radio Campaign
- Kickstarter Fees
The goal is to have these albums and rewards on your doorsteps by early March before the record is launched everywhere! I’m determined to make this goal and I know I can do it with a bit of help from you.
Thank you to all the friends, loved-ones, musicians, and engineers who have already helped, I'm looking forward to growing my community and continuing to bring my place-based music into the world!
Risks and challenges
Getting all of this done in the next few months is going to be a lot of work! It's possible that I could run up against timeline speed bumps seeing as I am working with others to get the products ready, but I have made myself a schedule that has taken the production time into account and will work extra hard to stay on task!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
